Hello everyone. I've noticed a great diversity of opinion on these boards (the more the merrier) but I've been wondering about some of the things that might have influenced those ideas. Age, amount of time exposed to the game, profession (Wis), and other interests/hobbies might all factor into it. So if we knew each others backgrounds, it might help figure out the impetus behind some of the ideas proposed here. For example I'm 23, haven't been playing for too long relative to most of those out there (only three years or so), I've studied accounting at college and other interests are science, geography and history, and cooking. I understand age can be a sensitive subject for some, so if you want to leave it out, no problem.

Age: 27.
Time Playing: 17 years.
Hobbies & Interests: Uhh...a lot? Cooking, reading (anything, I'm fairly voracious in that fact), computers/tech, art, games (all 'of em, I'm not picky), music, outdoorsy stuff (hiking, camping, I'd like to get into kayaking, biking, walking, fishing).
Edju-muh-cation: High School Diploma. CompTIA A+ certification. No formal college training or eduction, aside from class on Photoshop and a semester of Figure Drawing.

Sure, why not?

Age 19.
Time Played About three years? I forget exactly when I started.
Hobbies/Interests Fantasy Novels, Writing, Video Games, Drama, Singing, Rambling Monologues, Cooking (in a low pressure environment,) anything absurd, making the seemingly absurd sensible.
Height/Weight Six inches taller than whoever designed my workplace/Enough to keep me on the ground.
Blood Type Wet.

I know what FH means, since I am just about the same size (maybe 5'8 3/4" -> 1m74-1m75), for a grand total of 185 lbs (about 84 kgs), weighing about 20 lbs above my "ideal weight".

Age : I am 35 (born on september the 11th : it was my 30th b-day in 2001), french living in the very close suburb of Paris.
marital status : I am maried, and we are expecting a baby (1st one), with 4 months 1/2 to come.

RPG : I have been playing since 1984-1985, D&D, AD&D 1st, 2nd (not skills & powers options), 3rd and 3.5, and some "schwarze Auge" (the black eye), CoC, Runequest (once or twice), Stormbringer & Hawkmoon, but always going back to D&D !!

Hobbies :
- I love A LOT movies (silent ones and the US 30's to the 50's especially, Kurosawa, and also good directors from today like Eastwood, Soderbergh, Tim Burton, Miyazaki, John Lasseter...
- I read lots of "european" comics (Hugo Pratt, Comès, Rosinski, Rabaté, Guibert, Giraud, Franquin, Larcenet, David B., Goscinny...), old & new authors.

I have a good bunch of real good friends.
- listening to lots of diferent kinds of music.

studies / work : accountings also, and I currently work for the government about homes / houses / roofs for people who have immigrated in France.

Just like FH, I am a "Jack of all trades 4/Master of None 3/player-of-all-games 2" (prestige class !).

Age: 19

Education: High school salutatorian (don't confuse with valedictorian, that's one above me; most classmates claim the ranks should have been switched), morning college classes during senior high school year, now full-time freshman at Indiana University Southeast.

Wisdom score: Yeah, the funny thing about that is, the higher one lists, the lower people think it really is.

Time Playing: Started sophomore year in high school so 3 years.

Hieght/Weight: ~6'1''/been a while since I weighed myself, but around 180-190 (not too much muscle there, either); what does this have to do with gaming experience?

Played for ~18 years...variety of games. In the early age I played D&D but never really got into AD&D except for fascinating worlds and good magazines Dragon and Dungeon. Meanwhile dabbled a good deal with games like RuneQuest, Cyberpunk 2020 and especially Ars Magica and GURPS. D&D became interesting when I chatted with a friend when 3rd edition came out and started to go through game mechanisms I thought sucked in AD&D...and he just went "that's changed" "that's corrected" "changed too"...

I love watching a good hockey game with my friends and a couple of beers.
Education: High School Diploma, Prof. Diploma in Accounting, some courses in commercial graphics design. In my many jobs, I also learned the art of working with glass (making/repairing store-front windows and table-tops).
Current Job: I now work as an Administrative Technician for the Government of Quebec (Immigration: Financial Ressources).
Hopes and Dreams: I hope to one day win a big chunk of money so I can stop working and focus on my hobbies and interests (see above).

Well, if you stood two inches tall and weighed less than a slightly oversized d12, you'd probably think that it had impacted your gaming experience too! I can't even play a wizard because all it takes is the phrase "I cast Lightning Bolt", and everybody goes off to buy pizza while I try to throw my 10d6. Don't even get me started on other classes... rogues with their Sneak Attack dice are right out.

Seriously, I only mentioned it because it seemed like something unrelated and useless, and therefore perfect for an unclear/silly answer. Then I guess it caught on for some reason.

The stat-block format was indeed inspired!

What really amazes me is the unproportionately large fraction of us are in the same age range (mid-30's) with the same start time (ca. 1980-1982). Coincidentally (or not), James Jacobs' "Who's the New Guy?" in Dungeon #139 implies he's in that range, too. Maybe that was D&D's heyday, never to be seen again? I'm somewhat less surprised at the number of us with martial arts or firearms interests ("Hey! Let's beat up the game dork... Ooooof!"); I spent 5 years practicing taekwondo like 20 hours a week (alas, now I'm lucky not to trip over my own feet, but at least my nose hurts when it rains).

Just some observations. Now back to your regularly-scheduled post...

Yeah, acting and storytelling takes abit to get used to but the fact is that some of the visually most beautiful films I have ever seen come from silent era...Murnau's Faust and Sunrise are captivating films as is eg. Lang's Metropolis.

Sorry for the OT wandering...

It's interesting that most people avoid explicitly stating their gender; is it because the avaters serve as their faces or simply because it doesn't affect their combat stats?

This 34-year-old average joe has worked everywhere from video store clerk, to window making/repair, to big-surface renovation store vendor, to Financial Analyst for the Quebec Government (and I'm leaving out alot of others). He stands 5-feet five-inches tall and weighs 260 pounds (Although this weight may seem exessive, I have been weight-lifting for many years, so there's a lot of muscle in there. Still, I really should shed a few pounds to add some days to my life expectancy (damn pizza and beer!!))

It's interesting that most people avoid explicitly stating their gender; is it because the avaters serve as their faces or simply because it doesn't affect their combat stats?

I fall into the former category. Except for the horns, I pretty much look exactly like my "wingclipper" avatar... Then again I figure the horns are appropriate in a figurative way because I am always h-... a Capricorn... Yay goat boy! *dances capriciously*

a 31 year-old senior in physics at siu-c, tog is preparing to (hopefully) move on to grad school after (hopefully) graduating in the spring. 6 feet tall and rather not in the weight range he should be, he enjoys physics, reading (lovecraft, fantasy of any sort, some sci-fi), some video games (modern prince of persia line especially), rules debating, and music (metal, hardcore, punk, techno, industrial, rock, alternative, grunge). former line of work (factory, mass producing {ick...} doughnuts) has instilled a serious esteem issue if he has to return to said line of work. began with gurps about 18 years ago (was it really that long ago??) and played through the horrible 2nd edition years (hooray fixes from 3rd ed!). also enjoyed mage, vampire, ars magica, and other fine games from other companies. incurable comic book geek. lichdom attained as a result of accident in attempt to destroy senile lihc, ate the lihcs leftover breakfast... (some of you will find that humorous, others may not). currently works in a research laboratory at siu-c, and works on the side as a bodyguard in an entourage for a close friend (doesnt get paid for the more 'hazardous' job).
