Dragon Novel Adaptations

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

Now that #352 has been such a success, what novel(s) would you like to see adapted in the future?

Lets see, Fafhrd and Mouser would be great for a 3.5 update . . . wait . . . Runequest snagged them.

Conan would . . . wait, Mongoose did that one . . .

I got one (sort of, I know there are other versions of this theme):

Le Morte d'Arthur . . . d20 3.5 version of the Knights of the Round Table, Morgan Le Fey, Mordred, and all of that jazz. I know there have probably been some d20 books on this, but I would like to see the talent that Paizo could throw at this. Acutally, you could make this more interesting by having different interpretations of the same characters/situations (Mallory's, T.H. White's versions from The Once and Future King, etc.)

Dante's Inferno/Paradise Lost . . . good excuses to come up with stats for more demons/devils/archdevils, as well as some cool infernal hazards and encounter regions.

Okay, this would be more of a d20 Modern/d20 Apocalypse setting one, but A Canticle for Leibowitz (mainly the first two eras, the third not so much). I think I'm the only one in Central Illinois that has ever read that book, and its one of my favorites.

Grand Lodge

Glen Cook's Garrett, P.I. series. Takes place in a great location, features some weird monsters and magic, and involves a bunch of interesting new races. What's there not to like?

I'd love to see a Paizo treatment of his Tower of fear as well, but that might just be me...

I know I loved when Dragon presented stats for the characters from the "Rage of Dragons" trilogy and "The War of the Spider Queen" books.

I am not really saying I want issues devoted to entire worlds or settings, But I like to see great characters stated out.

What I have really wanted to see are stats for Erevis Cale and Riven from the "Cale" trilogy. I think there is a new series with them too, something like "the Shadow War"?

The Twilight War, book one of which, Shadowbred, is already out. I would definately recommend the book, especially if you liked other Cale novels.

Cale's stats can be found here:

(He also has these posted on his blog)

Liberty's Edge

Aaaah...Giants in the Earth.....fond, fond memories.

Well...I once heard of some book called the Dying Earth that has a magic system that was really similar to D&D's. Maybe if we sort of blended the two together...it would perfect the magic system!

Wait...what? Oh...crud...so much for that idea folks...

:P

* Moorcock's "Elric" series

* George R. R. martin's "Game of Thrones" series

* Stephen R. Donaldson's stuff

etc., etc., etc.

The 'Deathsword' trilogy, I'd love to see that in D&D.

Actually Martin's setting already got a Dragon write up some time ago. (I don't remember when exactly and my magazines are not handy.) Also Game of Thrones has it's own setting book put out by Sword and Sorcery if memory serves.

i find martin scott's thraxas novels a lot of fun - a noir-ish private detective investigates crimes in a vaguely roman influenced fantasy city with orcs and elves and drug abuse! ideal fodder for d&d campaigns.

just started reading philip reeve's mortal engines series, set on a post apocalyptic earth where motorised cities prowl the plains of europe 'eating' smaller towns. nice and quirky with guilds and airships and household gods and the 'barbaric' anti-traction league who walk on the bare earth!

long out of print i suspect but i loved thomas burnett swann's minotaur books. at the same time a whimsical take on greek mythology with a slightly dark undercurrent of adolescent hopes and fears.

and a vote for all my childhood favourites like earthsea and narnia

oh and anything by fritz lieber.

but personally i think any future novel adaptations should really be limited to just a few pages. please!

Fritz Lieber stuff would be great, but Mongoose Publishing just came out with a Lankmhar setting. I know there are more books for it coming soon too.

If anyone is interested, Stephen King's Dark Tower series is coming out in a comic book by Jae Lee. The art looks pretty good, as you would expect. I believe it is set to come out on Feb. 7th actually.

I second Dante's Divine Comedy.

The Master and Margarita could be adapted to a DnD setting. It would provide a great twist on demons and devils roaming the Earth.

An adaptation of Candide would be the best of all possible adaptations.

I only read two Dune novels but they gave me several ideas for Dnd. Mostly, the seemed to be source material for Dark Sun campaigns.

War of the Worlds should be considered as well.

Man, you have to be familiar with the book to get it, but that's really funny.

HG Wells' Time Machine, solely for Morlocks.

I believe there's a thread from right before Christmas about The Island of Dr. Moreau where a few of us were brainstorming. Those grotesqueries could be interesting.
