Liberty's Edge

my question is;
Is it possible to play D&D online?
are there sites, or could threads be used?

please put you insite i was wondering, my selection of players is limited and the dm's in my area are not very good, AND I NEED D&D = )

I have to admit I'm curious about this.

Do you mean, playing D&D on the boards? If so, that would be the Play-by-Posts.

Ah. Welcome aboard, then! If you want to play real D&D, then yes, the PbPs are the way to go.

pbps? srry im not entirely sure what that means or how to get to it?

You could also look into some of the software out there specifically for this. My group uses Fantasy Grounds and Skype to play, and it works exceptionally well. Check them both out on the web for more information.

Play-by-Posts. Look here to find a group, and here and here once you've found one.

I've been running an online campaign using Fantasy Grounds for over a year, and can recommend it.

Dark Archive Owner - Johnny Scott Comics and Games

I don't know if they exist anymore, but I used to play D&D online about 8 years ago in a chat room. There were formulas you would type in to roll dice and the results would display in the chat forum.

I don't remember where these chat rooms were, but the games were pretty fun (once you got used to the flow of the game).

The DM Tools chat room can do this. :)

If you're looking for an online game with an actual live DM and not some WoW knockoff try Mirc (IRC chat program). There's lots of games being played on the different servers. I've been playing on line on the Darkmyst server for a few years now. We play a few nights a week in differnt channels offered on that server (#Dungeon, #Traveller, #Shadowrun are a few). Here's Darkmyst's web site www.darkmyst.org , you can log in from there if you don't have the IRC chat program or go to www.mirc.com to get the actual program for free.

You can also check the IRC DnD board's calendar on Yahoo for currently running games... http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/irc_dnd/

Hope this helps.

i got a question on the play-by-post how do you roll?????

Grand Lodge

If you are going with play by post (pbp) the dm will set the standard for rolls in his or her games. Typically people use Invisible Castle which once you create an identity there will record your rolls and allow you to link them.

If you are looking for something more akin to tabletop play though, you might not be immediately satisfied with pbp as it moves much much slower. The pbp advantage is players not having to be online at the same time and time to think about what you want to write. Are you looking for realtime chat or voice with map displays and all that? There are programs designed to handle that kind of thing, and others the can be used for it. Creating a private chat room on Liliths above mentioned site might be a good way to go with minimal learning curve. You have dice right there. You'll have to find players and a dm who can all commit to the same time slot though and be consistent about it.

You can also join this site:

MapTool is free and IME the best online D&D experience available.

Wizards of the Coast is suppose to be rolling out some kind of digital interface that will completely eliminate the need for friends. Good times. Good times.
