Pathfinder vs Game Mastery and Price

Dragon and Dungeon Transition Discussion

OK, I'm sad about the Dungeon and Dragon licenses getting yanked like everyone else, and have loved Paizo's work on both mags like everyone else. I had just renewed right before the announcement so have 12-13 issues left of both mags.

I like the Adventure Paths. But due to their nature it gets harder and harder to use them as one-offs as the plot thickens - you're either in for the whole path or not. (Uh so you run across this island and there's this chick and you need to defend their city from a huge assault! With dinosaurs!) As a result, though I like to read them, I haven't run an Adventure Path yet. And the new Pathfinder is expensive! Yes yes, 96 pages, no ads, quite so. I'm not saying it's not value for the money, but it's just a lot of money, more than 3x a Dungeon sub. And with the shipping cost and slight subscription discount it's not much cheaper than buying it from the newsstand. So it becomes hard for me to justify subscribing rather than waiting, checking them out real well, and then buying just like any other semi-expensive gaming product.

I wonder why Game Mastery, which is much less expensive, isn't being offered in a subscription format. Or why the idea of a "Dungeon that's not called Dungeon" isn't being done that has more variety - I like the smaller Critical Threat/Side Trek/Whatnots. And heck, sell some ads, if it reduces my cover price I'm happy to read them. Paizo has an existing relationship with many suppliers, who might even be happier with a mag that might be more inclusive of support for other OGL materials.

Just some thoughts...
Ernest
