Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16 , Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 9 aka Dementrius

Now that we've seen then top 32, and have a feel for what the judges were looking for, let's have another crack at it just for fun.

Bring out one of your more suitable "B" items or create new one from scratch! Like so:

Grasping Talons of Avarice

These supple gloves look like the talons of a red dragon, but are actually constructed of thousands of minute rubies with palms of woven gold.

As a standard action, the wearer of the Talons may make a touch attack that transmutes the flesh of the subject into a horrific crust of gold and precious gems (Will DC 16 negates). Any existing open wounds coagulate into macabre clots of rubies, which often weep infected topaz. Emerald cysts and diamond bone-spurs also spontaneously burst from the target’s skin.

The transformation hampers the subject’s movement, dealing 1d6 points of dexterity damage. If the subject is reduced to 0 dexterity it becomes petrified (as flesh to stone). The dexterity damage and the petrifaction can only be removed with spells that counter bestow curse or with direct exposure to sunlight (including the daylight spell).

Exposure to sunlight for 1 round causes the crust to sublime, sloughing off as a mix of evaporating gold and gore. All dexterity damage is exchanged for constitution damage at the end of the round. This constitution damage may be healed normally.

Moderate Transmutation and Necromancy; CL 11th; Craft Wondrous Item, bestow curse, flesh to stone; Price 88,000 gp; Weight 0.5 lb.

Mmmm ... item ... creation ... so ... cathartic.

OK. I'll bite...

Cameo of Calamitous Cacophony

These jewelled cameos depict a regal countenance marred by a scream of absolute terror. The diamond eyes are wide and the ruby studs of its teeth are spread in a grimace of horror. Once per day, as a standard action, the wearer of the cameo can activate the scream power of the cameo. Hideous cries of pain and horror fill the air around the wearer in a 20-foot radius. This acts in all respects as the Scare spell except that the diluted cacophony can be heard as far away as 180 feet, depending on impediments. Use the Audible Alarm section of the Alarm spell in order to determine how far the noise travels. In addition to this power, if the wearer of the cameo is ever within the bounds of a Detect Thoughts spell, the caster of the spell must make a DC 13 Will save or be dazed for 1 round and have the spell disrupted, as his head is filled with screams. The Scare power of the cameo does not function in areas of magical Silence.

Faint Necromancy & Enchantment, Caster Level: 5th, Craft Wondrous Item, Daze, Alarm, Scare; Price 10, 750 gps, Weight -

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16 aka NChance

While I didn't enter any, Dementrius is right; item creation is just all types of happy...

Gauntlet of Mental Weaponry: This translucent crystalline gauntlet serves as a conduit for the mental powers of a soulknife, allowing the wearer to subtly shape his mind blade. As a full round action, the wearer can change the shape of his mind blade to replicate either a club (1d6 bludgeoning) or a shortspear (1d6 piercing). When the soulknife reaches 5th level, he may use his shape mind blade ability with a gauntlet of mental weaponry, allowing him to imitate a warhammer (1d8 bludgeoning), a spear (1d8 piercing), a greatclub (1d10 bludgeoning), or a halberd (1d10 piercing).

If a soulknife splits his mind blade into two weapons, this effect only applies to the mind blade manifested through the gauntlet of mental weaponry, although two gauntlets may be worn, allowing the effect to be applied to both mind blades. One gauntlet of mental weaponry takes up an item slot as a pair of bracers or gauntlets. Unlike most items, two gauntlets of mental weaponry can be worn simultaneously with no problem.

Faint psychoportation; ML 1st; Craft Universal Item; call weaponry, creator must be able to manifest a mind blade; Price 1,000 gp; Weight 1 lb.

Runes of Direction: The creator of this wonderful item is a dwarf who needed a portable trap with various utilities. But when he carve this runes on 6 little triangular stones, that when placed on the floor in same senses, he discover had a magical power differently how imagined. When the arrows is in front of the character, pointed to forward, accelerate the movement in the area of 5ft. range weapons or character in charge earn more velocity, +2 in damage and 10ft in the range increment and speed(land movement). If the character is in the opposite direction of the arrows, all of range weapons and charges in the area of the item will receive -2 of damage and will have range increase and speed (land movement) reduced in 3m, the characters not aware of the item, when cross the area will be throw 3m in the direction that the arrow is pointed and should do a reflexes save (CD 14) or fall. Creatures small or smaller can not cross the arrows flying in the opposite order.
Transmutation (faint); NC 5th; Create wonderful item ; Wind Wall, Haste; Market price 30,000 GP; weight: 1lb.

I'm working on a little something called Vecna's Cursed Coin of Awesome Foresight for next year. Watch for it!

I was toying around with a sleeping powder here...based on all I know now, this may have had a better chance.

I hope there aren't too many Vecna-themed items to crowd out my Prostate of Vecna

that might show up my "Left Testicle of Vecna" entry

There is an entire cottage industry to be made from ransacking Vecna's body and possessions.

Liberty's Edge

I'm sure in certain alleys in Greyhawk, Vecna reliquaries are a dime a dozen, as "splinters of the true cross" and "locks of Mary's hair" must have been.

I'm hoping you're at least planning on calling it something innocuous like Magic Coin.

Dark Archive

I was thought of a cool idea, but I did not have time to formulate it into words: "Book of the Bard". The book would give you some kind of Bardlike ability.

No, the cool name is essential. Mechanically, though, it gives you a +1 insight bonus to Fort saves. But its despicable curse is such that it imposes a -1 penalty to Bluff checks. Truly wondrous!

Grand Lodge Dedicated Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8

I would have liked to work up the tome of mystic soul but I doubt I could have covered the mechanics within the word count available.

Grand Lodge Star Voter Season 8

Well since my Loremaster's Bell didn't make it -- you can check it out in the "Why so Many Augury Items?" Thread -- I'll always wonder if I should've gone with the

Decanter of Oozes

I'm not going to write it out but to create it you gotta cast ooze puppet and the appropriate level summon monster. There'd have to be four different decanters, one for each MM ooze. Open the bottle; get an ooze.

It's an item that sounds cool but is too game breaking. And it's essentially a spell in a box. But it's more flashy than the item I submitted.

-W. E. Ray

In hindsight this is what I should have submitted:

Lesser Lamp of Genie Summoning:

This unremarkable brass lamp appears old and tarnished however if rubbed for 1D4 rounds it will start smoking before summoning a janni who will serve the bearer of the lamp for up to 10 minutes once a day.

Moderate Conjuration: Cl 9, summon nature's ally 5, 4,200 gp

(This item utilizes a variant of the Bag of Tricks (Rust) summoning mechanics)

Star Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9

Awright...I now have a good idea where I went wrong, and will now offer an alternative here:

Blood Nail of Bonebeard the Pirate

Resembling a rusty iron nail, this device has two effects based on whether or not it is inserted/driven into a healthy person.

When driven into a creature's flesh at any point, the nail automatically causes 1 point of damage that cannot be healed until removed. Only the person placing the nail may remove it. However, a targeted Dispel Magic spell can cause it to go dormant long enough to remove it.

If driven into a living creature they gain the sickened condition, but also gain a magical +4 bonus to their Con. At the end of 24 hours, if the target has any disease, they can attempt to re-roll their original save. Success means that the disease is gone, while failure indicates that the nail cannot help with that disease.

Claptrap Bonebeard, an amoral dwarf, got the idea after having suffered from the nail himself. By driving the nail into a foot of a prisoner, they suffer the effects of the nail, and can only move at half speed while the nail remains.

Faint Necromancy and Conjuration; CL:3rd, Craft Wondrous Item, Bear's Endurance, Delay Poison, Doom, Lesser Restoration; Price 3,000 gps, Weight -

Let me know what you guys think...

Word says wordcount is 199.

Intensifier Prism

This stained-glass triangular prism orbits around its owner in a manner similar to an ioun stone. Each prism is associated with one of the schools of magic, which is represented by the colour of the stone.

Abjuration - White
Divination – Yellow
Conjuration - Violet
Enchantment - Orange
Evocation - Red
Illusion - Blue
Necromancy - Grey
Transmutation - Green

If a magic item of the associated school is used by the owner of the prism, the stone will modify its orbit to intercede between the owner and the target, focussing the power of the item (+2 to save DC). The Intensifier Prism does not work on spells cast from staffs.

Moderate Universal; CL 13th; Craft Wondrous Item, Greater Spell Focus, limited wish; Price 42,000 gp; Weight -.

I'd have stuck with the same item, only I'd have spent less time worrying about the mechanics and more time making the thing sound cool

You know, I think the "unidentified horribly shriveled body part of Vecna" would be more fun . . . it only works if you can figure out what it was and are willing to replace your own . . .

**snip** "Ouch!! That smarted.... Oh, dang it.... Guess it wasn't the nose. Maybe its an ear..." Takes a deep breath, pauses and brings the cleaver down....

I have to say I have a marvelous case of the giggles going right now.

Ok, this is just evil (=I like it).

Considering the top 32, I still prefer coming up with story items like the one I submitted, so I just admit difference in aesthetics with the judges.
