Chaos Monks

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

The Chaos Monk from Issue #335 is a very nice variant, IMO. Kudos to Tim Hitchcock for his work on that.
Just had a few questions and was looking for some clarification.

1)I noticed that Slow Fall progression goes right from 40 to 60 feet. I've been assuming that that's a typo and the Chaos Monk should gain Slow Fall 50' at 10th level. Is that correct?

2)The 4th level Ki Strike gives no descriptor. I've been assuming magic. Correct?

3)Does the Chaos Monk lose things like Wholeness of Body and Diamond Body in favor of the Class Features listed in the table?

I've been assuming all these are accurate, but didn't want to short my Player :D
Thanks again Tim

Yep, that's either typo or Mike decided to change it.

Correct, that one's my typo.

Yep, that was the idea.

If you want to use the unofficial version I had included another ability called Babbling Touble in place of Tongue of Sun and Moon. (warning: this might have been pulled because its pretty potent.)

Babbling Tongue (Su): By 17th-level, the chaos monk’s thought process borders on complete lunacy. Three times per day he can spew forth a barrage of intense gibberish forcing all opponents within hearing range to make a Will save or become confused, as if under the effect of a confusion spell with a caster level equal to the chaos monk’s class level.

Take Care,
Tim

I know some people that can do this. Now I know how!

It's the Xaositect mages that scare me. ;-)

here's a question.... assuming that the whole deal with monks not being able to continue to advance in that class after multiclassing in another is due to the single minded aspect of the lawful outlook, would this then apply to the chaos monk? my own belief is that they would be able to continue advancing in the chaos monk class without restriction, but i could be wrong.

My guess is that its for game balance as well.

In which case, you could rule that a chaos monk requires a state of mind that is entirely unfocused and so intuned with chaos itself that he cannot possibly multi-class, because his art is the antithesis of concentration.

Your best bet would be to check with the DM however, as I found many DMs allow players with monks to multi-class anyway.

Here's a quick question. I was looking at this article because I'm creating a monk character and thought this looked really cool. I'm curious though. At 11th level, the chart lists "greater flailing" as a special ability, but the article never defines this. Should we assume this is like the monk's "greater flurry" ability, granting one extra attack at the full BAB, or is this ability a typo?

I'm puzzled by this too.

I'm pretty sure it's a typo. At 11th level the standard monk gets greater flurry (another extra attack), but the chaos monk's attacks increase according to the chart. I'm guessing that when the flailing strike was first concieved it lined up more with the standard monk's attack progression. Then with tweaking and balancing "greater flailing" was lost, but accidently left on the chart.
