James and Jeremy beat it already and I just watched my roomate finish it (I'm no were close to being done). So Fricken' cool though! It's the closest I've ever come to feeling like I'm playing a movie. Totally love it and can't wait for the sequels! Oh, and the talking codex! Swoon.

I would play a pen-and-paper RPG based off this universe.

It is indeed awesome. Best Xbox game (360 or otherwise) yet!

Wonder if Bioware'd be interested in doing a Pathfinder game?

Stop putting fantasies in my head!!!

[added]I have played and beaten it, twice. Once as both a full Paragon and a full Renegade. You can check out my views of it over at my blog.

So jealous! I've played just about every Bioware RPG so far except for this one because I can't presently afford an Xbox 360 and I really should be working anyways.

James gazes skyward at the stars now obscured by the light of day.
Someday, stars. Someday.

Interesting note: Bioware has "open auditions" for their writing staff for thier currently in development MMO. Check it out, it's at the bottom.

Wouldn't we rather a Pathfinder game go to a company that makes games fun to play? ;)

Just finished playing Mass Effect. Excellent game.

Now that I downloaded the add-on, I've got to play it ... all over again! ;-)

James: You know it's available on PC too, right? That's what I got it for. Screw the 360. :)

EDIT: I just realized your post is 8 months old and, at the time, it was NOT available for PC. Just ignore me.

I plan on picking this one up once school starts and the check comes in. Between it and Spore, we'll see if I actually have any spare time to get my thesis written.

I actually was working on the localization of that game for my language (will keep that info private, excuse me).

And honestly, this was one of the most horrendous game I have ever played/watched/tried/tested

-Awful storyline
-Awful railroading from start to finish
-Horrible dialogs
-Stoopid AI
-Clichesque characters
-Ugly design

Sorry but for me this is one of the worst games released in a long time.

Wow... so... what would you consider a good game?

It was a really fun game with an entertaining (if somewhat predictable) storyline. What really made the game for me was the decisions you could make in dialog and some of the repercussions of said decisions. I'm glad I played Renegade my first way through because it really allowed me to see how the developers did not pull any punches in what you could/couldn't do.

The best parts I felt were the combat system, the dialogue trees, and the movie "feel". As I mentioned, the storyline was also pretty good, but at some points I really got the feeling that this was originally supposed to be a KotOR storyline, as there are some similarities between the two. The whole aliens vs. humans story was pretty good and well-done, though.

The worst parts: elevators (especially the one on the Normandy, oh God, give me those hours back!), the cluttered inventory, and the random sidequests that took place in one of three pre-generated areas.

Overall, a really great game. I didn't feel it was one of BioWare's best, but it certainly was more entertaining than Neverwinter Nights and expansions.

But to be fair, saying it's not BioWare's best is hardly a huge insult, considering the company has made at least three of the best video games ever made.

This game practically single-handedly got me to go buy an HDTV finally. If you haven't seen this game in HD, you really haven't seen this game. On the other hand, if you have a PC capable of running it, I've heard the PC version is even better, though I have the 360 version.

I love the customization, especially the "Sims-like" facial detail early on. And, of course, the alignment system is lots of fun. First time through, my guy was a total boy scout, and ran with Kaiden and Ashley. But the second time through, I made my guy to look like a grizzled Bruce Campbell, gave him a thin mustache, named him "Buzz", and made him a total renegade. He runs with Wrex and Garrus, and I've dubbed them the "Bad Boys of the Galaxy."

In no other video game RPG have I been this legitimately interested in my characters actions and choices. This game redefined an RPG for me, and I am using it as an inspiration for a futuristic/psionic D&D mini-campaign arc.

I bought it when it first came out and throughly enjoyed it. I liked that I could bring my (admitedly feeble) FPS skills to the combat without it becoming an all out twitch-fest. Skills worked fine, the Space Buggy was fun once you got the hang of it (although I despise those bloody Threasher things!), characters were distinctive and their dialogue enjoyable. Sure, the game ticks all the boxes in the cliche department and it wasn't perfect (The inventory is the worst I've seen in a long time!) but it was damn fun and that's the main thing.

Plus you gotta love a game where...

Spoiler:
...you can convince the main Bad Guy to blow his own brains out!

And I continued my fine tradition of fouling up the in-game romance. Even digital women hate me ;)

Went for both at the same time, eh?

I really hope the sequel bangs out the rough spots, because I love the setting and would like to see the various races and cultures detailed further.

Spoiler:
Also hope that Tali sticks around long enough after the first game to remodel the Mako. Specifically the booster.

GAHHHHHH!!! I don't want to spend the $50 right now on Mass Effect. Please stop praising this game before I go buy it!

It's still $50? Bummer! Games this good should be price-dropped quickly!

Also, you should go buy it anyway! It's one of the best RPGs we'll see this generation, I think.

Nope. I played the good soldier and...

Spoiler:
...Ashley ended up being the cost in the "tough decision" scene.

Not a Final Fantasy fan, eh? There's always Fallout 3. Or Fable 2. And let's not forget Bioware's own Dragon Age and their mysterious "NEW NEXT GEN GAME" that's been sitting on their site for a couple of years now (still hoping it's Jade Empire 2!).

Bummer.

Spoiler:
I honestly thought I could save both if I put enough effort into it, after the game starts giving you that portent of doom feel during the beginning of that mission. Turned out you only get to choose who gets left behind.

I guess Bioware doesn't believe in the "third choice" :(

I was a Final Fantasy fan, but for some reason I've lost a lot of interest in JRPGs in the past few years. I picked up Final Fantasy XII recently, and I appreciate that it's a good game, but I'm not having as much fun with it as I had with FFIX or FFX, for example. So I don't think FFXIII will top Mass Effect for me.

You're right about Fallout 3, though, it does look fantastic. I downloaded some gameplay vids on XBox Live this morning and it's looking better than I could have hoped. The amount of detail going into that game seems mind-boggling.

As for Fable 2 and Dragon Age, they do look interesting, but they're on my wait-and-see list.

Also, perhaps I was speaking with a bit too much hyperbole when I made that comment above! It's certainly the best next-gen RPG out now, and could still be the best at the end of this generation, but there are some possible candidates coming out soon. I will revise and say that it'll certainly be the top 5 RPGs in this generation.

Yeah, FFXII lacked something, didn't it. I mean, the MMO inspired party controls were ok and worked well (an irony considering my past critisism of 4E), The loot and encyclopieda entires went a long way to relieve the pain of XP grinding, and you know what? Balthier is awesome!

And yet...no Tonberrys? No Ifrit, Shiva or Bahamut? No character-specific uber-weapons? No Nobuo Uematsu score? All that and something else I can't quite put my finger on just made it lack the FEEL of a Final Fantasy game.

Oh, and I was disponted by the lack of non-human party members. I wanted a Baanga, DAMNIT!!!

Heck, I'm just glad Australia will be getting the game! Our censors were kicking up a stink because you could use Morphine in the game! All Bethesda ended up doing was changeing the name and the associated syringe icon and it got through! Idiot Censors!!!

*Looks over length of post* I've gone and threadjacked, haven't I? Sorry!

Out of curiousity, since I got back into Mass Effect, has anyone found a Pen & Paper ruleset that kinda fits into this universe??

I've considered running a Mass Effect game based at some point, and I'm thinking I'll just go with a generic RPG system (eg: HERO, GURPS) or use Traveller. I think your best bet would be to find a system you really like and try to adapt the rules to fit the setting. It's not too hard considering that Mass Effect is basically your standard Sci-Fi setting: spaceships, a few aliens, and psychic powers are pretty standard.

I'm not sure how good True20 is for this kind of stuff, but I've heard it's a very simple and streamlined system that is a lot of fun, might be good if you're used to the d20 system. I'm sure there are some sci-fi rulebooks for it somewhere.

I have nearly completed this game (I think) and would like to know if once I've finished the main quest if I'm still able to complete the minor quests (a la Oblivion) or does the game end and any unfinished minor quests will remain unfinished. Thank you.

Basically the latter. If you want to pick up those sidequests, you'll need to replay with another character and go through the storyline again.

Once you hit Vermire, the game is essentially in 'End Game' mode. Without spoiling too much, you go to the Citadel, then get told to go somewhere else to continue the main plot. Once you leave, you can't go back. You can, thankfully, do some of the assignments, as long as they don't relate to the Citadel. Of course, once you hit that planet you're meant to go to, the game really is in End Game mode.

And yes, sadly you can't play the game after finishing it.

Since the sequel is out I should mention a bug with the saves for the first Mass Effect Game. They may have patched this by now but I don't know.
Anyway, I had to beat Mass Effect 1 again from my end game saves to get them to be carried over to the second game. Once I did this the first game save data loaded into ME 2 just fine.
