Animal Companions for a ranger druid

3.5/d20/OGL

I am about to start playing in a new campaign and wanted to get some opinions on animal companions for a ranger/druid

It says in the PHB that rangers have 1/2 their ranger level as an effective druid level for figuring animal companion stats, but they don't get animal companions until lvl 4. If I have a ranger 2/druid 2, would I figure my animal companion as a level 2 druid or a level 3 druid.

Interesting question.

I don't know if the levels and half-levels stack.

If there isn't an official word on this (I bet there is), personally I'd rule that the levels stack, even before 4th level Ranger.

I don't know where the reference is, but the levels do stack. Add 1/2 your ranger level to your druid level, in your case you get an animal companion for a 3rd level druid.

Just My Thoughts

Swiftbrook is correct to a point. The levels do stack, though since the ranger does not get the ability to choose an animal companion until 4th level his levels would be meaningless for the example given (read page 59 of the PHB to see what I'm talking about).
