Saw this on the Scifi Channel Website:
Max Von Sydow and Pete Postlethwaite are joining star James Purefoy in the cast of Solomon Kane, a film based on the pulp novels of Robert E. Howard, Variety reported.
Rachel Hurd-Wood, Alice Krige and Mackenzie Crook have also been cast, according to Paris-based producer-distributor Samuel Hadida, head of Davis Films, the trade paper reported.
Planned as the first in a trilogy, Solomon Kane is an epic tale of a 16th-century soldier tormented by his past evil deeds, seeking redemption by battling a sinister power threatening the kingdom.
The movie will be adapted from the books by Howard, author of Conan the Barbarian. The Kane books were first serialized in the 1920s and '30s.
Michael J. Bassett (Deathwatch) will direct from his own script for co-producers Hadida and Paul Berrow, head of Epic Tales. Shooting is due to begin in Prague this month.
Considering the disparity between Howard's writing and the Conan movies, I am worried. At least it has Max Von Sydow in it. He kicks ass.

Von Sydow's in it for about 7 minutes and Kane is some kind of reformed pirate. The plot is circular and doesn't exactly explain itself

I saw this two years ago with the director present for a Q&A. He wanted to do a Howard story (and the sequel if he had gotten to make one would have been one of the Africa stories), but the producers wouldn't go for anything less than an "origin" story. Given the choice of origin story or not at all, he went for origin story, just to be able to make the film.

Movie wasn't bad per say, but it was good in the same way the Star Trek remake was good, if it wasn't a Solomon Kane story I feel I would be able to have enjoyed it more, as it is, it's serviceable.
How did you like 'the hall of mirrors' at the beginning of the film and the BBEG?
A 100' long, 50' wide hall with a 50' high ceiling.
Description: This long Hall has 999 full height free standing mirrors in heavy frames. Each Mirror is a Permanent Gate to one of the lower planes.

Honestly? I thought the mirror room was awesome and will probably steal that for my campaign at some point.

Finally saw this the other night. It was about as REH as the recent Momoa Conan remake: OK star, but nothing special; lame plot with no similarity to any of the actual stories; and an awful lot of CGI, even when there's not much need for it. Oh, and the "climactic" ending scene is predictable and lame.
I hate to say it, but The Vikings was made in 1958 and is still about a hundred times better than any of these recent fantasy movies.

I liked it slightly better than the new Conan. At least I think so. I'll give it another month or three and see if I remember any specific scenes from the movie. I saw Conan when it hit Netflix, and I can't recall any specific lines or scenes at all...just a general blur of muscles, steel, and blood.

I rather liked Solomon Kane. I'd say it captures the feel of Howard's stories, but I don't think it's anything he would have written himself. For one, there wasn't nearly enough casual racism ^_^
Seriously though. It reminded me of The Hills of the Dead, the story where Solomon Kane goes to Africa and battles a sorcerer who creates an army of zombies. It's almost like they took that story, set it in England and then added a few liberties with bits of Kane's life Howard never wrote about.
As far as the new Conan thing goes, I thought Solomon Kane was 1000% better. I thought Jason Momoa was pretty dull as Conan and he doesn't have a fraction of the presence or charisma Schwarzenegger brought to the role. Also, he looks like a monkey.

I saw it on Netflix a few days ago. As someone who has read all the Kane stories I thought it was great. It might not have been adapted from any specific story but it captured the atmosphere and character of Solomon Kane wonderfully.
I agree. It "felt" like I was watching a movie about Solomon Kane...
