Greetings all-

I recently picked up a few of those Dreamblade minis to use in my D&D game. Nice sculpts but I hate the big, square bases (I have the same feelings about the new square-based Star Wars minis). The base of the Dreamblade minis is actually made up of two parts. The inside is the same soft plastic as the mini itself, and then there is an outer, hard plastic square with stats and stuff. I tried to separate the two but couldn't, so i just cut the figures off the base, just below the feet. Now I have a little figure.

If I want round bases, like the regular D&D minis, what should I do?

BTW, I also have some little plastic animals I've found that are about the right size to D$D minatures. I'd like to put them on bases too.

Things I've considered ...

1. finding the cheapest possible D&D minis with the right size base, cutting the mini off and gluing the new ones on (I's be okay with the words on the bottom not matching).
2. buying bases for metal minis and gluing to those, but those seem to have big slits cut into them that I don't think I will cover. plus, many of these bases have terrain detail that I don't want.
3. somebody here at the Paizo site sells little magnetic circles, I gues to go under the bases. Could I just use those AS bases?

I'd love some opinions/advice, especially from folks who tinker with their minis (that sounds bad ;)

PS- I got all this stuff cheap, so I'm okay with a few butchered minis if suggestions don't work out. What I'd like to avoid is buying a big pack on bases and only using one. Thanks again!

You can buy bases at your Local Gaming store. They sell them in bags and have various sizes and shapes(1",1.5",2",circle, square and hex).
I think that anywhere you can buy Warhammer stuff should have them also.

Yup, get Warhammer bases. Also, the slots in slotted bases can be filled with modelling putty.

I like to tinker with minis.

I haven't tinkered with my WotC rubber minis yet, but i will. If you find out what kind of glue works best let us know.

I took the base of of the halfling slinger, sculpted the cloak a bit witn an exacto knife, and hot glued him to the slighlty shaved back of the timber wolf. Works awesome for a 1/2ling druid or out rider, and i have multiples, so I can use them independantly as well, as wolves don't tend to fit in well in taverns :)

We use nickels or quarters as bases.

Warhammer 40k bases are generally your best bet. If you find a FLGS that Breaks down the boxed sets for bits sales you can generally pick up up for a quarter, otherwise you are looking at a few bucks for a bag of mor than you need.

Some do have slots, some don't.

And Warhammer bases are square, warhammer 40k bases are round, since the distinction is important.

I am surprised at this thread, and stoked because I have been modifing D&D minis for three years or so... since they came out with the plastic stuff.

I use the round bases, often filled with modeling putty to give it some heft if the mini needs it. If you decide you need magnets for the bases check out a magic shop for magnets, as they often have magnets with a higher gauss rating ( a stronger magnet) which makes the mini stick better.

Modifing plastic minis is loads of fun. Changing weapons is the easist part and gives I think the greatest impact to the players as to thier opponent. I use a pen knife or modeling drill to make hole. I found using a heated wire or needle was to inconsistant and I wasted a few before I abandoned that idea. I use a slow acting superglue wather than a fast acting one as I feel it has better adhesive proporties. The Reaper minis weapon packs and spiked chain packs make for some fun at the gaming table.

Here you go! :)

I tried seperating the mini off the base of the dream blade figs. They got those things glued in TIGHT! Good luck...

Washers. They're the right size, and they're cheap.
