i'm curious if anyone is aware of an adventure wherein the PCs become involved in a plot of a demon or devil (either would work in this case) who schemes to overthrow their rival or liege. i would like this coup d'etat to be a major part of the adventure itself, not just backstory. i am drawing a blank trying to come up with a published module or a dungeon magazine adventure similar to this. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Aside from the Blood War I don't really think demons and devils meet often enough to form great rivalries. They are all too worried about being stabbed in the back/eaten by their own kind!
thank for the response phil. sorry if i wasn't clear. your point is my point as well, actually. i'm not looking for a devil vs. demon fight, but some demon:demon OR devil:devil action.

I'm not sure that's legal in certain states.
--SPOILERS--
The STAP seems to be building up a scheme between Malcanthet and Demogorgon. It's not overly pronounced thus far, but we're only about halfway through. We'll seewhat happens later on, but so far, there has been a minor amount of subterfuge placing the PCs as tools in the hands of the Queen of the Succubi against the Prince of Demons.

To add to Fizz's comments--the two volumes of the Fiendish Codex have all kinds of raw material to help create such rivalries. In any campaign where when major demon lord or archduke of hell features as principal bad guy, it would be easy to get some ideas for how to involve machinations of said bad guy's equally nasty rivals in the plot.
Minor spoilers for my RHOD players follow.
I'm presently thinking about how to do this for Red Hand of Doom--and I don't think it will take more than a few devilish minions in the early phases. Really--think who would be interested in corrupting your characters, find out what sorts of agents they have, and send some out to make contact, appropriately disguised. This builds up to more major efforts to enlist their aid and or "convert" them later.

Demons and Devils are constantly at each other's throats. They have a deep seated hatred of each other going back to the dawn of time. They are constantly trying to gain an advantage over each other.
I don't know much about the Demons but the Devils have a constant political struggle going so it would be relativley easy to get PCs involved. The Feindish Codex II is a great book, loaded with information on Devils.

I dont remember anything off hand; but i write adventures all the time where demon or devils are trying to move up their internal heirarchies and embarrass or kill those above them and seek to use the party as instruments to enact these plans and would certainly be willing to help you tailor something to your game if you like. I don't know how you view the outer planes, but in my view they are pretty static from a pc's standpoint but that is not actually the case; whereas everything in the outerplanes is very controlled they use the prime material plane as game tokens in their games of power. The princes in power are always playing off the chamberlains against the senchenals against the courtaseans against the whatever. Those on the prime material are the tokens or counters to show success or failure. For instance, this infighting can start as simple as one demon prince telling one of his followers to see that in the city of blah blah; on the 6 day of the 6th month at the 6th hour that live hearts of six different good races with six different classes must be sacrificed in his honor. If he is successful he gains power and prestige; if he fail; dismemberment and pain. Now demons are going to begin lining up for; against; for sale either way; try to make him fail or succeed or tell others; this could really escallate which is really what the demon prince wants ie to test his followers abilities and keep them busy and not focusing on him. This sort of thing is ripe to pull the pc's back and forth by various factions. The easiest would of course be the demons in guise who tell the pc's to stop this horrible event.

Indeed, I thought that was pretty much the point of Savage Tide AP...Demogorgon plotting against...Orcus, was it? and Malcanthet against Demogorgon...which side do characters join?

yeah, savage tide was what got me thinking of this in the first place, but it'll be a while 'til i get to that. i wanted to do some foreshadowing and stage setting with some other baddies first in prep for that.
anyway, thanks for all of the ideas. i will do some reading in the fiendish codices and re-read por. house to see what i can come up with.

Sorry for not reading your post properly Flamewalker. It was pretty late at night (I think). The number of demon vs. demon and devil vs. devil encounters are virtually endless. Just pick any two demon lords and they're likely to be at war. Take other peoples advice and look in the two fiendish compendiums. Those books should give you tons of ammunition (as should James Jacobs Demonomicon articles in DRAGON).
Actually, that makes me think. I would like to see a major demon lord go up against a powerful devil in a plot that doesn't involve the Blood War. At least it would be different.
