I need to add Mike Nelson's RiffTrax as well. It's an MP3 "commentary" that you play in-sync with your DVD.

It's got Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo), who is my favorite of the MST3K bunch anyways.

Crap meet pants.

I just watched a bunch of MST3K with an old friend of mine and was wondering what those guys were up to. I've got to get my hands on this.

I prefer Joel over Mike, mike was good, but he always seemed to try to hard. Mike was great as an extra though.

I loved Trace as Crow (and to a lesser extent as Dr. Forrester) and Frank as TV's Frank. Trace and Frank were the best mads.

The only thing that I don't like about this new format is Kevin (aka Tom Servo) isn't in the line up. He always had the best lines.

I agree, Joel was better. But Mike was the head writer, so all those zips and zings Joel threw were mostly his anyway. Funny how together they were awesome, but separately "meh".

Mike was awesome in bit parts. His Torgo bits were spot on and his songs were usually great. I think the Joel hosted Forrester/Frank years were the best years of MST3K. Mike was an important part of that series though, and he did a super job when Joel left, but I don't like the looks of his new format as much as CT. Part of the fun with MST3K was the feeling that you were watching the movie with the host and those crazy robots, I think without their presence on the bottom of the screen will be missed.

Did someone say MST3k? One of my favorite shows of all time!

I'm glad to see the all the folks from MST3k have returned in one form or another to doing this.

I'd say that Joel's tenure is still my favorite, along with Trace and Kevin as the bots. I think Joel's talent for quirky lines; off-beat inventions, and the way he was always in that befuddled tone made him so cool and hilarious. I tend to think of this as MST "indie" period.

But I'd give Mike credit for making the show different without messing with the formula too much that made MST3k great. Maybe it was the licensing with Comedy Central, but I tend to think of this as their "commercial/mainstream" period - as much as a show like this can be.

Still, it seemed that where Joel was always tricking the "Mads", Mike seemed to take a lot more grief and humiliation - which wasn't as funny to me. Honestly, it was more of a bummer to me when Trace stopped being Crow's voice - It just didn't seem the same, although Bill Corbett tried.

Rifftrax's is an interesting idea - I tend to like the ones where Mike, Bill, and Kevin all chime in. I can picture the three of them in the corner mocking the movie so easily. It's the guest ones that I can't really grasp yet. The other plus is getting to see some recent movies get the treatment. Indiana Jones, for example, was a great one to see them do - I love the movie in any case, but to have Mike and the Bots do their thing was great!

Also, if you haven't seen them before, you might want to check out:
The Film Crew It's a similar premise to MST3k with Mike, Bill, and Kevin playing as some sort of film inspectors. The format is also the same, with breaks to let them do some sketch jokes.

Still, having Joel and the original crew return sounds pretty neat, so I'm going to have to check out CT and see.

I just watched the dvd! It was great! Each mocker got a chance to stop the film and do a 'solo'. (I guess Joel didnt use the parts to start and stop the film to make any robot friends!) Riffs-a-plenty and each person made me laugh. Some really funny stuff!

It is a little raw and rough, but they'll get in the swing of things. They seemed a little nervous (or maybe that was me). And 'Stephen Hawking' makes a cameo?

I started with either "Corpse Vanishes" or "Crawling Hand" from Season 1, so I have to say Im down with Joel. Loved his SNL appearances as well. I liked Mike, but adored Joel's sleepy but sly delivery.

His Torgo bits? Ewwwwwwwwwww! I don't want to think about his what Torgo might have been hiding in his goat pants. (and I agree with you about Joel/Dr.F/Frank, but I will eagerly watch them all again and again and again). My favorite show of all time.

In closing:
Nipples. Many sizes. Many shapes. And some on my back!

Scarab Sages

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but Mike, Crow and Servo once played D&D/LotR

I have to say, judging by the previews they put up, Cinematic Titanic seems to be funnier than Rifftrax. Whether that's due to the Shadowrama or having more good writers or the simple fact that they're riffing on bad B-movies, I may never know. Still, Cinematic Titanic seems to be a true successor to Mystery Science Theater 3000.
