Yeah, me too. Saw the second half tonight, after forgetting to Tivo it on Wednesday (Tivo'd the opener, but forgot to get the season pass). It's on the season pass list now. I know from Alias that there are times when I'm gonna be disappointed in the eventual resolution (or lack thereof, in some cases) of a J.J. Ambrams mystery plot, but man, he knows how to control the flow of information to the viewer just perfectly. Good suspense at just about every commercial break, wonderful tension, and good surprises already. I was completley wrong on who the criminal was (avoiding spoilers as much as possible), and I love the idea of gradually revealing the mystery through repeating the crash scene from different points of view.

My worry was that they're going to run out of interest. I mean, you can only explore the castaways on Gilligan's Island so long before you have to send in the Harlem Globetrotters.
But indications are that he's holding back a lot of good stuff. I'm looking forward to Wednesday nights a lot now!

The more I see it, the more I like it. I love how we get backstory handed out a little at a time, almost on a "need to know" basis, and I like how we gradually get to know the characters.
I enjoy that there's a driving puzzlelike aspect to the storyline that challenges you to figure things out, allowing the screenwriters to manipulate and subvert your expectations.
I like that Mr. Locke (Terry O'Quinn) has recognized that his past and his future don't need to be the same thing, that he has taken the opportunity to reinvent himself, and that he challenges others to do the same.
I'm stunned that Evangeline Lilly (Kate) hasn't really been in anything before. She's good!

Does anyone have any theories yet?
One that others have come up with is that the island is alive and manifesting their thoughts and/or fears. Possible spoiler coming up here...
Hmmm ... interesting theory. So would that perhaps make it a modern-day version of Forbidden Planet, where in essence they're fighting "creatures of the id"?

Patrick Weekes |

Hey, Forbidden Planet was based on "The Tempest", yes? I could see Abrams doing a modern-day interpretation complete with some new spins on Ariel and Caliban, and a mad scientist or magician who caused the plane crash in order to take revenge upon one of the passengers for a wrong done unto him years ago...
And, of course, the hot naive daughter who, knowing Abrams, turns out to be a military-grade sniper specialist and taijitsu expert.
Of course, I personally am getting increasingly hypothetical, since my brilliant local ABC affiliate decided to do a last-minute tweak to the schedule, and my Tivo faithfully recorded the appropriate time and day for Lost, only to give me "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy". Stupid presidential debates...

That episode and this week's episode are both rerunning this Saturday night, at least in some markets.

For you timeshifters out there, ABC has taken a cue from NBC and will be implementing nonstandard running times for several of their series, including Lost, which will now run one minute into the next timeslot.
This trend would probably really annoy me if I didn't own a couple of dual-tuner TiVos.
(TiVo owners will find that upcoming Lost episodes are already scheduled for 61 minutes, so unless that causes confilcts for programs in the following hour, you're already set.)

I barely watch any TV anymore, but after hearing Vic rave about Lost for the past couple of weeks, I decided to try to catch the rebroadcast of episodes one and two last night. I am hooked! Granted, I was watching while baking brownies, stuffing Christmas cards into envelopes, and a number of other things, so I missed a several chunks of the story here and there, but wow, it's a captivating show.

One of the players in my group is the cousin of Maggie Grace, the girl who plays Shannon. She's visited with Maggie a few times at family gatherings and stuff since the show premiered, but she (Maggie) is being all tight-lipped on what happens on the show so we don't get any inside info...
I really like this show. It's the only show besides Enterprise that I watch regularly. Well, outside of the cable music channels and Comedy Central that is.

Ultradan |

Boy! They better have a mighty good exlpenation about what's going on or I'm going to be very pissed (can I say pissed on these boards?)!
I'm still hooked though.
Does anybody have any ideas on what happens if the timer reaches zero? We saw something starting to happen but the timer was quickly re-initiated before we could see what happens.

You remember that weird news item from when Sept 11th 2001 happened and there was this thing you could do with Word on the PC where if you typed in 9-11-2001 or something and then changed the type font to 'zig zag' or some other crazy font the stuff you typed looked like a plane crashing into the twin towers? That's what it looked like to me.
Where has Desmond been all this time? brutha!

Last nights episode kind of pissed me off.
What the heck was up with Locke?
And the Smoke Monster?
Finally lets talk about the "other" little village.
Either way, each episode seems to bring up more questions than it answers. I like the show, but sometimes it gest frustrating. Not to mention that the new timeslot is a killer.

I agree with everything you said... (I asked myself the same exact question about the smoke monster when the events transpired...)

I actually enjoyed last night's episode quite a bit, although my wife would agree with you guys about it being frustrating. I prefer Locke to be mysterious and a little bit dangerous, like in the first season. I also like anything to do with the smoke monster, and I thought it was kinda cool with what happened at the fence and all. I have a feeling that they are turning Locke into a major bad guy, and I am digging it all the way. He is by far my favorite character in the show.

I like Locke as well, but would rather see him remain a good guy. Oh well, we'll just have to see. My own favorite characters are Locke, Sayid, Hurley, and Desmond.

I like Claire... Just because she's so damn cute!
I dig Hurley... Because he's a blast (funny)!I like Sun... Because pretty isn't a big enough word for her!
I like Locke... Because he's cool!
I like Jin... Because he's so tough!
I like Said... Because he's a great guy to have around!
I liked Mr. Eko... Because he scared the hell out of me!
I like Desmond... Because he's mysterious!
I like Kate... Because she's so bad!
I like Sawyer... Because of his nicknames!
I like the Doc... Well, I just like him, that's all.
I like Charlie... Because he used to be a hobbit!
I hated Anna-Lucia... Because I just can't tolerate women that are angry for no good reason.
I even like good old Rose... And I think we don't see enough of her.
Not much I don't like about the show... It manages to keep me wanting more everytime it ends.

I love this show and will watch it till the wheels fall off. But, I wish they would've done what Kate just said in a throwaway line, "Should we just open fire?"
There are too many people on this island(s). I was so happy a couple weeks ago when the newest couple went away. (trying to do this spoiler-free)...

YeuxAndI wrote:I really really REALLY hope that they aren't all dead.I believe that's one theory that the producers have publicly stated is incorrect.
From the 'discredited theories' section of the Lost page at Wikipedia:
--= =--
At the heart of the series is a complex and cryptic storyline which spawns numerous unresolved questions.[45] Encouraged by Lost's writers and stars, who often interact with fans online, viewers and TV critics alike have taken to widespread theorization in an attempt to unravel the mysteries. Theories mainly concern the nature of the island, the origins of the "monster" and the "Others," the meaning of the numbers, and the reasons for both the crash and the survival of some passengers.
Several of the more common fan theories have been discussed and rejected by the show's creators, the most common being that the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 are dead or in purgatory. This was specifically denied by J.J. Abrams and was also proven to be wrong by the second season's finale.[46] Damon Lindelof also discredited the theory that the survivors will experience, or have experienced time travel,[47] although has since allowed for the possibility in regards to Desmond Hume.[48] Furthermore, Lindelof has rejected speculation that spaceships or aliens influence the events on the island, or that everything seen is a fictional reality taking place in someone's mind.[47][49]
Carlton Cuse dismissed the theory that the island is a reality TV show and the castaways unwitting housemates[50] and Damon Lindelof, many times, discredited the theory that the "monster" is a nanobot cloud similar to the one featured in Michael Crichton's novel Prey.[51][52]

The Jade |

The first week it aired I assumed they were in limbo. Seemed obvious and it explained everything. I told everyone I could get to listen to me. Stephen King then came up with the same theory and wrote it in his editorial in the back of Entertainment Magazine. Then of course the show said, "Naw, that's not it."
Now what I think is that the writing for the Lost soap opera metaphysica is a fluid beast. It adapts in reaction to what fans think is going to happen. One inside scoop during the first year had the unlikely element of Nazi involvement. Once that got out to the mainstream via Howard Stern the show said, "Naw, that's not it."
Being that the story doesn't go anywhere quickly or cleanly I think, much like the X-files writing, is that they don't actually have a clear endgame in mind. The difference is that with Lost, fans care to speculate en masse over each little detail. So perhaps the storyline for the show finds itself by always engaging these theories at first, doing a little dance, then darting away from them. A bit of a con that we trust will actually go somewhere, someday.
One new (so far as I know) and not too sensible theory by yours truly:
Have you noticed how often Jack's dead father is involved with so many of these characters before they came to the island? The one story element that hasn't been busted wide open is why he's the character with the most involvement. One of the Others said that bug eyes wasn't the top guy. Hmm. That would be odd, if Jack's deceased alcoholic surgeon dad had something to do with them. He is on the island after all. I can't see why he would, or could, but then the father/son fantasy story core is a tried and true (and cliched beyond measure) device.

drunken_nomad |

THIS is the kind of crazy, seat-of-the-pants, I can't wait till next week, type of stuff that I have sorely missed for those first 6 weeks of the season. That was a loooong haul and I hope we don't have to go thru something as uninspired as that ever again. When Locke took matters into his own hand a few weeks ago, that shifted the show back into a forward gear and it is gaining speed with apparently no brakes at all.
...man, I HATE the others.

![]() |

I really really REALLY hope that they aren't all dead.
Personally, I like to believe that, while that's not the answer for Lost, it is the answer for the last episode of Seinfeld. I choose to believe that they all actually did die in the plane crash, and the subsequent trial and prison sentence is merely the regulars getting their judgement and final comeuppance in the afterlife.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled... Lostness.
