Live Free or Die Hard

Movies

Anybody else excited? As hard as it is to get really excited about movies any more.

Anyway, I was a little dubious when I first heard about it, particularly that Len "Underworld" Wiseman was directing, but then I heard a story that Len had the script totally rewritten because it wasn't at all like the John McClain he knew and loved. That gave me hope.

As did the 8 minute clip on Yahoo.

I think it'll be cool. I saw a preview of it when I went to see Pirates III this last weekend. The old Die Hard movies are pretty much THE quintessential "guy movies" of all time. It's hard to argue with a legacy like that.

When I heard about the film, I though "oh, no". I felt that another sequel was a bad idea. Plus, the fourth film in almost every series sucks. (Seriously: "Phantom Menace", "Lethal Weapon 4", "Hghlander: Endgame", "Superman 4", "Batman & Robin", "Alien Resurrection", "American Pie: Band Camp", Goblet of Fire is by far the weakest of the Harry Potter films... I'm sure there are some more, some exceptions, and some people who disagree with my assessment of some or all of the films I listed.)

However, then I saw the trailer before "Pirates of the Caribbean: At the World's End", and was suddenly converted. So, now I'm quietly optimistic.

Meh.

I'll give this one a miss, thanks... The Hollywood sequel machine once again overexploits to the death what originally had been a good movie.

"You totally just killed that helicopter with a truck!"
"Yeah... I did."

Yeah, I'll probably go, if for no other reason than the guys will drag me to it.

Oh, and to hear this line... "I'm gonna go kill this guy and get my daughter. Or go get my daughter and kill this guy. Or kill all of 'em!"

Liberty's Edge

It's PG-13! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Now he can't say, "Yippe kiyay mother f%*+er!"

Oh yes he can! PG-13 is pretty much aloud to use any language it wants and kill as many people as it feels like. It just can't show scenes of 'gratuitous violence' with like, entrails strewn all over the place and headless bodies suspended from meathooks. I think strong racial slurs are similarly restricted in PG-13, though.

...And no boobies either.

Saw a bus with "Yippiekiyay Mo-" along the side when I was in Vancouver, BC over the weekend. No other reference than those letters white on black in a jagged font. Made me smile so hard it hurt my face.

A reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle liked Live Free or Die Hard:

(Cut and paste, I'm feeling too lazy to make a working link right now)

He does say there's stuff that if you decide to nitpick, will maybe make you not like the movie, but I'm prepared to ignore some things in my enjoyment of a Die Hard movie.

I must admit I am excited...I hope its not dreadful though, as I have LOVED the three Die Hards to date (even two, it gets a bad rap, how can you not like a movie that starts with a paramilitary madman training naked in his hotel room...)

Oh and Corey, you best get back to your profile...I want serious competition lass! Though horseback archery lessons in preparation for the coming apocalypse is most definitely a good start.

I might even try and see this tonight if I can!

Curse to my joys.

Ah, a job...well there is your first mistake. You can never compete with me as long as you are fettered to emploment. ;-)

Then again being a Czarina of Paizo is tops as far as I'm concerned. You're living the dream Corey, every poster here wants to work where you do! Congrats!

Please somebody hire me...I'm so lonely out here in unemployed limbo! :-(

Didn't get to see LFDH yet, perhaps this evening!

Scarab Sages

I went and saw the movie last night with my wife. I thought it was awesome. It had jsut the right amount of action, good one-liners, and impossible occurences to make a great flick. Bruce Willis was great as always, and Justin Long (the MAC from I'm a MAC/I'm a PC) was really entertaining as the sidekick. The guy who played the villain (whom I'm unfamiliar with) hit just the right level of smarmy asswhole to make his defeat very enjoyable. Kevin Smith's bit part was great.

All in all, a very good addition to the series (I think better than #2). In my humble opinion it was worth the $9+ per ticket I spent to get in.

I also found out this morning, that the theater we went to experienced a power outage during the second showing (we went to the first) and those folks missed the last 10 minutes or so of the film.

If you don't know Timothy Olyphant you are missing out! Watch HBO's Deadwood, The Girl Next Door, Go, or A Man Apart for good performances.

Ah ha! He was the "bad guy" in The Girl Next Door, wasn't he?

Yep that's him!

Watch LfoDH last night and damn was that the one of the better sequals or what!?!? I love the line about 1-800-HENCHMEN! He messed up a lot of bad guys... Chair down the stair, SUV going down, Dumpster jousting... the stunts were awesome!!! I'm also glad the trailers didn't give away the whole plot.

Best part of the movie is the first 30 minutes, aka "who is killling the great hackers of America". Despite the over-the-top last 20 minutes, I really enjoyed the movie as a mindless diversion.

Better than pirates or shrek 3 in that regard.

I enjoyed this movie very much, it had the right amount of action and segues between the action.

Spoiler:

The line about being "that guy" can so totally apply to the PCs, don't ya think?
I also really enjoyed the heart-to-heart between McLaine and Farrell in the car about being a hero. That really made the movie for me.

Liberty's Edge

I loved it...both time I saw it. And I'm sure I'll love it the third time I go to see it...
