Davey Jones in the Savage Tide

Savage Tide Adventure Path

Liberty's Edge

So I have introduced an npc to the party known as Davey Jones. He is an aquadic mindflayer(reaper makes a great mindflayer pirate mini) with these possible lvls Swashbuckler/scourge of the seas/ledgendary captain and a villian lvl i am makeing up called a soulbroker.Davey will broker a deal with dark powers for a pc, in exchange for being brought back to life lets say or something else.the pc will have to serve on the flying dutchman and to the dark power davey brokers the deal with after a set amount of time. Davey will have a gambleing weakness (dice). The pc will put a portion of his soul in the locker (a chest)one of many Davey has. which are really leomunds secret chests (guarded by a kracken).I have also told the party he is the son of the Mohter of All. (Not really possible ,step mom I guess)I have not got him all worked out yet and was looking for some ideas and was wondering what everyone thinks of this idea.or do you have a better version of what Davey might be in the savage tide.

honestly, it seems kind of...well- it is a blatent rip off. if the players don't mind- then fine- but what does it do to accompish the plot? could that be done with something less obvious? Sure- Davey Jones is cool and all- but I think that your players diserve a foe that isn't part of a summer blockbuster. maybe make him a half slaad/mind-flayer with lots of cleric levels- after the pact is fulfilled you are implanted with an egg that turns you into the same.as far as a weakness goes- don't forget that he can't go on land but once a decade.

I'd echo Paslawski's comment. This isn't Pirates of the Carribean, it's a seperate original plotline.

I have to second (or third) this. The way Mr. Bulmahn did it with King Kong was great! What a twist on the lovely giant ape: Olangru!

Do whatever you want for your home campaign. Take source material from what ever you desire. If your players like it have fun. People often relate to something they know.

What I might suggest is to alter it enough so that it has that familiar POTC feel with a difference. Maybe the name Davy Jones could be changed? Perhaps his crew are all aquatic aberrations including a colossal aboloth who acts as a living ship? Image he appears outside of Sasserine and demands tribute or he releases a band of Athach to raid the city? THey also demand fresh souls to devour? Maybe this Davy Jones (or Daya Vidja the Mindflayer) is cursed and does need his heart which is a magical item that the party finds while on the STAP?

I put Davey into Stap because the Ebberron book mentions makeing the games like your favorite movies. He seemed to fit. And with the cool mindflayer pirate mini I have painted it seemed like fun.AS far as advanceing the plot I used him to help bring a dead pc back in a party with no way to raise dead or reincarnate. And he will help the pc s make deals with the other demons ( like the Succubus Queen) (my party already thought he was the sargasso for some reason)And THe Isle of Dread is not that original. Its a well rip off of the old king kong movie. And who ever wrote the screen play for Pirates #1 had to play the Isle back when it was X1. Just check out the name of the old captain in the log you hand out to the players .Rory Barbarosa. Doesnt Jeffrey Rush s character have the same name, Or close ,and A Cursed Black Pearl ?????Not to start an online battle here......

That was an extremely unsensitive, ignorant, and offensive remark.

Offensive remark removed.

There is a difference between using a movie and recreating it. Personally- as a player- I would think- wow, how lame- i wonder how many souls I am worth...oooooh i wonder when the kraken is going to attack, Hey, lets fight in a a mill wheel!
The original Isle of Dread is not only a rip off of King Kong, but lots of classic pulp- jules verne, robert howard, and the guy who wrote tarzan.

Cribbing from movies is fine, just remember to change enough of the details so that it's not blatantly obvious.

That being said, I think the ideas you've got are cool - just tweak 'em in one direction or another for your own flair.

Unfortunately the OP stated that he HAD already introduced this NPC and had him Resurrect/raise a deceased party member.....Too late for much tweaking and already blatantly obvious.

oh I didnt mean the isle was a rip off but is like those books and movies and i didnt plan on a fight with him or the kracken (but i bet there is one in this path)After the saragasso a pc who lost his character wanted to keep playing him and with no way to bring him back said he sell his soul and Davey just kind of came about at the end of the night, the pcs have always been talking about him,(all of em took sailor skillp pts)I only put him there because the pcs thought the mother of all was Davey and the vine horrors were the souls of the sailors who died there.,and that 100ft pit was the locker.I had only added a few things to the path, sound track music from pirates andI gave them the old captains log from x1 when they were under parrot island with undead pirates, they heard the rumor of the wounded kraken in blood bay,the savage pirates look like they have shark teeth and some tentecales, they thought they were daveys crew attacking the cove, they found some of the fragments of a black pearl,in tamoachan they have the gold idol of the bat god, they want to get rid of it (Hope they do nt)because it has to be cursed (the bat god is aztec or mayan isnt it)and the map room of tamoachan was like the map room in raider of the lost ark.And after a few storms and brother hood pirates they were sure journeys end was the locker. So i didnt think davey would be such a bad idea to put in for fun ,i have been running the path with hardly any changes ,these elements just pop up in our session.and this path just seemed to have these elements written into it from the past x1 to this AP.the first thing i thought of when i saw pirates curse of the black pearl i thought of THE ISLE OF DREAD>>>>

Give Davey Jones a 4-armed sahuagin fallen prince as Bosun.
And a mutated sahuagin with a hammerhead shark's head called "Carpenter." With a parrot that sits on one side of his head. And a pegleg.

Lantern Lodge

While the idea dose not seem too appealing to myself, after some thougt I could kind of understand where you think it could fit.
I mean, the savage pirates COULD possibly be like davey's crew, and their were undead pirates in the first adventure, and the beautiful noblewoaman who becomes a sword fighter... and ancient civilazaion treasure and... and...
BLACK PEARLS?! 0_0;

wait, no, they're shadow pearls. ok, false alarm people.

funny thing i just got a mini with a guy who has a parrot and a peg leg,and i could have the 4 armed bosun be gargantuan (clash of the titans baby)and i guess i wont go with the idea of a dread pirate and having lavinia's middle name be buttercup ,darn all that work on the fire swamp gone down the tubes....LOL

AND....you should pick a party member that Davy Jones needs for a position on his crew...a cleric(for sawbones) mayhap.
And have Davy tell him..."I'm keeping my eye on you. I'll be watchin' yer career."
