Is a halberd a reach weapon ?

3.5/d20/OGL

Good day all,

In the French PHB, halberd is shown as reach weapon in the weapons' chart but the description text lacks the sentence that usually describes reach weapons. Could anyone tell me what the original US version says about it ?

Many thanks in advance !

Bran.

Liberty's Edge

The US PHB and SRD do not list it as a reach weapon. Likewise, there is no listing for it in the Erratta either, I would guess the french version is incorrect.

Correct. Halberd is NOT a reach weapon. The equivalent reach weapon, more or less, is the Guisarme, but it really should be a glaive with atripping hook. Oh well, c'est la vie.

The Exchange

It sure looks long enough to be a reach weapon...Especially the ones in Edinburgh Castle.

The picture in the PHB shows it to be about six feet from end to tip.

I assume that is the 'typical' length in the D&D world.
I've seen pictures of real world halberds (at least I thought they were halberds) that are longer than this.

Even if it isn't a reach weapon, it is a _pole_ weapon, and Dragon(RIP) published an article about a year or so ago about pole weapons which included this feat:
(I am paraphrasing the text, so forgive me if I mange it horribly)

Long Strike
As a full round action you may extend the reach of a pole weapon by five feet for one attack only.

A pole weapon with a normal 10' reach, would reach 15' instead.
A pole weapon, like the halberd, without a normal reach would gain a 10' reach for one attack.

Several other good feats in that article as well.
One of my players (Fighter/Ranger) has taken to the pole weapons and makes use of several feats from that article.

I'm glad you asked this question, Bran. For some reason I thought that halberds are reach weapons. Glaives, guisarmes, lance, longspears, ranseurs, spiked chains, and whips are.
The Dragon article referred to above is in issue 331. The fighter class act in 338 also has a polearm feat.
