Breath Weapon or Nasty Hiccup

3.5/d20/OGL

I was browsing the WotC website and read the article on variant Tarrasques. Interesting read but then I got to the part about the Five headed Pyro Hydra- Fearsome critter- lots of nasty bite attacks plus breath weapons. Pretty cool right?

Then I started looking at some of the stats- The Breath Weapon has a range of 30 feet. The Tarrasque is 50 feet tall. Maybe I'm thinking a little too 3-D here, but it seems to me that it's breath weapon would be good for getting rid of Belly Button lint, but not much else.

So the Crux of my question- What types of house rules have other people used to give range to breath attacks? Height multipliers? Ranges windows (a la missile weapons). Thanks in advance.

And in anticipation of someone flaming me for asking a dumb question, my premptive retort will be "Same to you."

Thanks

Not meaning to sound like countless teachers/instructors/professors, but there aren't any "dumb" questions. It's the perception of others that construe questions as "dumb" that is, well, dumb. ::smirk::

A tall critter with a short range attack (breath weapon, tall spikes, gaze attack, etc.) begs for logical explanation. Generally when the range of such attacks are far reaching, you can play the "magic" card to explain it. When the weapon falls short, I tend to play the physiology card.

Fifty feet tall? Thirty-foot range on a breath weapon? Nasty hiccup may very well be the case. Thinking back on some wild cast parties from my theatre days, thirty feet seems reasonable for a breath weapon that effectively is a creature emptying its stomach(s). In the case of something really big, there could be some interesting contents to sift through... Ew.

The only time I consider height multipliers is when the critter in question is flying, on much higher ground, or something similar. If the physical kinetic energy of the creature peters out, physics take over. I'm a big fan of parabolic curves at this point. I don't have hard fast rules for this, going on logic and making my abjudication clear to the players and allowing them to chime in.

The Exchange

Don't forget, a breath weapon can orginate from any square in the creature's space, so it may be dipping its head(s) low in order to catch all those puny creatures at its feet. Also a nice trick is to breath on yourself to eliminate grapplers or nasty Climbing pests ;) (Ah being immune to one's breath weapon has many advantages :))

I'm truly amused at this article, as I've been working on the concept of a Shadow or Half-Shadow dragon Tarrasque being worshipped as a deity by a group of apocalyptic (i.e. world-ending) cult of yuan-ti... campaign becomes a countdown to the beast waking up and, depending on the template, taking to the skies :D
