A bigger picture.

WTF are that STONE GIANT NINJAS in the background artwork ?

oh,the possibilities....... *chuckle*

Dark Archive

Nope, I believe those are the infamous rune giants we've all been hearing about.

Thank you Mr. Postmonster. That is a badass looking dwarf with a crossbox. Also Rune Giants... Ninja giants... it's all good.

Although you don't see many Stone Giant Pirates around guess the ninja rune giants kicked them to the curb.

They'd be way too big for Stone Giants anyway (which are on the next cover and are Large size). I agree that these seem to be the Rune Giants and look like they're Colossal size.

A dwarven ranger with a lot of ranged feats and favored enemy: giants. The iconic party is going to need someone like him real bad.

Quick, while the ninja rune giants distract them, unleash the ninja kraken!

Oh, he's got more than just ranged feats on his side.

They are indeed rune giants. Their stats will be revealed in Pathfinder 6. They're tough customers; they'd eat a stone giant for lunch and not even notice they had lunch.

And here I was thinking they were fire giants with black skin and red hair. Ah, whatever they are, they're beast. With faces of South-East Asian demons, armor reminiscent of a samurai's and rings on their swords similar to those of some Chinese broadswords, WAR is all over the place and brings it together nicely into something quite intimidating. Kudos!

It's alway nice to see some forward-curving swords, too--you don't see enough of that in D&D.

Hmm.. I wonder what the dwarf will think of Seoni and Merisiel. But then again, I don't see them on that cover. :(

The dwarven ranger in me thanks you a thousand fold, as I'm always prone to play one of the three folk; if I'm not a dwarf then I'm a halfling and if I'm not a halfling then I'm a gnome.

So, more importantly to my vanity weakness, when can we expect the avatar icon and his name?

*grins*

Thanks, ahead of time.

Thats a really cool picture.

Though it got me thinking that I'd like to see a cool looking female Dwarf at some point though I'll admit that this is a tough task for an artist. Paizo has done a good job with their re-imagining the look and feel of a number of creatures so maybe they'll manage to pull that off in the future - who knows?

Yeah, I'd like to see their vision on all the core races, too.

Personally, I think what holds people up a lot with dwarves is the Tolkein inspired "dwarven women have beards" meme, which I don't mind as I like the genetic variation/adaptation concept of it.

Of course, the few people I've seen who RPed a dwarven female with facial hair, always had it as extended sideburns and light fuzz.

*shrugs*

Oh . . . dang it . . . ::melts back into the shadows.::

I think they have to loose the facial hair if they are to be re-imagined as cool. I just don't think there is a way to make them seem cool and have facial hair at the same time.

*scratches head* Reminds me of my dwarven ranger in Forgotten Realms. Nice.

A dwarf and his Crossbow... ah the iconicness of it. Swoon.

It looks like a heavy crossbow, too. Sweet. I've been playing around with the thought of developing either a Combat Style (Crossbow) for the ranger and/or Dwarf Ranger substitution levels to make it easier for dwarf rangers to concentrate on "traditional" dwarven weapon choices (axes, crossbows, hammers, picks).

Combat Style (Crossbow) would probably consist of Rapid Reload at 2nd, Crossbow Sniper at 6th, and Penetrating Shot at 11th. I'm still deciding what changes to make for the substitution levels. Racial Favored enemy at 1st and Toughness instead of Endurance at 3rd are easy choices (as well as upping HD to d10 for the substitution levels), but I'm still figuring out what other one ore two levels I want to change.

EDIT: Funny typo above...

And now we have a wallpaper, Pathfinder #5's cover, albeit it nice, has been replaced.

*grins*

Dragonchess...Personaly I would stick with endurance as the bonus feat. After a dwarves bonus to con, and the d10 HD, do they realy need another three hitpoints? That and I think endurance is way more dwarfy than toughness...Who can you picutre passing out in their armor if not a dwarf?

Passed out in his armor, face down in a bowl of soup. :)

There's the wallpaper.. phew.. looks like Seoni did make it, that looks like her just on the edge of the background there. :)

James mentioned in the thread I linked to above that we will see how "a ranger with a crossbow 'works'" - I'm leaning toward, from how he said it, a ranger combat style that focuses on crossbows as you suggested. It won't be along those lines, though, since it would have to be either original or from the SRD.

"SURPRISE ROUND!!!

Out of the shadow behind that small crate, a giant in a black suit appears and throws shuriken at you."

"Giant? Out of the shadow?"

"He has hide"

"But-"

"If you're good enough at hiding, the shadow a falling leaf throws is enough! That reminds me: The other giant steps out of the leaf shadow and thows his shuriken at you"

"Fine, scratch me with 1d2 ninja stars"

"Those are giants' shuriken. They do 3d8 damage"

"Oh"

"...plus their strength bonus. That's another 25 damage."

"Oh!"

"And, since it's the surprise round, the 10d6 sudden strike"

"OH!"

"And they won init. That's another 4 stars per giant ninja. Each."

"Is there enough left of us to resurrect?"

"Well, they're ninjas. They never leave evidence."

"Wha-"

Good times to be a Rat Bastard Game Master!

I'm on something of a minis buying spree for the rest of the RotRL, and I was wondering if you could spoil the rune giants enough to tell us what size category they are?

in other words none of the WOTC minis will work for them... you could use a 12" G. I Joe in samurai garb though

I'm currently leaning toward the Spawn Necro Cop as having a rather "runish" look to him - and the advantage of a base that's about the right size.

EDIT: Funny typo above...

I decided to have a dwarf ranger emphasize a connection with earth and stone, instead of plants and animals.

Dwarf Ranger Substitution Levels:

HD: d10
Skills: As Ranger
1st- Dwarf Favored Enemy, Earth Sense, Track
4th- Pact of the Earthborn
7th- Meld into Stone

Dwarf Favored Enemy (Ex)- A dwarf's favored enemy ability grants him a +2 bonus on Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Spot, and Survival checks used against creatures of the chosen type, and a +2 bonus on weapon damage rolls. If the dwarf ranger chooses giant, humanoid (goblinoid), or humanoid (orc) as his favored enemy, these bonuses increase to +3. This substitution feature replaces the standard ranger's 1st-level favored enemy feature and affects future improvements to his favored enemy ability. Each time the dwarf ranger gains a new favored enemy, he can increase the bonus for one favored enemy by 2, or 3 if improving the bonus against giants, humanoid (goblinoid), or humanoid (orc).

Earth Sense (Su)- This ability mimics the benefits of the Earth Sense feat (Races of Stone; take a move-equivalent action to determine the number and direction of all creatures touching the ground within 20 feet; you cannot pinpoint the location of any creature by using this ability), and can be used as a prerequisite for other feats. The dwarf ranger does not need to meet the Con and Wis requirement for the Earth Sense ability. This ability replaces the standard ranger's Wild Empathy ability. This is a non-OGL ability that can be switched for a comparable OGL ability at the DM's discretion.

Pact of the Earthborn (Sp)- Once per day, the dwarf ranger can summon an earth elemental, similar to a summon nature's ally spell. The dwarf ranger can summon one earth elemental with HD equal to half his ranger level for a number of rounds equal to half his ranger level. This ability replaces the standard ranger's Animal Companion ability.

Meld into Stone (Sp)- Once per day, the dwarf ranger can meld into stone, as with the spell, with a caster level of one half his ranger level. This ability replaces the standard ranger's Woodland Stride ability.
