Old Campaign Settings - Spelljammer

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

Scarab Sages

To those at Dragon,

Since you apparently didn't notice the "Thank you" thread that I started, I figured I would try a new one, with a new name, and see if that got your attention.

In this latest issue of Dragon I saw hints (in a letter response) that Spelljammer would be covered in a (near) future issue. Will this be the Campaign Classics Theme for Janauary that Eric mentioned in his opening dialogue? If so, could you give any hints about some of the stuff you might cover. The only thing that was specifically mentioned were the giff. While I like the race, and look forward to seeing them converted to 3.5 rules, I wonder what else you might include. Monsters? Ships? Movement and Combat rules for space (both ship and PC)? Maybe a "big picutre" look at the setting as it currently stands? If I remember correctly, they cut the campaign right about the time of the 2nd Unhuman War, when the Scro attacked.

Anyway, here's hoping that this thread isn't ignored like the last one was. If it is though, what the hell.

You may want to check out Hackjammer from Kenzer. I think they acquired the right to use the rules for first edition D&D (now Hackmaster), and Hackjammer uses a lot of the original Spelljammer rules and concepts.

No need! Mwahahahaha....If you wander over the the triple thank you thread, you will see some confirmation that they are going to do a revisit right here in Dragon. Joy!

Spelljammer received some 3E treatment in the Polyhedron section of a Dungeon issue back in the #90's. I'm sure you know but others might not.

Actually, no I did not know. I've only been collecting gaming magazines sice around Dungeon 100 (the Githyank invasion). Thanks for the info. I'll have to try and find that issue.

erik mona hinted in another thread that he wants to bring back the giff. ;)

Yeah, that was one of t the things mentioned in the last Dragon, in response to someone's letter. As long as the talk about the Giff Firearms, I'm cool.

Great to hear, SJ was definitely among my favorite settings. It is probably at the top of the list or sitting beside Planescape, and slightly ahead of Dark Sun.

Oh, in that case Aberzombie, I'll dig for the issue #. It appeared during that era that Dungeon-Polyhedron was revisiting most of the old TSR games/settings and giving d20 conversions of them. Some of the critters received treatment, as well as most of the big Spelljamming "factions" (Elven Armada, Scro, etc). Critters too (don't remember if the giff were updated).

Thanks Rexx, I appreciate it. I'll keep a watch on this thread.

I haven't delved into the storage unit yet. I'll get that issue number, I swear! Have you seen the neogi treatment in the Aberrations book? It's nice to see a mindspider wreck in art once again.

Dark Archive

Hey, Aberzombie,

It's in issue 92. That would be the real issue 92, not the issue 94 that was numbered as 92.

Dark Archive

By the way, if you like Githyanki, you'll really like that issue. It also has "The Interlopers of Ruun-Khazai." This is a totally cool Githyanki adventure that killed one of the most powerful players I've ever DM'd.

Thanks Kikai13. I forgot about the "ooops" on the numbering as well.

Absolutely! I think my favorite part of the Neogi chapter was the picture of the Great Old Master with the young Neogi eating their way out of him. And while I did love seeing the mini adventure with the wrecked Mindspider, I would much rather see a flying Mindspider. Hey Dungeon People, are you listening?

Scarab Sages

I've been meaning to ask, does anybody have any old Spelljammer stuff in electronic form? Specifically, I'm looking for a picture of the Rock of Bral. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

For anyone looking for updated Spelljammer stuff, you could try Spelljammer.org. I don't know if it's supported by WotC, but it's got a lot of updated material done by fans, as well as info showing deckplans for old and even new ships. Check it out.
