Underwater equipment

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

There was a Dungeon adventure several years ago (before d20 i.e. 2nd edition AD&D) in which the party was hired to explore underwater using special underwater equipment akin to deep sea diving suits. I think it was for low level parties (3rd level?). I can not find my old copy of the issue. Can anyone tell me, which Dungeon issue this was? Also, can someone send me details on the underwater equipment (how long pc's can breathe underwater, AC of suits, movement in suits, penalties in movement, etc.)? Othwerwise, I guess I will make something up. But I specifically remember the equipment from that adventure and thought it would fit perfectly.

In an upcoming d&d home game, I would like to have my 3rd to 4th level party explore underwater. The equipment from that issue is ideal, since the party does not have access to water breathing spells, scrolls, or potions yet. Also, if anyone knows of a good source for more underwater equipment, please let me know. I looked through many of the complete books, including Complete Adventurer, Stormwrack, and Arms and Equipment Guide, and the best I could find was a few weapons (underwater crossbow, harpoon, etc.) and a swimmer's kit (goggles, fins, breathing tube).

Thanks.

There is "Whitelake Mine" by Willie Walsh. That appeared in Dungeon #18. The PCs are hired by gnome to fight off some pesky giant pikes that are threatening his underwater mining operation. There were rules for using the gnomes mechanical diving bell, but I can't remember anything else like sea suits or underwater breathers.

It was Dungeon #77, Nov/Dec 1999. "To Walk beneath the Waves," by W. Jason Peck. Levels 3-5. Looking in the issue the device was called Drawmij's Undersea Apparatus. It provided 24 hours of underwater breathing with no AC benefit, and in fact could not be worn over armor heavier than chain. No movement penalties or hindrances.

You show your age...that was the adventure that came to mind for me as well. Really a very good, if smaller, adventure. My old group enjoyed it a great deal back in the day. Watch out for Pike.

That adventure really stood out in my memory, but I could not remember the issue or title. Thanks for the info. I will see if one of my friends has it, so I can borrow it and read it again.

Can you tell me how much the Drawmij's undersea apparatus cost? I seem to remember it being quite pricey, hence why the pc's in the adventure just borrowed the equipment. But I would like to give my group the opportunity to possibly purchase them if they want to.

Thanks again.

You could borrow, or you could own.

The cost was 10,000 gp. Pricey, but cheaper then a Helm of Underwater Action. I'd recommend getting a copy of the issue so you can read the full description.

Sorry about the format, I pasted it directly from a recordset.

Out of the ones on your list that I've actually played/DMed (cool list, BTW, thanks for the memories!!), Sunken Shadow and A Walk beneath the Waves really stood out for my group. But probably my favorite among those listed was Peer Amid the Water. That was really fun with interesting contridicatory details that flowed smoothly (no pun intended) and somehow managed to not come off as campy.
*sigh* what good times those were!
