Half Ogre / Minotaur concerns

3.5/d20/OGL

Has anyone allowed the Half Minotaur/Ogre into their campaigns, from Dragon #313? The reason I'm asking, is they seem a bit under conned at +1 LA, and seem more suited to a +2.

Thoughts?

I haven't seen the stats for it yet, I'm a little behind schedule being over in Iraq, but I don't see why I wouldn't allow it. If you don't like something about it, then as a DM you can just alter it and make it suitable for your campaign. In the end it's all up to you to make it work.

Yes, the half-ogre and half-minotaur are extremely overpowered. The Half-ogre was also printed in races of destiny by wotc with a +2 LA and a race, not a template. Personally, I'd disallow both from my games.

Me I say if it's in both the Dragon magazine and in Races of Destiny, it would be up to the DM to decide if it's allowed and which one can be used. . the dm i play with is particular about if he allows anything from the dragon magazine especially since he limits which D&D books can be used

According to Dragon 313 the 1/2 ogre recieves a whopping +12 to strength if you apply the template to a medium creature. +4 from the template and +8 for the size adjustment according to table 4-2 in the monster manual. I believe the 1/2 minotuar gets a similar benefit. Looking for an explanation on this. +12 to strength for +1 level adjustment seems amazing.

Wow . . . that would make three different versions of half-ogres in 3rd edition? Because in my campaign we use the one detailed in Savage Species, which only has a +6 Str

I ran the Savage Species version (only a +1LA)in an after-hours trouble shooting game with two of the other DM's I play with. (only two people in our group are just players full time) I built him with barabarian levels at first (2) and then refined him into a fighter as he honed his skills. In regard to combat game mechanics this character was certainly powerful. I'd cringe if someone wanted to play one in my game, and maybe try to talk them out of it, but the major flaw in playing one of these brutes is the role-playing aspect. I took a lower Con and Dex than most front-liners would just to up Int and Cha for role-playing encounters where everyone is afraid or suspicious of such a thick-necked savage.

Don't know crud about half minos though.

don't know where you guys are getting your moddifiers from both give a +4 to strengh not 12, same as the goliath from races of stone, and when compared to the benifits of some of the +2 LA templates these guys are just fine at +1

According to wotc instructions we are to use the most recently print source as a correction. Using this approach we find race of destiny to be the winner. A half-ogre should have at least +8 strength bonus based on a large size. They are giant subtypes. A giant has a LA of +4 generally. It is then a decision to establish the LA for the half-ogre. I think the LA +2 of the minotaur confuses people here because the minotaur is definitely superior to the ogre. The same applies to the half versions.
