I have a question or two i hope some of you could help me with. I am currently located in Iraq...again. I am wanting to start a game in the little freetime i have and am not sleeping. Over the last four or five years i've had a number of groups very few of which have lasted to long for the obvious reasons of the military lifestyle. All the games i've had have started with the same Campaign setting.."The Sunless Citadel." But i am growing rather bored by it and i have also recently been reading alot about forgotten realms and am finding it alot more to my liking than Greyhawk. I was curious could anyone suggest a good way to get a hopefully *crosses fingers* long lasting game off on the right foot? Forgotten realms preferably if not it can be converted.

Well, for starters, allow me to give you a hearty Thank You! for what you are doing. Stay safe!
I'll give you two options, though both may require some work to find.
1) Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. It's a fun adventure. It'll take your group from around 5th level up through about 17 or so. There's quite a bit of "hack n slash" to it, but there's also some mystery solving, investigating, and so on. It's not FR, but it converts fairly easily.
2) City of the Spider Queen. This one is FR, and it's crazy fun. It's also quite a bit of hack n slash, though again - some investigating, puzzle solving, etc. This one starts around 10th level and takes you through to around 20th or 21st.
Those are the two from Wizards of the Coast I've played that I'll recommend.
If you don't mind third party stuff, Necromancer Games has a fun 3 parter called Rappan Athuk. This is almost pure hack n slash.
Finally, Wizards has a new one coming out really soon that was co-authored by Dungeon's own James Jacobs called The Red Hand of Doom. I don't really know a whole lot about it, though. I'm guessing that at this stage of the game James should be able to give some basic information - such as levels ranges and that sort of thing.

I was also curious if anyone knew what is the best thing to use with a chessex battle mat but i dont know if minitures will work? Anyone have experience with this?

I use Chessex battlemats, with wet-erase markers, miniatures and/or counters. A set of kid's washable/water-soluble colour pens also works great. Was that what you meant? I'm not quite clear on what info you're after here, regarding the mat :).
You might also want to take a look at Paizo's own Shackled City adventure path hardcover, if you can get a copy offline. It runs from 1st to 20th. Most stuff from Necromancer games is also good - "Crucible of Freya" is a great starter adventure that has lots of potential to become a longer-term area (plenty of good hooks and adventure development). "Rappan Athuk" is also good, but I wouldn't take a party of lower than about 6th level in there - it's a real meat-grinder (but a damn fine adventure besides). Rappan Athuk is due a revised hardcover release around GenCon time this year, iirc.

I would think you could find any of those on eBay. I've heard, though, that Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil fetches some pretty high prices as a collector's item.
If eBay isn't available to you (not sure what you guys have access to over there), I'll have to ponder on some ideas.
As for the battlemat. You definitely want wet erase markers. Do not use dry erase markers - you'll never get it off. For markers, minis certainly work. If you don't have those, just about anything that fits in a 1 inch square will do. I've used chess pieces, pennies, shiny rocks, and so on.

Again thanks for the help. We have limited Internet access but for some reason the army hates ebay and blocks it. I truly want those nice pewter and painted mini's i had when i learned to play but those are hard to find online in unblocked pages. But for now i will continue to use what i have. Thank you very much for the information and help. Is there anything i can do in return for either of you?

Hi there!
Paizo.com ships over to Iraq and you can buy all the products discussed in this forum right here. Since you are already online talking here, you have everything you need to make an order. We have a large number of armed services customers overseas and have had no problems shipping. Good luck with your gaming!

DG110, I don't know what your unit's OPSEC guidelines say, so I won't ask you which FOB you're on... Stay safe, though. I'm fixin' to return for my second tour, and believe you me, I'm bringing a good bit of gaming stuff with me.
That said, you can't go wrong with the Shackled City Adventure Path. With all the playtesting notes and great discussion on Paizo.com, you should be able to make it a good campaign for your players. It's a mostly self-contained campaign, so you could drop it into the FRCS without any effort.
Green Ronin's Freeport Setting is pretty good and they recently released Freeport Trilogy, which combines the first three adventures into one product. These could be dropped into the FR without any effort as well.

You could also get Dungeon # 130. It contains a short lvl 1 Forgotten Realms adventure set in the Dales (Featherdale). It is quite well done and is written with the idea of bringing a new group of players/characters in mind.
Exactly what you need to bring a new group together and introduce them to the rules (if need be). Since the adventure is quite short (looks like you could play it out in one or two sessoins, according to how much room you dedicate to actually role-play), it would also be quickly rewarding for new players who have quickly a feeling of having achieved something.
Good luck and take care.

I would recommend the Flipmat made by Steelsqwire...it's only $9 and you can mark on it with anything, including sharpies.
There was a humorous post a while back where someone mentioned using 5.56 ammo for goblins, .50 cal rds for barbarians and tabasco minis from MRE's for other various creatures.
Hey Paizo...how about another donation fund like you guys did for Katrina relief where your loyal customers and subscribers can donate funds to help defray shipping costs to any APO address in Iraq or Afghanistan?
Ditto on the major thank yous for you guys and gals in uniform...hopefully you will all be home safe soon.

Thank you all very very much for both your support and your information. BP my opsec prevent me from discussing to much but i can say im in northern area and this is my second tour i was actually with the 101st when we pushed in during the orginal offensive. This time around its alot less aggressive but then again that was a war *shrug*. Also BP i have a rather large collection of digital files that helped me out tremendously in the amount of weight i would have had to carry to bring all the books if you are interested and can provide me with an address i can mail you copies of the disks. I should be returning to Fort Campbell for two weeks very soon for my "mid-tour leave" and i'd be happy to help you out. If anyone else would like a copy let me know.
Bill your offer is very generous but i would like to offer something in return. I've heard alot about that campaign but i haven't managed to see it yet. But as requested my address is:
CPL Anthony Rush
HHC(MEDICS) 2/327th BN, 1 BCT, 101 ABN
OIF-4 (FOB WARRIOR)
APO AE 09335
All the information you have all provide should help alot if i can locate some players. Again thank you all.

Desert Gamer:
I will get this out to probably Tuesday.
Return to the temple of Elemental Evil is a combat-heavy adventure set in Greyhawk. A cult of Tharizdun is allying itself with evil elemental creatures, demons and other lovelies. I think the best part concerns a demon princess trapped in an altar. It has the feel of Gary Gygax's early works. The players should be afraid to touch anything.
It is about an inch thick. I am bad at guessing weight. I would say under a pound. It says it is for levels 4-14 so character should start low and come out high.
I don't have much Forgotten Realms stuff but I will send what is there. I know I have Hellgate Keep, a module that adapts the Waterdeep novel for play and a couple of sourcebooks "Waterdeep and the North" and "Empire of the Sands". That last might seem odd considering that you are in Iraq.
All the Forgotten Realms stuff is second edition.
In return, please keep yourself safe and take good care of everyone who comes under your care. Come home in good health and be proud of yourself and all your brothers and sisters in arms.

I was in Mosul the last time, and will likely return in the near future. From what I've heard from the guys that relieved us (and the ones that relieved them) it's been getting steadily better in the north. I've been telling our new soldiers I want to be absolutely bored when we go back. Better alive and bored, than dodging mortars et al.
I've been acquiring PDFs off RPGNow so that I don't have to have hard copies when I get in-country. I have a 250 gig hard drive to fill up after all :)
If you want to get in contact off-line, I can be reached at ephealy(at)ephealy(dot)com.

DesertGamer110:
The Post Office website said it could get to Iraq in 4-10 days or so. I wonder if that means it will get to YOU in anything near that time. Is there anything special that has to be done to send something to an overseas base?
Thanks for the offer of files etc. Just take care and come back in good condition.
