Does anyone have (or has anyone played) the old Avalon Hill game Lords of Creation by the late, great Tom Moldvay?

I don't know what got me thinking about it recently, but I remember how interesting and fun I thought it was back in the day. And I find myself wishing I had access to the box set sitting in my parents' attic back in the States?

So anybody else have experience with this old classic?

It's been a LONG time...

I remember our college group got really into it for a few months - it had some great ideas (many re-cycled and turned sideways later in TORG AFAICT), but mediocre formatting, mediocre writing...

Two of the three modules were great, at least to read (our group "burned out" on the game just as I was preparing to run the first one... Horn of Roland, IIRC) - Omegakron seemed really lame, but the Yeti Sanction looked like a lot of fun.

I remember it too.. Bitter sweetly. I was a high schooler when it came out, and lacked the experience and confidence to be a good GM.. but how I wanted to love this one! I loved the idea.. But I found the reality lacking.

I also recall the art was pretty good teen fan service. Bosomy goddess and monsters abound...

Ooo, I remember. We called it Lords of Cremation. It was tons of fun, from the group trying to stop the slaves from running off with all the guns in the first module to the point where two of the players stated they were upgrading to the computer jacking ability by drilling holes in each other's heads.

I still chuckle remembering the good times.

It was one of the most extreme ranges of PC power I can remember. (You start out as a normal human who can see ghosts. 20 levels later, you're a god!)

I never actually rolled up a character to play. But a friend of mine combined Lords of Creation (great backstory, lousy rules) with Pacesetter's Sandman (incoherent backstory, great rules system) and ran a happy little campaign for a while.

Geez I feel old.

Apologies for changing the subject, but I didn't know that Tom Moldvay had passed away last year! With all due respect to Mr. Gygax, he was one of those unsung guys at TSR who I think gave D&D some legs beyond the initial game format. That's a bummer to find out he's gone.

Beside Isle of Dread, Castle Amber is one of those bizarre modules I enjoyed when I started playing D&D. Also, I think he was involved in the Slavers series (another favorite). Also, Star Frontiers was probably the first RPG game I tried that had a sci-fi theme.

Sorry to threadjack, Lords of Creation was unfortunately the one I was least familiar with.

Yeah, we played through Horn of Roland.

The main things I remember are the absolutely ludicrous skill system and a certain roll-well-or-be-permanently-screwed part of the adventure (my thief character came away with his dominant hand amputated).

When I read the thread title I thought you meant this board game. Are the two related in any way?

I don't believe so.
