Multi Class now or no???

3.5/d20/OGL

Hey guys, I'm level 20 ranger and i was wondering if you guys think its think it worth multiclassing now or not???

Now is the worst possible time for you to multiclass; you'll be missing out on those bonus epic feats and additional fav enemy bonuses.

I agree, now is probabaly not the best time to multiclass.

Although, if you take your next three levels in Scout, then take the feat from complete scoundrel which stacks scout and ranger levels for skirmiah and favored enemy, you will get a lot of return for the rather low investment. I am not sure how cool epic rangers are, so it still may not be worth it.

I think in terms of character power, your best bet is probably to stay focused in the ranger class. However, there are options that might seem more attractive after level 20. Your attack bonuses and saving throw progression are now set, no matter what class you choose. If you were to pick up levels of Wiz/Sor, you would have more magic to help your ranger attack style, and perhaps more mobility, too. The drawbacks are: lower hit dice, little chance to overcome SR, and several levels of investment before worthwhile spells are gained.

There are two other variables that need to be considered:

1) Will your DM use the Epic Level rules pretty much as written? I hear a lot of people talk about how they do not like capping BAB, and saves and such.

2) What is the characters race? If Ranger, or the target class are not favored for your race, then you are far from a good point to multiclass. Of course, this assumes your DM uses the XP penalty for large differences in classes while multi classing...

Hey guys thanks for all you help! The problems I have with multi classing have been brought up save one: my DM says anylevel after 19 must be gained by doing a "Legendary" quest. . .im trying to pitch the idea that it shouldnt take a legendary event to take a frist level in anything. . .but if he stick to his guns i cant bring my slef to spend all this time, power, effort, thought, etc. for a first level wizard class!know what i mean? . . . . . .

So don't do a quest for a first level in Wizard. Do it for, say, the first level in Tempest. Better yet, if you're anywhere near meeting the prerequisites, stick with ranger for another few levels and multiclass into Agent Retriever or Legendary Dreadnought. The former is basically the ideal class for a bounty hunter and treasure hunter, the latter is either an Unstoppable Force or an Immovable Object, when he chooses to be. For that matter, Horizon Walker isn't too bad once you get into Planar abilities -- Dimension Door once every 1d4 rounds? Yes please!

Of course, just sticking with ranger for the bonus feats and continuation of your abilities isn't a bad idea either.

I found rogue works well with a ranger after 20th level. You have the good saves and base attack of a ranger combined with sneak attack of a rogue. The skills are very close so you can retain max in many of them. I have a hard time seeing a 20th level ranger and a 1st level wizard. Would you even cast a spell before 22nd level. (Maybe I am thinking of previous editions were you had to use your new class to advance) Now a 20th rogue/1st wizard could sneak attack with spells.
