HMM: Carpet Bombing the Kreegs (spoilers)

Rise of the Runelords

Last session my players finally made it to Fort Rannick. Seeing it overwhelmed with ogres, they started firing off Fireballs into the fort. After a few rounds of mayhem I had Dorella Kreeg fly out of the fort via potion and, finding the PCs, started hitting them hard with Lightning Bolts. They've hit her hard with ranged attacks and she's about to retreat but a lot of Kreegs are on the way. Any advice on what next? I'm hoping that the poor bastards will retreat soon otherwise things could go south for them. Did anyone else's players pull this stunt?

A lot of the foes are inside the buildings or underground. I'd think they'd run out of fireballs before they ran out of bad guys. Sooner or later they're going to have to go hand to hand with some ogres. If they stick around outside the fort, it will be sooner, for sure.

Yeah, they didn't do a lot of damage. They injured some ogres and killed five but mostly they just made them mad and put them on alert. This is going to be a hard fight for them.

Yeah, players can drive you nuts. I had one who between bieng a half orc and midnights giant heroic path is effectively a half ogre get enlarged and airwalked. He was suppose to be a distraction for the Ogres and the party sneak by. Instead he charges the biggest group and gets surrounded by all the Ogres in the courtyard. Ouch.

On the bright side the rest of the party got in the Fort.

My players did the ultimate no-no: they split up to attack (which actually worked out quite well, and left us all wondering "why don't we split the party more often?").

Our wizard and druid flew over the courtyard on summoned giant eagles, the wizard destroyed the New Barracks with a channeled pyroburst then they landed on the rooftop of the keep.

Our scout (leading the remains of the Black Arrows) used bitterbark smoke to drive the shocker lizards through into the cells, and ran into Lucrecia (that one was a tough solo fight).

After the scout clearing out the basement (and running into Kaven, briefly), the druid and wizard destroyed everything on the top floor (Jaagrath only lasted two rounds, and didn't even hit anyone; Dorella and Hookmaw didn't even survive to their initiative rolls, I was so disappointed), then they went downstairs/upstairs, met up in the corridor, and wiped the floor with the other ogres.

I had Jolly, Mink-Tuck, Karly-Lop and seven other ogres show up for a big fight, and that only took about four rounds (baleful transposition and greater fireburst... ouch).

Mine came in through the basement, killing Lucrezia, and then split up as well. They wiped out the inside groups very fast, though they lost one NPC ally to a 4x crit from one of the barbarians. They then took up a position with half the party on the roof firing spells and arrows, and half the party in the main keep doors. The ogres outside were in a tough position; they launched ogre-wave attacks on the doors but couldn't get through.

It didn't seem particularly hard, just dicy because of the high damage. The PCs could probably have done better with a little more patience; they didn't treat the Doreena/bodyguards group with the respect it deserved, and that's where they lost someone.
