This is the out of character discussion thread for 'Keep in the Cinderlands'.

Hi all!

This is going to be fun.

I've told you house rule #1. 'House Rule #1' is don't share personal information such as school, real name, email address, phone numbers, parents' credit card numbers etc. :-).

House Rule #2 is have fun.

House Rule #3 is no cheating on the dice rolls. You can roll your own dice at home instead of using 'invisible castle' but just be honest about it.

House Rule #4. To make it easy to be honest about the dice rolls, I'm going to give everyone some 'action points'. When you make a really bad roll at an important moment, you can 'spend one action point' to take a re-roll. Just tell me that you have spent your action point. Fair enough? To start off with, each of you will get 4 action points. When you gain a level, I'll give you some more.

Female Kobold

(Tarren Dei, I think that Action Point system is a great idea. Just my two copper pieces)

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

Don't worry guys, he's a friendly kobold.

The Exchange

Male Simian druid 12, poo-slinger 3, gator fan 3

Tarren, I'm afraid my daughter is still not quite ready for PbP. This is a great idea though, and I hope this thing takes flight. I'm sure she'll follow along and read for awhile. Perhaps sometime in the future she'll be ready to actually jump into this or another game.

Thanks, and good gaming.

Human

Lion is eager and good to go. He'll be around later and I'll point him to the carefully bookmarked pages.

Edit: Agreed with AP being a fine plan.

Male Human Fighter (2)

Good Luck everyone!

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

I'll be helping Uemala anyway so I'll act as Dm liason for his rolls. Kudos on the action pt idea!

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

Tarren, do you want to put out a second call for young players to replace Luke's daughter? We haven't got Uemala's skills up yet but they're on paper so any time you want to commence. (I may input them at work myself because my son is having NCLB inflicted Mastery tests this week, and the studying is taking up alot of time.

I noticed alot of increased traffic on the site now that they've released the RPG, so it might be a good time to troll for a couple more players.

Human

Just to mention we've been having horrendous problems with the site lagging, crashing and such the last couple of days. Much to do with rpg launch no doubt.

The caravan will be at the keep soon. I'm hoping that the characters will get to know each other. Check in at the game thread. It would be a good time for the characters to ask specific questions to get information about the keep.

Yes, thinks are very exciting around here, eh?

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

too bad they weren't about a week earlier and we could have tried that streamlined skillset out! (I'm old school-the bewildering array of skills always stuck in my craw)

I apologize, for not seeing the game thread...I thought the PBP for...thread was the game thread. My son was bummed when he found out it started without him...good stuff though. We'll be posting tonight..I'm sure everyone's eager to go on! If you're only 3 + a cleric maybe my wife or I will join in with a PC. A mysterious (if bumbling) arcanist is always handy. Any idea on frequency of posts? I know the dudes will want to at any opportunity, but the we go by dM schedule (break em in right)

I was glad to see his post today. We don't have any way to message people on these boards or I would have buzzed you. At least the action didn't start without him.

Rev Rosey, you, and your wife would be welcome to join in. The caravan will probably arrive at the keep this weekend (our time) and the party may start meeting up with others there. New characters can appear at the keep at any point.

As for frequency of posts, unless we have weirdness with the boards again, I think I might move things along every 24 hours. Any slower and people will forget about it. Any faster and people will miss out.

For example, the players now have a chance to respond in some way to the dead horse they have found in their path. 24 hours from now Longfellow is going to order his driver to get moving. If people miss out, we will try to fit them back into the story (let them take missed rounds of combat, etc.).

Well, if they update monks in the version 2 of the alpha we could convert but I think we should wait. I'm excited about trying out the P-RPG.

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

Yeah, Uemala has all the rules he can handle now without changing em up at this point.
You'd think there would be a private messaging feature and a dicebot, round these parts but hey, they got their hands full at this point. I'm amardolem HERE too, it has private messages if you ever need too

If the parents want to prepare characters and get into the game, the keep is where these characters would be and they can join in anytime now.

Human

They're a very fighty bunch. I'll rustle up a cleric of some description. Shoanti perhaps, to keep an eye on the monk boys - offer them spiritual guidance and so on. Unless Falcon Warchild is going to fill that role?

Female Shoanti (skull clan) Cleric 20

Healing hands type getting ready to drop by. Got a few bits to sort, but assume this is tough healer woman. Heavy on the bandages, low on the weaponry. This lot don't need any more firepower.

These boys can use a lot of spiritual guidance. Two of that type won't hurt. :-)

Very true indeed. Yaja will be packing the low-level adventurer's best friend - the light x-bow. Her dex is high enough that it might be useful.

Tarren, I don't have PHB to hand right now, can you recommend some Varisian neutral deity with a healing domain? Want to get the spells sorted.

Irori is lawful neutral ... God of history, knowledge, self-perfection .. Domains: Healign, Knowledge, Law, Strength, Rune. Favoured Weapon: Unarmed strike.

After being adopted by Lord Kerrigan, Falcon Warchild was raised by priests of Irori who accompanied the soldiers and, while the chapel has space for all faiths, the Curate is a priest of Irori.

Female Shoanti (skull clan) Cleric 20

Thanks for that.

Going with Irori - makes lots of sense. Yaja is (probably) ready.

I finally got the rest of Uemala's stuff on his profile (he's a slow typer especially when copying confusing skillsets so I vounteered-I must say he's enjoying the game though! we discuss the stuff and I'm always asing him HOW, "you're eating? HOW? are you ravenous? quaffing? sloppy? slow? Trying to get him to be elaborative! This is REAL cool...

I love playing with my son. So many interesting literacy activities around this game. But shhh .. don't tell them it's educational.

Human

Son and I had odd scenario earlier today. In our tabletop games, he's just a killer - basically if it moves it is doomed. On here, it's a little different.

Tarren's put up the bandits and we've all rolled initiative which to me reads like an attack, so I'm all go with my crossbow. Lion on the other hand finds DM post about the bandit speaking and for the first time ever decides to ask questions first. I'm staying well back when he's posting, so that was interesting to me.

Pity it turned out to be ruse and Korney is now bleeding to death and we have four more bandits to deal with. Such is rpg.

Hehehe ... It's a dungeon crawl! What are they doing stopping to talk. Next thing they'll be falling for "Look behind you!"

There will be other roleplay opportunities however ... promise! :-)

Human

I nearly fell off my chair laughing at the slugabed heroes. Oh well, Korney will be good to go any time now. He's stable, I'll give some hit pointy goodness, and hope that Umeala, Lion and others can keep knives out of my back long enough.

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

I hear you about the educational thing...I let Uemala type his post without me there, then he calls me in. Today he was stuck so I gave him a sort of mAD-lib "you need another adverb!" what? "see he *tries*, HOW?" (I always say the opposite-like "he happily tries to strike") the other thing I've been doing is (he's a bit younger than Lion and Korney-8) writing down synonyms for words he's used. Todays sheet has counterstrike, swivel, riposte, strike, blows. As I said up there ^ this is really cool...wish my Dad was this cool!

Human

If that Boggart's got toothache he's out of luck. Yaja's a healer, not a dentist.

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

Nope. No toothache. The boggard's have had a deal running with the bandits. Free travel through the bog in exchange for rabbits.

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

I have been helping Uema a bit...like in the boggard thing...I give him a number of choices if he's stumped. It was kind of cool to see him choose to try and talk to the Boggard, the lack of Metagame in him...any seasoned D&D player would have said "I don't speak Boggard, so that's know use" just shows you how meta you've become, even if you try not to be. :)

Heheh ... yeah. It's fun to play with someone that hasn't been around as long.

One time Kornelius took one of his other characters into a goblin's cave. After fighting off the little freaks he found the treasure. Amongst the treasure was a vial that read, in goblin, "Not poison. Absolutely not poison. Honest." He drank it. hehehe

Kornelius is 8 btw.

Human

Lion is loving this as well. He adores strategy - the current plan he's come up with is entirely his own work. It's going to be very interesting to see how things work out when one of them comes up with a plan the others don't agree with.

And I have to say it's a challenge for me not to metagame or do anything much with Yaja. Most of my PCs are incredibly lippy. Amardolem's right though. It's easy to forget how much we automatically meta even when we're not to.

Good news. The bandits aren't metagaming either.

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

I did notice the "Freudian" (not as compared with the other game) slip of PERCEPTION roll..see! see! see how much easier it is!! it was like you never had spot, search, and, listen rolls. (yeah I know there's all kinds of skill stuff swirling on the boards-but I like the new ones!)

Human

Finally ran my Alpha test last weekend. Three level 1 Alpha PCs romped through Devil Box (slightly adjusted to include non-existent undead) in no time flat. They were seriously tough PCs. CR 7 encounter? - toast.

They also nearly broke my brain by rampaging merrily through to the final encounter without some of the necessary bits and pieces and forcing me to do a lot of on the spot re-writing. Yes! There is suddenly a wall. Yes! Now there is an ambush. Yes! Now you have an unexpected prisoner...

First time GMing in ages. Probably the last in a while as well after that.

Check out what these guys did to 9 goblins in two rounds. But I'm not sure if that is so much the alpha or just lucky rolls. I'm certainly going to have some fun with them soon. I've been trying to keep the same encounter levels but making them challenging by letting the bad guys really live in the terrain. These bad guys are on home ice and you better believe they know how to make it work for them.

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

Here's a good one...you may notice the post where my son says "Yaja half your post is missing" or some such. I thought perhaps he was confused because it's all ooc and no character dialog. But, not being board savy he mistook ;D (wink, smile) for semicolon capital d making him think it got cut off!

I wondered about that. I hope it's all clear to him now!

@ Tarren - yes I saw the goblin decimation. Impressive in the way GM's tend to hate. You try and set up a balanced encounter and then, if you're me, you toll total rubbish for all the baddies. My PCs rolled OK for combat, but just demolished them. They did get extremely lucky with the face skills though and that was what caused my game breakage.

"Pay no attention to the man behind the (DM) screen..." (Kornelius is probably too young to get that one)

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

Okay guys. You all have enough experience points to move to 2nd level. If you would like to continue playing, there are more place around Kerrigan's Keep to explore. You will also get 500gp each as a reward and you can use that to go shopping. If you don't want to continue playing, I understand. Play-by-post games are quite slow. Let me know what you each want to do before we continue.
