"Art of the Duel"

New Rules Suggestions

Liberty's Edge

Please strongly consider adding the Indulgence piece "Art of the Duel" by Craig Shackleton and Nicolas Logue to the Pathfinder RPG.

I think we have needed for some time a way to make fighters who aren't wearing full plate but who are effectively protected.

I think a combo platter of special feats seen in this document are a great addition to the game, allowing for more swashbuckling without suffering too much for low ACs.

There are some campaigns where swashbuckling is appropriate and others where it is not. Could you give us an example where these feats (which I don't have access to, being near-bankrupt) would assist a game?

IMHO, these suppliments focus on swordplay and acrobatics. Their weakness toward similar dramatic components (spell duel, exorcism, the chase scene) for other classes makes them not worth getting.

Also, I'd be more open to this suggestion if I knew there were rules for damage to the furnishings, or creating temporary obstacles. (D'Avril swings not at his opponent, but at a passing wine cart, releasing barrels into the street; better on hillsides, longer lasting on flat roads.)

If there were benefits to moving during combat, rather than having to stay put for a full-round attack action, that alone might produce more 'swashbuckling'.

Liberty's Edge

I agree that swashbuckling itself is not necessarily appropriate to standard fantasy RPGs, but the thing I like is having (at least) two very different paths to creating an effective fighter.

One path is to get the best armour you can afford and the most damaging weapon you can wield and wade into the thick of it, shrugging off hits right and left.

Another path could be to have an lightly armoured absolute expert with a sword who dodges, parries and counter-attacks to stay safe.

Historically speaking, these two styles would be from different time periods, so it doesn't quite make sense for them to face each other in combat...

Scarab Sages

Another path is to get the best armour you can afford and the most damaging weapon you can wield, be an absolute expert with a sword who dodges, parries and counter-attacks to stay safe.

Actually, I am using the Art of the Duel PDF for a fighter character from Korvosa.

So how is that working, and what is your perspective on the issue. No fair hoarding knowledge. Speak! Trust me, you can't make a bigger fool of yourself on these forums than I have without working VERY hard at it.

Yea, it's definitely worth the $1.50 US to purchase. After reading it, I'd say it's worth 5x that amount.
