So I was wondering, the wizardess on the cover of Dungeon 143.. does she have a name and does she actually have an appearance in the magazine or was it just awesome Wayne art that couldn't be passed up?

She doesn't have a name. She's one of the 11 iconic characters we came up with for Dungeon, and appears fairly often in Dungeon from issue #139 to #150 (mostly in the Savage Tide adventrus). As with our iconics for Pathfinder, we had Wayne design these 11 for Dungeon; all 11 of them appear on the cover of #150.

Ahh thanks for the reply. Like the covergirl from Dungeon 103 I'm going to borrow her for my own purposes. I can't begin to say how many of the last 50 dungeon and dragon covers were the inspirations for characters, both good and evil, npc or pc. :)

It's very attractive art--somehow a nice blend of (bluntly) the usual fantasy girl cheesecake and more up to date action and coolness. On the other hand I did kind of raise my eyebrows at the garter belt, fairy wings, cute quasit, disco boots and really complicated belt strapping arrangement.

You have to admit, you gotta be brave in that outfit, when you look at it that way. But if you wanted complicated, try Lulu from FF X.

I don't remember, did James or Eric ever mention getting the IDs and/or stats for those iconics beyond Tyralandi?

Sir Urza,

Please remember to accompany all references to fantasy goth hotties with a hypertext link for neanderthals like myself who struggle with this interwebthingy.

Many thanks,

Wayne likes his straps & leather. Very BDSM, if you ask me :P

Hi everyone. I'm new here, and the main reson I joined this community is Dungeon #143 covergirl. I'm in the process of making my first great campaign since Y2K, and I have all the issues of both Dungeon and Dragon. When I started to search for ideas, the wizardess from the cover of Dun#143 captured my undivided atention. Anyway, is there any possibility to have some official stats for the iconic characters featured in the Savage Tide. Even a hint would be helpful, please?

Hi there, and welcome to the boards!

The iconics we used in Dungeon, alas, don't have stats or backstories. We first started using them simply as reference for our artists, and to give Dungeon a bit of personality. People really got into the iconics, though, and all of the requests we got for their names and stats was really surprising... and cool! When we switched up to Pathfinder, we made sure that our new iconics had stats and names and backstories... but we never did do those for the Dungeon ones.

Although the iconic Dungeon cleric (featured on the cover of Dungeon #131) DID pretty much inspire me to model my character in Erik's Age of Worms campaign after her...

Thanks for your reply, James. It wasn't what I hoped for, but I expected something like that. I understand that you don't want to look back and in a way support a product that's not in your hands anymore - and it's okay. NPC building is my favourite part of being DM. But, if you and the others on this board don't mind, I would like to share Xell (I gave her a name allready, see?) with you all, and hear (read, that is) what you think. I'm new to the 3.5 Ed. although I have allmost all the products published by the WotC. I'll be using Paizo's Pathfinder RPG Alpha variant rules. Btw, somebody please tell me if something like that is inappropriate for this thread or this board.

Cool; post Xell up!

Well, this will take time, but some things are obvious from the start: She is some kind of a war mage, or a fighter/mage. She is not shy of melee combat. And, she has some cool stuff. I hade one of my players roll the dice, and this is how she looks, as shown on the cover of Sungeon #143: Xell
Female human fighter 3/wizard 11
CG Medium Humanoid
Abilities (not modified for level): Str 13 Dex 18 (+2 first level human) Con 15 Int 18 Wis 9 Cha 16
As I've said, she has some cool stuff, that she carries through the whole campaign: the sword-like thing on her right arm, faerie-wing cloak (it's a cloak, not wings. That can be seen in Dungeon #139 and #143, interior art) and her studded leather armor. So, the blade on her right arm is actualy war mage armblade, exotic weapon, that allows a mage to cast spell with somatic component and still be armed. It's equivalent of a short sword. The cloak is legacy item (to explain why she has it on a first level, and keeps it with her through the rest of the campaign). These are just first ideas. I will post her complete stats when I see PRPG Alpha 2. Anybody else has a vision of our covergirl? It would be interesting, I think, to see her in a different lights. Btw, for my campaign I need her to be CL 20, and that will be reflected in my final version. Another thing: I use a house rule for familiars. Western ocult tradition states that familiars are helpful spirits and that they esentialy give the mage a boost in power. In my campaign, an improved familiar grants it's master +1 caster level bonus, in addition to the rules stated in PHB. In ADnD, imps and mephits granted +4 bonus levels.

Hi, nightflier. Glad to have you here.

The SRD document includes rules for a "battle sorcerer" (link here). That's how I would have characatured Xill under the 3.5 rules. I'm hoping that the Pathfinder rules eventually allow for something similar.

Dark Archive

I've considered something like that, including the war mage from the Complete Arcane. Xell is allway depicted using battle spells or attacking with that blade on her right arm. The main reason I didn't go with the war mage is that I want to use 3.paizo rules and because of the fighter feats. Let's say Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus and Toughness to give here better chance to hit and more hit points, and later - when she becomes wizard, sorcerer or whatever - Battlecaster, so she can use her armor, combined with high dex, to give her nice AC. All of that combined makes her effective melee combatant and later with Improved Familiar feet (using my house rules) she gets aditonal fire-power. But, let's wait for Alpha 2. We'll see the new sorcerer rules, and I think that we'll be pleased.

Wow... this thread is still being kicked around. :)

I'd be very interested to see a 3P write up for her.

Sorry for not posting any sooner, but yesterday we had a gaming session and Easter is in Sunday, so I don't have a lot of time. I want to give a detail account of our sorceress, based on the last illustration of her, published in Dragon #359. I thin I'll manage to post that later today.

Argh! My laptop just died, and I scheduled a game for tomorrow. My adventure is all gone, and Xell the Sorceress as well! I'll have to wait till the end of hollydays to take it for repairs. It seams that you guys will have to wait a little bit longer for my version of Xell, but I'll welcome any and all ideas.

All hail the side boob shot!
