There used to be a children's show on BBC in the 1970's, called Noah and Nelly, in which all the animals on their cartoon ark were a combination of male and female, with a head at each end.

I remember thinking exactly the same question, as a 5-year-old.
The fact that on every animal, one head was happy and the other was sad made me think one mouth was having to perform 'double-duty'....Yakk...
