To recap:

There are two “Classes” in Call of Cthuhlu d20. They are "Defensive" and "Offensive"

Defensive 1st level has 2 good saves (choose from Fort, Ref, Will; good saves are +2, the other is +0), +0 BAB, and +2 AC.
Offensive 1st level has 1 good save, +1 BAB, and 1 free weapon proficiency feat.

Each character picks a profession which allows for eight associated skills +3 skills of a characters choice.

If you pick a profession, I'll give you a list of skills associated with that profession. Typical Professions include Antiquarian, Archaelogist, Artist/Musician, Blue collar Worker, Criminal, Priest, Soldier, Technician, Businessman, Writer/Reporter.

If you want the writer/reporter profession – the associated class skills are:
craft (photography)
craft (writing)
Diplomacy
Gather Information
Innuendo
Knowledge (any one)
Knowledge (any one)
Research
Sense Motive
+3 of the players choice.

Characters start with 32 skill points (+int. bonus x4)

Abilities are either 4d6, drop the lowest, arrange as desired; or 28 point buy.

Each character will have $12,000 starting cash to buy this or that. (laptops, cameras and the like would be appropriate). Assume modern prices. This may take a little googling or “shopping” on Amazon or the like.

Players at this point are:
Shenzoe,
Bill Lumberg
And Aramil Xiloscient

In character you know that you have been hired by Hugh Rogers, owner, publisher and editor in chief of the Sunlight Scoop, a bi-weekly tabloid of a sensationalist nature. It regularly prints stories about alien abductions, elvis clones, and giraffe boy. You have either been hired as a writer or a photographer and your character should be of such a sort as would be willing to take such a job, unpublished writer, retired soldier, etc.

The game will be set in the modern era (today more or less - though not exactly in our real world of course).

I have a very rough idea for a character. Check my profile and let me know what you think. I am not married to it so fire away. Hopefully it is not too silly. Any suggestions are welcome.

I will work on skills and such when the discussion thread opens. Where can I look up equipment and such to purchase?

This is the discussion thread. :)

I have nothing against the character concept so far. I am interested in knowing whether or not he believes in the paranormal already or does he view the work as a scam?

As for equipment, use modern prices. The d20 modern site isn't much help with prices, so I am trusting you to know approximately what something costs. If you want to look for bargains on e-bay, amazon, whatever that's fine.

$12,000 should enable you to have a used car, a laptop, clothing, etc. but I will be suspect if you manage to acquire a house, a porsche, or an unlicensed nuclear accelerator.

Male Human Expert 3/Cleric 3

For Kenny Eastman's Profession/Class Skills, may I suggest:

Profession: White Collar Worker
Bluff
Computer Use
Diplomacy
Forgery
Knowledge (sports)
Knowledge (accounting)
Listen
Sense Motive
Spot
Craft (Writer)
+ 2 more of player’s choice

Kenny does not believe in spiritual entities or such but he thinks that there are UFOs. He thinks that Bigfoot sightings etc...are escaped biological experiments that were created by the military-industrial complex. He is the kind of guy who likes to blame mysterious forces for his lack of success in life.

In his mind people like Sylvia Browne are frauds but the guy who says he was abducted by aliens might be telling the truth. Of course, he also thinks anyone who uses the mainstream media to get such messages across is probably a government agent trying to draw attention away from the "genuine" folks.

Scarab Sages

A listing of skills courtesy of the d20 Modern SRD.

Remember that though you have 12 core skills, you likely can't max out on all of them without an 18 intelligence. Kenny for instance can max out on 10 skills.

You should get along fine with your publisher then. :)

Oops, just saw above that we start with 32 skill points.

Nevermind.

Scarab Sages

Male Human Expert 3/Cleric 3

You remembered the bonus skill points from Intelligence right?

And Kenny looks good so far. There are a few more details need filled in but I'll get to them in a bit.

Now we just need the other two. :)

Yep. Kenny had 40 points total to distribute.

I checked the D20 modern link you provided. Kenny seems to be closest to a smart hero so I chose two feats. What hit die should I use for HP?

HD is d6. And two feats is correct. (for all the characters)

Scarab Sages

Male Human Expert 3/Cleric 3

The only things Kenny needs to be a finished character are his sanity stats.

They are...
Starting Sanity: 55
Maximum Sanity: 99
Current Sanity: 55

Scarab Sages

Male Human Expert 3/Cleric 3

Shenzoe, if you are still interested, please post.

And Aramil, I'm looking forward to seeing your character.

As soon as the characters are done, I'm good to start. Chomping at the bit to start really :)

In fact, we can start the game even before the characters are 100% finished so long as we know who they are and why they are there.

The PC at work is fitful today so I might be unable to post later.

Other than that, I am ready for work.

Harvey Malgam is a poet. 43 years old and still no success stories. An alcoholic, a gambler, and a disaster with women, after two divorces all he cares about now is living on through his poetry and writing and making a few dollars on the side.

He has worked as a columnist for the Toronto Tribune, The Seattle Intelligencer, and various small town papers but has fallen on some hard luck recently. He doesn't care where the money comes from he just wants to make a buck.

He's seen some rough things in the heartland of America, some rough types and been through some scrapes, but as for the supernatural and paranormal, he doesn't give a flying f*ck. As long as it stays out of his life.

Think Charles Bukowski and you'll have Harvey Malgam.

Questions:

Hit Die?
Should I pick Feats?
And is there anything else you would like me to include?

Don't forget his bonus skill points for Intelligence is +3x4. I believe you should have an additional 9 skill points. Unless I'm just miscounting.

HD is 1d6. Two feats. There's a link for the d20 modern SRD somewhere above. Feats are the same.

The other thing to include is sanity.

Harvey's is as follows:
Starting sanity: 70
Maximum Sanity: 99
Current Sanity: 70

Other than that Harvey looks good to me.

male humanish Writer 5/Love Master 2

Harvey Malgam:

HP: 8
Sanity: 70
Feats: Brawl, Personal Firearms Proficiency

For the skill points I did take into account the x4 - I picked some cross class skills - Drive, Intimidate, Listen, and Gamble

Good news for you then. You get to make three of them into class skills (the +3 of players choice).

Great. One of my co-workers is a gun-toting drunk. I thought games were supposed to be different than the real world.

Now you make me wonder where you work. :)

Just for the record, in game, alcoholism is regarded as a mental disorder. Normally mental disorders are what your characters develop after being characters in the game. So I am interested in seeing how this all works out.

Male human Defensive 1

This ain't no mental disorder, brother. This is the real thing.

Since Aramis said he would have his character by tomorrow at the latest, I'll give him until then before I start the actual game thread.

Move along folks, nothing to see here.

Too bad one of use was not out there with a camera. Of course the feds and the military say it was nothing.

The Chronicles of the Sunlight Scoop is open.

We will start with the players we have and if the other two create characters they can enter in whenever they are ready.

Yep.

Incidentally just to reiterate from the invitation thread - exp. is not going to be dealt based on killing anything. You'll need to in character write stories and take pictures. Bonus experience will be given for really good in game picture taking/publishing.

That Rag!

They just make things up.

Not that you can't make up the odd story... I mean if it reads well thats one thing but at least I send out reporters. Paid Reporters even!

And we hardly ever use Photoshop.

I am really sorry about my long absence I took a trip where I thought that I would be able to post but then couldn't. Unfortunately I am probably not going to finish my character very soon. I can start later than everyone else too but I understand if you would prefer to go on without me.

At the speed PbP go, it should be good. You're invitation is still open. :)

They could use a photographer and if you want to know how to fly an airplane, the paper has one you can use to transport the characters at times.

OKay I will try to hurry and get my character done but there are some things going on that could make it a little bit difficult.

Pilot (small aircraft)

I was thinking a National Geographic type of photographer when comprising the skill list. A Photojournalist if you would.

Incidentally, even if you don't have your character completely done, if you can give me a name I can fit you into the story here very shortly.

Oops- Terran and I are in a race-
I just wrote a PURPOSEFULLY garbled I.C. posting on the other thread:
My concept, single mom, punk rock past, still young, wisecracking and smart, (a la Diablo Cody, who wrote Juno!), newly sober, very very very concerned about her ability to be a good mom, underneath all her hip posturing, (her daughter's pre-school aged.)
Don't know what her real name is yet, the character, but she goes by KoilGurl.
This job with Hugh is the one thing K.G. has been able to apply herself to (besides drinking- in the not so distant past) - she's taking the one 'real world' skill she has- photography- and tracking down weird things...

Anyway- that the thumbnail precis-

I haven't run the math yet - just passing through at the moment so to speak - but I am curious why you picked craft (writing) over craft (photography) when the character concept is as a photographer?

Just asking. :)

Another possibility- I use the skill points I put on Craft (Writing) into Knowledge (Chinese Medicine) or Craft (?) Yoga- whatever these pursuits would be called in d20 terms.

My rationale: as Katja struggled to get clean & sober, she has tried many approaches: in addition to 12 Step Programs, and her friendship with Dr. Morganstern, Katja has explored accupuncture and Chinese herbs - proven to be effective in reducing the cravings of addiction; as well as Yoga and meditation (ditto.)

(In RL I was once a health outreach worker, so I can talk *some* of the talk...)

So- if you think any of these are good for your purposes, I'm happy to have you choose...

Writing and Photography are definitally two seperate skills.

Knowledge (Natural Medicine) would be what I would call it and I doubt Yoga would be considered a craft. Maybe a knowledge. Or pick another skill and make them related (like escape artist or knowledge: religion).

I have to rush around a lot this morning and don't have time to write up the game thread post but I will start your character this evening when I get home and post for the other guys as well.
