I'd like to suggest that all spells with numeric versions (summon monster I-IX, as well as the new polymorph spells beast shape, elemental body, etc.) count as only one spell for purposes of learning them. If a wizard leans summon monster I, let him have all of the summon monster spells as he can cast them for free, without needing to pick them as one of his free 2 spells each level or scribing them in his spell book. If a sorceror picks beast shape I, let him get the rest of the beast shape spells as bonus spells known. I think this would go a long way to let a specific spell effect live longer without penalizing the character for wanting it throughout their career.
I don't think this suggestion should include spells that have a lesser or greater version - though wouldn't be opposed to that idea.
