Changing of the Guard

Congratulations to Erik Mona for his new position as Editor-in-Chief of Dragon Magazine. I am certain he will be perfect for the job.

However, I can't help but wonder... four editors in two years is a very rapid turnover. What has changed at WotC that makes Dragon editors so willing to depart? The wholecloth dismissal of talent at WotC two and three years ago would seem to me a hint that it is NOT the most stable of posts.

WotC no longer has any bearing on Dragon; the magazine is published by Paizo, which is a completely independent company.

Paizo is its own independent company, yes. The rest is untrue.

Wizards of the Coast has as much control over Dragon as it did when the magazine was published in-house. Wizards of the Coast still owns Dragon; Paizo publishes Dragon as a licensee. There's a lot of interaction between the companies to make sure that Dragon remains 100% official D&D.

{shrug} This I don't know. It's probably due at least in part to wanting to work at the very genesis of D&D creation. Let's face it, all of the designers, developers, and editors at Wizards of the Coast play (or have played) D&D, and they love the game. There's also a slower pace for designers than for Editors-in-Chief of a monthly magazine, which I think probably appealed to Jesse, Chris, and Matt (although I can't speak for them, of course). Finally, it seems to me as somewhat of a spectator to this Paizo-to-Wizards movement that Wizards of the Coast sees the Editor-in-Chief position as a bit of a training ground. I could be wrong about that, but like I said, it's speculation. :)
