The Infinite levels of the Abyss

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

Wouldn't it be neato if there were a series of articles each seperately based around one full level of the abyss, detailing each aspect and attribute of that level? Man-o-man, I have been itching for that ever since I read the hollow Planar Handbook (I say hollow because it was missing any semblance of crunch relating to any of the planes it mentioned).

Does anybody have any ideas which levels would make great articles?

I've submitted a proposal for an adventure that details one. We'll see what happens. I would love to see more of this, too.

Several of the layers of the Abyss have seen treatment/mention through the years. I'd like to see all these various bits centralized in some manner to provide some consistancy. Okay, that's an oxymoron for the Abyss but... I'm sure 50+ layers have been named (at least) and have some sort of treatment about the environmental/demonic-tanar'ri conditions. Any independently wealthy gamers with nothing better to do with their time want to take on the project?

Rexx, check out Planes of Chaos. You can buy the PDF from various online stores. It's got a LOT of little tidbits about various layers of the Abyss. In the back, there is a section that looks like a collection of want-ads. Each "ad" gives a little bit about dozens of layers that don't see treatment anywhere else.

I'm currently waiting to hear back on some querries I sent to DRAGON and DUNGEON about one of the layers, and some of the denizens that inhabit them. I'm not sure how y'all operate, but when I submit querries, I tend to do a batch with a central theme. I guess, if I have my way, you'll see some Abyssal content in the upcoming issues of both magazines.

Steve, good luck with the adventure. Even if it doesn't get approved, I know I'd like to hear what your idea was.

In the long run, you're probably better off to add a little variety to any given query, for a simple reason. Taking your current topic as an example - if the editors have no desire to do anything related to the Abyss, you're out of luck.

Certainly, there's nothing wrong with having a few ideas in a query revolve around a theme. I've done, both successfully and unsuccessfully. But the more variety you have, the better chance you have for getting the covetted green light. ;)

That's one source that's in box somewhere in the storage unit (as much as I complain how hard Planescape was to run well I bought every release religiously). There's also a 1E Outer Planar book that touches upon some and a few Dragon issues pre-WotC/Paizo as well. I suspect a lot of layers make repeated appearances.

I think it would be an oustanding resource if someone had an Index of all the Layers mentioned and their various appearances throughout the years.

Thanks for the reminder, EP Healy. I'm really wondering where I can put the old D&D collection in this duplex I call home right now... Kitchens are so overrated, right? ::wink::

I thought that was the case, based on reading all the threads on the topic here. Two things keep me from mixing a large number of unrelated querries into one large motley group. I tend to exhaust a subject for ideas before moving on, and I'm trigger happy. :) Once I get the querries on a topic set in stone, I want to get them out the door before I obsess about them any more.

Planewalker.com is your friend. They have A LOT of info on the layers floating around in their skulls (and site).

I hate to be a tease, but I've actually started compiling just such a list. I started a few years back, but burned out after a while. If my query gets accepted, I might get bit by the Abyssal Bug again, and get around to completing it.

Oh, and kitchens are overrated. You can eat anywhere!
