Prince of Redhand - Ominous Fabler's Tale

Age of Worms Adventure Path

Following the first course of the banquet, Zeech commands the Fabler to tell a tale. The Fabler responds by telling a story about a dryad, a wealthy merchant and the dryad's revenge on the merchant. Did anyone actually come up with a humorous story for this to tell to your players? If so, would you be willing to share it with those of us who are about to run Prince of Redhand?

Something from Boccaccio cannot go wrong there :D
Damn I wish i had a copy of the Decamerone..

Damned the lowest levels of the Abyss! I hereby decree that no more good roleplaying ideas are allowed aone I have concluded an Adventure Path!

Just kidding.

This was a great adventure. One worth running again...and thats sayin' somethin'.

What ever someone has come up with, Id like to know as well.

So, out of all the very creative people on this board, nobody came up with an actual tale for the Fabler to tale? I find that disappointing... :)

I felt kind of guilty telling my players only the basis of a story, but I wasn't sure how well telling them an actual story would go over. I mean, they're there to play, not to listen to me talk.

I'm pretty sure my players would dig it, which is why I'm asking.

I have a feeling that my bard player would definately go over the top with a story of his own if he actually had one to compete against.

Liberty's Edge

I'll be running this adventure soon, so I'm interested in such stories as well.

I might come up with a short tale for him to tell if I get a chance before running it; if so, I'll try to make it appropriately ominous.

Ominous Fabler spoiler:

Spoiler:
Since the Fabler has some sinister connection to a later adventure, I'll be tempted to have his story reflect some circumstance that will be relevant to that adventure, so that the PCs can be appropriately creeped out when the Ominous Fabler's tale starts to come true around them. Perhaps it will involve giants and dragons, or a dragonslayer who tracks his quarry to a distant lair, only to find the dragon already dead, but even deadlier than ever...

"And so did the beast, with its hollow eyes of flame, rain destruction down upon our hero. His roar was the sound of all dead things, and in his breath lay the scent of sweet damnation.

In the end, the bones of our brave hero joined the mountain of those who came before, and on this bed of broken hope does the wyrm still perch today, as it waits, patient and quiet as a tomb, for the next in a line of hapless fools to come walking towards their doom."

I haven't decided how much to give away, though; I'll probably try to keep it subtler than that.

Why not let the Fablers tale be played out by the PCs? Let them take the place of a few pregenerated characters- fae trapped by trolls and trying to get out? Let them play through a few obstacles, and if they die, let them play the opponents of the original replacement characters? Give RP XP as needed.

That's not really what I was looking for. Thanks for the idea, though.

Necroidea (look, these threads are great resources, they deserve to be bumped, new threads just scatter the resources, and necromancy in an Age of Worms subforum should not be a surprise to you): The Fabler's story doesn't come back in a literal sense, but later when he's fighting, he makes ironic references to it, quoting memorable lines.

For instance, say the story involves a snake biting someone, and the character says something like, "Bitter is the worm's bite." The Fabler could quote this later if he manages to infest someone.

Basically, try reinforcing the Fabler's flair for the dramatic as something that has outlived even the Fabler himself.

Alternatively, the story could hint at the Fabler's backstory, or impart useful advice (remember, when he's telling the story he's actually a kinda good guy).

I'm running a PbP, so I'll probably write something up when the time comes. I'll post it then.
