Just how many clerics of Pelor were killed in the "tragic accident"?

Shackled City Adventure Path

A player of mine has decided to play a young cleric of Pelor in our campaign, serving under the struggling Kristof Jurgensen . I will start Lifes Bazzare soon but first I have a minor problem to sort out.

While looking through the hardcovers chapters we noticed that the local shrine of Pelor had an accident months ago, last spring the roof colapsed and the highest ranking clerics of Pelor were killed, leaving poor Kristof Jurgensen all alone paranoid and distraught.

Problem is sometimes the information in the book says three clerics were killed (the timeline on p13 and on p24 under the shrines description), and sometimes in later chapters(p95 in Flood Season), it says that only two clerics were killed, so which is it? Two or Three dead?

My player and I need to know so we can write appropriate background material before we kick-off the campaign.

Also what where the deceased clerics of Pelor called? How old/what race were they etc?

I would try and come up with something that makes both sound like they are right. So maybe say that only two HIGH level clerics of Pelor died, yet there was another low level cleric who died in the accident as well. So three priests DID die... and only two high level clerics were killed.

I noticed the same thing. It's one of those minor errors that slipped in during editing I suppose. The magazines allways mentioned only two clerics. I went with that number. After all, it's only a shrine (although, again, the HC does use the word church a couple of times). On the other hand, I like Sean's solution too.
Another conflict is that the timeline mentiones that Embril killed the two clerics and plane shifted the boddies to an unknown place. Kind of strange if they where killed in their own shrine under a collapsed roof eh? It does deprive the pc's of the chance to question the clerics as to the cause of their death.

The name and race of the two (or three) killed priests weren't mentioned anywhere in the HC.

One of my own PC's also plays a cleric of pelor. She was sent to Cauldron to replace the recently killed priests. Although she was only a novice, It was all the Church of Pelor could manage on such a short notice. Kristoff was made high-priest until a suitable replacement could be found.

The conflict between Embril and the shrine of Pelor goes back a long time. The site is a place of ancient power. In fact, it is on that same spot, many miles below Cauldron, that the cagewrights eventually constructed the tree of shackled Souls. The shrine of Pelor is merely the last in a line of many shrines that where constructed in that spot. Before, it was a holy place to Moradin the Soul forger, and before that, Nerull the Reaper.

Embril has long plotted to drive the shrine of Pelor from that spot, so that she could claim it for herself (and the cagewrights, of course). It was through this plotting that the previous high priest of Pelor became aware of Embril’s connection to the cagewrights, although he had not yet informed her superiors in Sasserine, nor his lover and fellow high-Priestess. Embril decided to strike quickly, before her membership of the cagewrights became more widely known. She magically weakened the roof right above the high-priest’s bedchamber, and collapsed it when they where both in bed.
Kristoff had to burry her two superiors on her own, although she did get some help from the Sacrem Delasharn of st. Cuthbert.

Thank you so very much for the replies, but I'm still a little confused? (brand new to this DM stuff) In the hardcover Kristoff is a young man, not a woman, is this a change that was made from the old magazine version of the Adventure Path?

I think I will keep Kristoff a male because I already have a miniature to suit him. :)

Yes, in some sections of the book it says that the roof collapsed on the two clerics and killed them, did Embril weaken the roof with her magic and planeshift the dead away or were the dead buried/cremated in the official version? This is important because of the speak to dead cleric spell which is only third level to cast.

Kristoff is forth level at the start of Lifes Bazzare and could possibly speak to the two dead clerics (once he levels up to 5th) (if he bacame paranoid and crazy enough) are their stats for him anywhere?

Where are Cauldrons dead buried, I know most are burnt by the temple of Wee Jas but is there a graveyard somewhere?

How come there are these mistakes in the hardcover is it important or should I just decide which way would be best for my campaign? What are the correct/official versions of these events?

Does anyone know where I can find a map of a small temple to use as the shrine of Pelor?

This will be the first time I have ran a game of D&D and I really want the other older and more experienced players in the group to have a good time and be blown away by my game.

I dont want to ask the people in my group for advice because I want to keep the Shacked City secrets to myself for now. I only want them to know what their characters should know.

My brother said that Shackeled City is supposed to be a very difficult game and that characters die very often, would you recomend that I have them create two characters (with backgrounds pre-written) just in case their first choice dies?

Officially, Kristof is male. The roof collapse/Embril murder and plane shift was a change between the magazine and the hardcover to make more connections than already existed.

No real stats for Kristof exist; I recommend using the Human Cleric from the DMG.

Cauldron does not have a graveyard; there is a mausoleum underneat the temple of Wee Jas for those that can afford it, but most people are burnt (and I assume their ashes are thrown in the central lake).

Mistakes are always made, its the way of life. Consider it a challenge; the correct version is always the one you want to use.

You can find a map of the Shrine of Pelor (and St. Cuthbert, Kord and Wee Jas) at the SCAPResources page at http://scapresources.envisable.com.

Shackled City can be difficult at time. But in my experience the deaths don't happen often enough that a second character would be needed that quickly.

Other people have posted corrections for you, but something to keep in mind: The Church of Pelor is a small player in this and not central to the plot outline. They don't even affect the plot outline. You can pretty much do whatever you want with them.
