Here is the OOC (out of character) thread for our PBP. Please post here if you expect to miss to miss posting for more than a day, or if you have any questions. If non players would like to comment on the way the alpha rules are, or the way the game is playing, please do it here and not on the game thread! Thanks!

Hi everyone heres to having a great opportunity to test the new rules :)
Thanks for running this Cap. I am really looking forward to it. Is it ok if we post our backgrounds here for everyone to read Cap.? If so I will toss mine up here. Hope to get going soon I am not very experienced at pbp

as long as everyone thinks they can keep OOC knowledge and PC knowledge separate I don't mind backgrounds on here. I am a fairly player friendly DM - meaning I'm easy going as far as letting you do what you want, as long as your character has a reason has a reason for it. That being said, I'm not much for DM fiat saving the PCs rear, I haven't been known to throw too many posts to the obituaries threads, but if I let the dice fall as they may.

Ok well any players or Lurkers who want a bit of insight to Malin "Rags" Vosja here is his background.

Spoiler:
Looks: Rags is short and underweight for a human as a result of years of malnourishment at the hands of Lamm. He is 4Ft. 6in. Tall and weighs 84Lbs.This makes Rags look closer to 12 or 13 then 17. His hair is dark brown and goes down to his mid back pulled back in a ponytail under a head scarf most of the time. He often looks grimy like other shingle folk but this is carefully applied grim. A stinky rogue is a caught rogue.
Background: Rags doesn’t remember much about his father Tobar. He died when he was only three, that’s what his mother always told him anyways. He was actually sent to prison for robbing a wealthy merchant in the Heights. After his father died his mother went to work at a dockside tavern as a barmaid and cooks helper. Drina always tried to teach Malin what was right and wrong according to their people’s beliefs. Rags has fond memories of his mother. When he was six his mother ended up in between two patrons who had too much to drink and caught a dagger in the stomach intended for the other drunk. She did not make it through the hour. Rags has tried to blot out the memory of his mother on the floor of the taproom her lifeblood spilling out on the floor, but still from time to time the scene comes to him in a dream. Sigmund the Tavern keeper let Malin stay on at the tavern cleaning and fetching. He treated him well, and Rags had come to think everything was going to workout. This is also when he got his nickname for two reasons one Sigmund was not going to spend good coin on getting Malin any new clothes, and the ones he had were heavily mended. They had always been mended by his mother when a new tare or rip appeared. Second rags was what Sigmund would holler out anytime a spill occurred. Soon he just began hollering it anytime he wanted Malin’s presence. Unknown to Rags Sigmund had a gambling problem and was in debt to Lamm. Six months had past since Rags mother’s death when Gaedren made Sigmund the offer of clearing his debt for the boy. It only took Sigmund a few drinks of his rotgut to agree. If Rags ever finds out Sigmund was in on his abduction he would seek vengeance with the same passion he has against Lamm. The next day when Sigmund sent him to the dock to get a basket of the days catch for that evening’s fish stew was the day Lamm struck. He was walking down the pier when there was a solid thunk on the back of his head and the world went dark. He awoke to Lamm’s gator straining at his chain a few feet out of reach. The next seven years were hell on earth as Lamm trained, punished, conditioned, and screwed with his head. Rags found himself often getting punished because he wouldn’t let Lamm break his spirit. He cannot count the times he spent days healing beatings that took him to the brink of deaths door. He made Lamm mad easily. It seemed he could raise Lamm’s ire with a look. He never understood why. Lamm knew Rags father. He had been a rival of Lamms till a tip to a guard that Lamm had on the payroll. He saw Tobar in this whelp and it pleasured him to have the boy to kick around. He should have known the boy would take to the art like a fish to water. This only angered Lamm more. The final beating came about three years ago. Lamm caught Rags giving extra food to some of the smallest Lamms. It was time to end this once and for all. Lamm though he had beaten Rags to death that night. He only lived because of all the beatings he had received up to that point had made the boy tougher then any child should have to be. He was left in an ally on a trash heap. That’s when Desna shined on Rags and had Berwyn walk by that morning in a rush to get to his masters shop. Berwyn, the Halfling slave of a crotchety old man named Mister Aldrum ran his masters bookshop down in old Korvosa for him. He initially took Rags for dead when he came upon him, but on closer inspection he saw the boy shallowly breathing. Dragging him the block and a half to the rear entrance to Dusty Tombs took the poor Halfling a good fifteen minutes. Getting Rags healthy took a couple of weeks of him going in and out of consciousness. Since then Rags has learned much from Berwyn. Only in the last year has he built a small place of his own on the roof of the Dusty Tomb making him an official resident of the shingles. He has kept working the Art and makes sure to pay his due to the local Cerulean Society district captain. He hungers for vengeance against Lamm. He is ready to begin to pursue it.

Cap'n wrote:
Anyone who wants to play, make a 1st level character and mail it to me by Monday (the day after easter) If I have more players than spots I will let people know by Wednesday the 26th.

Spoiler:
Background: Trevel grew up as one of eight brothers and 3 sisters, their parents ran a form and saw fit to provide their own workers. Raising them keeping them in line beat paying wages to someone else as Trevel grew and grew and grew he earned the name ox, his youngest sister gave him the name and it stuck, Trevel she said would plow for as long as or longer than the oxen would or longer until all the plowing was done.

He worked hard and tried to do right by his family but eventually the family farm was failing and the 13 mouths to feed became more cumbersome than helpful, not wanting to see his family go to shackles or waste, he took on duties as a town guard after all crime was a never ending source of employment for a guard in Korvosa. When things were tough for his family he took out even more mercenary work, he would make sure shipments got where they were going. He only took on clean work, Protection not Harm, Law not crime.

Field master Kroft encouraged such mercenaries to join their ranks so why not the other way around, make a mercenary of a guard. One notable experience was personal guard duty for one Garrick Tann ‘the most hated man in Korvosa, there had to be at least twelve guards for the man when he decided to do taxing rounds himself. The whole day he protected the man scuffled and fought for the man to protect him. And then at the end of the day he demanded that all twelve guards pay their taxes then. Ox was one of two guards that had to fight off the other ten from beating Tann themselves. Trevel still ended up paying the man most of his days work. It was the law after all he did however demand receipt so he wouldn't have to pay again at month's end.

His father warned him that it would be more trouble than he should take on and for the first three years he was wrong. Being a guard was hard to one as noble as Trevel, wanting to make ever crime just, with fellow guard that were bribed easy, but he was necessary he was one of the few that helped this place stay only sinking and not sunk. From time to time he would stay back from his fellow guards and make sure justice was served according to the law they were sworn to protect.

It recently backfired on him, he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, he had been framed for murder, luckily field master Kroft personally came to the courts and spoke up for Cornwall, one of her best she said, however this only bought him time and saved him from the swift justice of Korvosa, he still spent harsh time in the dungeons before he was cleared, it wasn’t easy being a man of law on the inside, those three weeks were the worst in his life. even though Kroft spoke for him, his named was still dirtied by one Gaedren Lamm. And while he had crossed one of their own he was still too small of a fish in in a lake for the guard to be bothered….

Trevel could no longer work for the guard, working for the guard meant steady money, his family needed it.He was an inactive Member of the guard until his name was restored, more than anything he thought Kroft was forcing his hand, little did she know she didn’t need to, Lamm crossed the wrong man. He had one goal in mind, and he would achieve it before all else, his family would be fine, he put away enough to keep them settled for a rough patch. Gaedren Lamm would find that travel would put the strength of an ox into hunting and putting Gaedren to a proper end.

for those of you who didn't make the initial cut, I am keeping your sheets and emails, there is one more spot that I haven't received a sheet from my home group, if I don't get it by Wed I Will be contacting one of you.

Congrats to everyone who made the cut! I can't wait to meet everyone in and out of game. here is to telling a great tale and play testing the new rules! See you all in Korvosa ;)

Silver Crusade

I'm excited to have made the cut, and I look forward to playing with you.

I have a couple questions for the Cap about his interpretation of the new wizard rules.

1) My wizard Arius picked the bonded object option. The rules indicate that a bonded object "can be used once per day to cast any one spell that the wizard knows, just as if the wizard had cast it." (p. 16) Is this ability like casting with a pearl of power (cast one spell that you have prepared) or like casting an "anyspell" (cast one spell that you know from your spellbook)?

Full disclosure: I'm hoping for the latter interpretation because it sounds a lot more fun for wizards.

2) Does the Hand of the Apprentice (HotA) produce a visible, "ghostly" hand, or does it produce an invisible force like 3.5 Mage Hand?

3) What speed can HotA move objects? I'm guessing 30' per round because you can attack people 30' away in the same round, but I want to verify this.

4) Does HotA allow you to attack at full bonus with weapons in which you lack proficiency? This seems like it could be an area of abuse: "My 20 Int wizard is the best fighter in the party."

1. I believe that its the 2nd.

2. I'll let you decide - but it has tobe decided now and stay that way :)
3. I agree
4.since it uses your BAB I'm guessing it's limited the same way the wizard himself is.

"Anyspell 1/d" = rich, creamery butter. This gives me a big incentive to add spells to my book.

I think that your interpretations are reasonable, especially 4. It's a pretty powerful ability even with that limitation.

For 2., I'll pick the invisible force rather than the visible ghostly hand.

Liberty's Edge

Female Elf Druid

Looks like we're ready to go! I'm really looking foward to it! For anyone who's interested I posted my character bio below.

Spoiler:

Character Background-Anju-Elf Druid

Youth- Anju was born in Mierani Forest in a Druidic tribe on the outskirts of Korvosa. When she came of age, she was put to the tests on the first solstice, as was the custom. Disaster ensued and the druids-in-training were attacked by a starving bear who followed the scent of food to their camp. Anju survived, along with only one other. Her training commenced not long after, and she made friends with the other surviving druid, Kasa who became her closest childhood friend.

Adolescence- Anju's early years were fairly easy. Along with her duties to the tribe, Anju continued to train as a druid. One day Kasa came back to the village with an eagle that he found who was badly injured. Anju and Kasa worked together and nursed it back to health. Once it had fully recovered, Kasa named the eagle Arden and made it his animal companion. Weeks passed by which soon turned into months and Anju had yet to find an animal companion. Kasa tried his best to console Anju and reassured her that she had to let nature run its course and that when the time was right she would find her animal companion...or perhaps it would find her. Anju would dream occasionally of a lone wolf leaving the forest, seemingly beckoning her to follow.

Notable Events- Despite being a little naïve and inexperienced with the ways of the world outside the forest, Anju felt that she could better serve nature by traveling the world, learning about all that nature held, and educating others about why nature must be protected. This yearning was only strengthened with Kasa's mysterious disappearance from the forest. Kasa had shared the same dreams as Anju about traveling the world but Anju never thought he would leave without even saying goodbye! Anju decided to stay in the village and wait for Kasa's return...

Recent- More months passed and there was no sign of Kasa. However, a mysterious old man in tattered clothes showed up at the village one day and he was welcomed by the village elder Calfuray and taken into his quarters. That night the druids sat around the fire with the old man who told everyone that the small sect of druids in Korvosa had reached a new level of enlightenment by drinking an elixir made from nature herself. He produced a bunch of small glass vials from his tattered robes which contained a liquid that almost seemed to glow in the light of the fire. He said “by imbibing these elixirs you will experience vivid dreams during sleep in which nature herself will fill your body with strength and knowledge unlike any that you have ever experienced.” The druids were questionable but they accepted the gifts nonetheless. The next morning the old man left and Anju went about her daily chores as usual. While she was preparing breakfast for the village when she noticed that Calfuray had yet to emerge from his hut. This was strange because he was usually an early riser who often would greet the sun as it rose in the eastern sky. In fact, many of the villagers seemed to still be fast asleep. Anju entered Calfuray's hut and what she saw made her drop the bowl she was holding. He was laid out on the floor convulsing rather violently yet he appeared to still be fast asleep. Despite her efforts, Anju could not rouse him. She heard screaming outside as other villagers were discovered to be suffering from the same symptoms as Calfuray. Beside all of the victims were the empty vials of liquid that the old man had passed around that night. Anju was sure that that old man had something to do with this! Anju vowed to inflict natures wrath on the old man and find a cure for Calfuray and the others. Anju's mother made her promise to return at least once per year, for the summer solstice, so that she could give her blessing to the younglings about to undergo the tests, and receive the forest’s blessing. Anju agreed and with that took whatever rations and traveling supplies she could find to aid her in her journey and set out to leave the forest.

Dreams and Aspirations- Anju had been raised in the firm belief that the druids were the guardians of nature, defenders of her lore, judges of those who broke her law, and final bastion of defense against those beings who might try to harm her. Anju believed that, as keepers of nature’s lore, druids were to try to help others understand why nature must be protected. Anju wishes to see as much of nature as she can, and educate others about nature as best she can, before she dies. She also constantly seeks to bring justice to those she deems to be harming nature, either through their actions, or by their very existence. This goes twofold for any undead and the old man who poisoned her village. She also has hopes of finding Kasa, her childhood friend, in her journeys.

Fears and nightmares- Anju fears the loss of her friends and family that will occur if she does not find a cure for the drug the old man brought. She will always return for the solstice, and tries to return to check up on her home when she is near Mierani Forest.

Personality- Anju is a very kind and caring soul, especially towards animals. She always carries a pouch on her belt filled with scraps of meat, crumbs, and bones, as well as other treats for her animal friends. Anju makes her best efforts to solve disputes between animals and other beings to avoid fighting if possible. Anju hunts things that harm nature such as undead, or aberrations, seeking their destruction. She also considers herself an arbiter of nature's law, and believes she has the authority to pass judgment on those who break that law. She is a bit naïve and inexperienced and does not know the ways of city folk very well at all. However, she does have a good sense of danger or bad intent and can pick up on foul play much of the time.

Appearance – Anju is very young for an elf being a mere fifty years old. She has the appearance of a woman in her early twenties however. She has long reddish-brown hair that she oftentimes adorns with vines or branches and stunning green eyes. Anju has the typical elven body, slender with delicate-looking features, and stands about five feet tall.

yeah- for rolls just use one of the two dice rolling sites irony or invisible castle and email it to me. if you are actively doing something, that requires a roll, feel free to send it. put the reason for the roll in the notes from the roller email and/or the post in the ooc brackets {ooc}word{/ooc} replaceing curly brackets { for square brackets [

M Human Cavalier /1st

Just for future reference, and I only think this would come up in the family setting where I would be comfortable talking for the npc's. Can I show or rp reactions of my family for detail? they are the only ones I would feel like I could actually write what they might say.

For instance in my first post I might have had ox's brother's offer to come with him and then have ox reply that they would stay home on their own or he would see to it they stayed home. or have his youngest sister run to him and hug him tell him not to go.

while I am at though, would I be allowed to notice people as background for instance children playing Korvosa games on the road, or a begger to the other side of the road pickpocketing coins as he begs.

I ask because I didn't want to assume that it was ok. as far as on the street I would only observe them , but in the house I would interact. I understand if it is no, for I might put someone on the street when you intend it to be empty. just curious what the guidelines were for us using npcs?

Same here. But 4 people is a good number for a RL group, maybe 4 players and the DM is better. When there get to be too many people things start to go crazy and it's hard for the DM to pay attention to everybody. One thing I'm really looking foward to in this "play by post" is that no matter how many people we have in this group we all have an equal say in what happens.

I will email you a scan of the forge card tonight - it will most likly be later (Thursdays I go fencing after work so I don't get home til 10:30 or so)

as for noticing background things - in RP situations that you are interacting with NPCs that aren't a big consequence to the story you can do their reaction and what's happening around you and such, but places like shops and taverns and such where I might need certain reactions from the NPCs I'll do it. I may add things to what you see after for ones that you post. Basically - if I introduce the NPC or its a shopkeeper I want to say what it does, otherwise have fun.

Also as far as the knowledge and such checks go - you can either mention it in the post if you are actively doing it (as Arius did )or you can use the dice roller and send me the results. my comment about doing perception and knowledge was for background things where it might be "a DC 20 spot notices..." instead of saying roll a spot check an then waiting for a result and having everyone know that theres something to look at, I'll just roll it while making the post. If it's something you are initiating you can roll if you would like. An example, is that everyone ha 1-2 perception checks and almost everyone had 2 knowledge checks in that first post

another note - you may see a sprinkling of RPG supertar stuff here and there if I find an appropriate place for it, As bonus easter eggs. Since the party is so big I can throw some strange stuff at you guys at times.

Silver Crusade

yes, i have it at just about sunset the first day your appointment was actually for sunset tomorrow - I also won't be able to answer your spot until tomorrow, as you are a little ahead of some of the other players time of day-wise I think..I tried to give people a little time before the meeting to get to know the city if they wanted.

You can apply the changes to rules or not as you want - just let me know because I have a RPG Xplorer sheet made up for everyone, and a printed version, for reference on who has what skills and equipment and such..

OX and Anju are about 2 hours behind everyone else - I assume the time it takes Ox to get back from the farm will make him in sync with everyone.

Silver Crusade

I recommend that Ox check out the new rules release: They've buffed up the fighter a bit.

I'm okay waiting to implement changes at some natural break point (e.g., a level increase) or whenever we think that an ability is broken.

M Human Cavalier /1st

will do! erhmm, not that I think the fighter particularly needed any buffing , but who am I to argue with progress.

------------------
a little bit later, ypu looks good though for the class it will really take effect as I gain levels. and they may change it up again by then so we will take it as it goes, i am going to seize the free weapon proficiency given to humans though.

A couple of questions for the Cap.

Given your knowledge of the overall story arc (so far I'm unspoilered), do you think it's worth taking any item creation feats? I'm a big fan of Craft Wondrous Item, but I don't want to get it if I'll never have time to use it.

Also, are there any parts of Pathfinder #7 that are safe to read? I have it, but haven't read it because I want to avoid foreknowledge about the adventure's plotline.

To be truthful I've only read the adventure and harrow sections of the book (Plus the monsters who show up in the adventure) So I'm not sure - I would say that the article on humans should be ok from when i thumbed through it. I think only the two articles I mentioned above would rally have any spoilers, and anyone growing up in the city knows 50% of the Harow article(the other 50% is doing harrow readings with a deck of playing cards). From what I Know of whats going to happen, most of it is in Korvosa, so you're a little limited as far as 'magic shop syndrome' goes, I prefer using what you find and what you make/commission, the adventures will normally give plenty of time to expand upon downtime though, even mid adventure, so you will have time to use it if you take it.

Spoiler:
be warned though, I have been known to have bandits hired by the Big Bad Evil Guy (BBEG) come and steal the materials for the item 1/2 way through the process before

Okay, thanks. I won't have to worry about it till at least third level, so I'll see how Arius develops.

Just wondering Cap if I was able to find a nearby residence to stack out Zellera house from?

I have a few ooc questions. Am I looking at some kind of ledger? Are there any indicators where this book came from? Are these dates and times recent or do they come from a time period in the past? could you let me know when the earliest date is and when the most recent date is? thanks in advance for the clarification Cap.

yup - thats exactly what it is - a ledger of names, crimes, and dates. The dates begin about 40 years ago. The page before the ripped out pages lists dates from 19-20 years ago and the next full page has dates from 10 years ago. You also notice that there seems to be months and even years not represented, and then 4 or 5 in quick succession. The ledger's last entry is 5 years ago

For those of you who have guide to Korvosa, on the poster map M12 is 3 Lancet street and the Bailer's Retreat, the bar The Pelgane Brothers and OX all find themselves. The building next to the Retreat is empty for any who want to stake out the fortune-teller's.

I'm writing a decent size post now, give m 45 minutes. forg card is also being scanned right now

Question for you all - how graphic do you want me to be when describing rooms? how about when describing results of actions? I figured I would ask before we got into the first time we got into action.

also: is anyone doing anything meaningful the second day or would you like me to skip right to the meeting after the knivesies fight?

I like a fair level of detail, especially for surroundings/NPCs as it's easier to plan my response. However, I know that it takes more time to write; I'll go with the consensus.

Skipping to the meeting is probably okay with me.

I am fine with however graphic you want to be. You are doing a good job and I trust you to decide what needs detail and what can be broad strokes. We can always ask questions here if there is some info we feel is missed. I am fine with forwarding to the meeting. I was just going to grab some food for me and Berwyn and show him the ledger and see what he made of it. I would like to head to the meeting a couple hours early and find a good spot to hide/watch who else shows up.

For this I was thinking more gore-wise In this adventure there isn't much by way of gory parts, but by the time the path is done there might be, I'm not sure. So if anyone preferred a more PG-13 horror movie to an R horror movie (in relation to graphic violence and gore), I would try to remember that and adjust my posts accordingly. I do plan on giving you as much description as I can for your surroundings. Because the more you can build off my posts, the more I can build off of yours.

Basically I was asking if anyone would prefer 'the room is a bloody mess with body parts everywhere, in the center is a ogre standing at a table preparing meat. A large oven stands closed at the back of the room, you can see the fire gleam through the oven door. He looks up as you enter and goes "MMMM fresh meat" ' to the more detailed

Spoiler:
"The floor is covered in so much blood that the Rocks and floor all around are stained red. The stalagmites have impaled bodies of villagers stuck on them. There are severed hands in a pile on one side of the table in the center of the room and intestines on the other side. The fat looking ogre standing at the table is using a meat cleaver to cut off fingers and stuff them into the intestines before sticking them on baking sheets. A large oven stands closed at the back of the room, you can see the fire gleam through the oven door. The Ogre looks up as you enter and goes "MMMM fresh meat"

Or I can do both and spoiler the more graphic one - as i did above... all up to you all

No extra points for me, and both look fine,I wouldn't oppose either, so it looks like three for leaving it up to you thus far.

I am all for getting to the plot. After the fight, my actions will depend on if I am cut wide open or not. If not I will be drinking with my back to the bar. If so I most likely will be begging a heal, from any healers with a mind to do so.

I went ahead and sent you an initiative roll and the first ten attack rolls and damage for the knivsies fight, I figure that way it will save us some unnecessary emails. on the rolls I went ahead and put add +3init, add +5 atk and add +4 dmg. Is that how you want it done or would you prefer the simple rolls, and then to do the math on your own?

in the fight I intend on holding my dagger only, I will be attacking with kicks and knees(depending on how far away I can keep him.) so I used an unarmed 1d3, Ox is not trying to cut the kid and won't unless he thinks he is going to die. after all he has a lamm to hunt.

Diablo I?

I'd vote for PG-13: I'm more a fan of M.R. James style of horror than the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That is, I prefer horrific allusion to horrific photorealism. However, I can handle R if your example were representative, and I'd probably be fine with R whenever it were necessary for the plot (e.g., some of the violent scenes in Akira).

Just no gratuitous description of rape scenes (cue Eric's flashback to a stomach-turning Call of Cthulhu game at a convention)....

One thing that Arius will do tomorrow if we skip ahead: If possible, he wants to talk to a knowledgeable Varisian about the meaning of the Harrow Deck cards. Assuming that he can find anyone, we don't have to play through it via PbP. Just tell me if he remembers anything as it becomes relevant during the later meeting.
