I Want Smileys!

The Exchange

I think the title explains it pretty well. I want smileys. To convey emotion, show joviality in a serious worded text and just because I want it.
Wassup, Paizo!
Make it so.

Second that!
If there's one good thing to say about WotC it's that they have awesome smileys on their board!
Wanna have them here...

Liberty's Edge

No smileys! They scare me.

Don't be...they're more scared of you than you are of them. Most of them will just run away and are really only dangerous when cornered or if you surprise them.

Fie on the smileys. I'd like the text for the message board to support umlauts, falas, accents, and the like.

I can't type Motorhead, The Cruxshadows, or Motley Crue properly without my beloved umlaute!

Liberty's Edge

Smiley swarm! Aaaieeeee! Huh? having nightmare.
NO SMILEYS!!!

In my experience, emoticons inhibit communication by distracting people from writing what they mean.

For accents, just cut and paste from a web page or word processor.

I, for one, prefer the old-school ASCII smileys.

But they're out to get me. NO SMILEYS!

Lessee.... Umlauts..... Mötorhead. No, wait. Motörhead. That's better.

Smileys? Maybe. Perhaps. Unlikely. But if we ever do, they will NOT be animated. Animated smilies make me want to claw my eyes out.

This forum has contributors who take the time to actually say what they mean, being careful to avoid ambiguities. I treasure the quality of their astute efforts. None of that 'you know what I'm saying?' garbage that has slithered into and strangled the parlance of our times. No, I don't know what you're saying, you cerebral titan... I'm no telepath and you're not declarative.

You don't need a smirking animation from Sebastian to know he just put the wrecking ball to your argument. Or a happy-go-lucky idiot cartoon to let anyone know The Jade is given to tongue in cheek.

Add animated winking or angry smileys and it would be harder for me to take these boards as seriously. After smileys let's have circles instead of dots over every i and below ever ! and get stuck with an email signature of paizo&me2gether4ever.

Cuteness on a wargaming site is the devil.

I'm sorry I wasn't clearer earlier by trying to be a smart-ass, but I don't want animated or other smileys either, even though I use the old-fashioned kind ;)

Agreed. If it's going to happen, then ASCII all the way. Less of a lightshow that way.

Liberty's Edge

I'm just ascairt of them.
I inadvertantly ate a whole village of them, thinking they were skittles, and they've vowed revenge.
How was I to know they weren't skittles?!?
Leave me alone smiley's!
Aaaieeeee!

I'm no fan of graphical smilies. They're distracting, especially so with animated smilies, and are all too easily misused. In some cases they cause trouble; I once posted something like "My character (fighter12/weaponmaster8)", only to find that the '8)' has been converted into a "cool" smiley.

In my opinion, text smilies are enough to communicate a message. Just because every forum software and his dog provides graphical smilies, doesn't mean they're entirely necessary.

Liberty's Edge

I actually want smileys. There, I said it. Flog me.
I could use them to defray my wiseacre sarcasm. I'm only about half as verbally gifted as Jade and Sebastian, and only when I got at least 6 hours of sleep the night before.

No no. Hearts. Definitely has to be hearts, because they're so much better than circles.
