Actions redefined

Alpha Release 2 General Discussion

I was wondering if it would be a positive change if move-equivalent actions and standard/partial actions would simply become 'Half Actions', and you could take two Half Actions per round? This is how it works in WFRP 2nd Edition, and I think it works dramatically better (and is far simpler to learn and remember) than the action system in 3E. Any thoughts?

Spellcasters being able to cast twice around would throw balance out of whack.

I like it how it is.

And fighters getting two attacks at first level also throws things out of whack, and two sneak attacks (three counting a surprise round) borders on the abusive.

I like the combat action and standard action combo, specifically because it rules out this manner of cheese.

But hey, if you do that, remember the monsters get it, too. [JOKE] Trolls on crack, yeah! [/JOKE]

It's one of those changes easier said than done. Honestly, you might consider trying ONE action per round. I tried it, but when my players threatened to leave their forks in blood from my liver, I relented. Hint: If you can't take this sort of thing in stride, don't play with soldiers deployed overseas.

But back to the point: do what you want, but be aware that this sort of change will have repurcussions you don't seem to have considered.

Oh no, I wasn't going to give two attacks or spells per round -- you don't get those in WFRP, either, unless you have two attacks (only more experienced characters do) *and* go for Full Attack ('Swift Attack' Full Action). Hmmm... yet you need to reserve one Half Action to parry or dodge in WFRP, so it may be that this system won't tranlaste to D&D/PF very well. I guess you guys are right...
