Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Hey everyone! If you're going to be in the Austin area this weekend, you should check out the Dragon's Lair Pathfinder Ultimate Game Day!

WHAT: Wall-to-wall gaming, with as many players and GMs as we can pack into the space, plus free door prizes and giveaways
WHEN: 6:00 pm on Saturday night through 5:00 am on Sunday morning
WHERE: Dragon's Lair Comics and Fantasy on Burnet road, across from Lamar Middle School and south of HWY 183
WHY: It's free to play, and did I mention free giveaways?

Bring a sleeping bag and we'll supply the coffee!

We've got pregenerated characters, scenarios and maps all ready to go. Just bring your luckiest set of dice and get ready to game!

One of the super awesome prizes you'll get a chance to win if you make it all the way through the second slot is the new hardcover Rise of the Runelords collection, signed by like half of Paizo. Seriously, I think the only reason there aren't more signatures on it is because the book didn't have enough blank space in it for everyone.

BE THERE OR BE SQUARE

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

I think I'll start pulling prize support today. What fun!

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Woohoo! Now I have more minions I can command I MEAN helpful people who I can use to trick Paizo into giving us things I MEAN awesome volunteer organizers!

Dragon's Lair salutes you, Kristina! You are an awesome lady and we love your presence at our Mondays!

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

We're theoretically working on plans for a central website where we can organize all this nonsense so it's easier to navigate in the future, haha. Also the North Austin PFS (the aforementioned VC's group) will likely come back to Dragon's Lair in February when we move to a larger store location and get our Saturday gaming back.

Here's the Warhorn for the Dragon's Lair PFS if anyone still needs the link: http://warhorn.net/dragons-lair-pfs/schedule/day.php

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

UPDATE: This event just got 100% more awesome! We have bumped this back to Saturday night and will be gaming ALL NIGHT LONG! You'll get to take over the store for real as we lock the doors and settle in for NOTHING BUT PATHFINDER 'TILL DAWN! Holy crap I'm so excited

Texan Pathfinders, it's that time again! Dragon's Lair Comics and Fantasy in Austin ran its first Pathfinder Ultimate Game Day in September, and we had so much fun we decided to make it QUARTERLY.

The next Game Day is scheduled for Saturday, December 1st!

WHAT: Wall to wall gaming, Society sanctioned games, and FREE STUFF
WHEN: Sunday, December 2nd at 11 am
WHERE: Dragon's Lair Austin, at 6111 Burnet Road, just south of 183 and across the street from Lamar Middle School

This time, the sessions will be longer, the prizes will be more epic, and the paperwork will be a whole HECK of a lot better organized! We're once again packing the store from wall to wall with nothing but nonstop gaming and RPG giveaways. We'll also have a beginner's table and a kid's table for those new to the game and anyone bringing little ones along!

This Game Day's theme is Winter and Ice, so dress up in your favorite fur cloaks for extra gamer cred and make sure your PCs pack cold-weather gear!

We will be holding a special charity aspect of the event: bring in a giant stack of nonperishable food items, and throughout the day you can turn in a can (or box) of food at any time to get a free reroll at the gaming table! All food donated will go straight to local food banks, just in time for the holidays. The last charity event we ran at the store collected over 200 meals! I bet we can top it, unless you guys think you're not as awesome as the Magic:the Gathering kids... (oh snap, I went there)

Also, I NEED GM'S! If you think this event sounds awesome but you've already played every scenario ever written, or you just really love mimicking the feral cries of various magical beasts and aberrations, I WANT YOUR HELP TO MAKE THIS EVENT AWESOME! Email me at erin@dlair.net to snag a slot, or just sign up on Warhorn.

Our Warhorn site for this event is here

Game on, Texas!

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Awesome! We'll probably be contacting you as we get closer to December. Thanks!

One other recommendation..

Use the session sheets you can download from the event you added on the Paizo site. They have the Event number on them and the GMs can reference those for the Event ID and Number.

Our paperwork organization was one of the problem areas we're extremely focused on correcting. And this is an excellent piece of information. I shall take it to squirrel it away in my stash of useful things.

Why must I be out on mission every time this comes up? :(

Well, we're planning on doing it quarterly from here on out. Give it a couple more game days; if it keeps happening, I'd maybe go to a church or something and ask what you did to make someone cranky. XD

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Dragnmoon, your advice is already in the works of our grand Events machine. We'd actually never run Season 4 scenarios at the store before, and had no idea what to expect! We were expecting similar lengths to what we're used to from Season 3 and were totally surprised.

It's funny you mention extended hours--normally we close at 7 on Sundays XD

That said, we are indeed planning next time to do two five-hour slots instead of three four-hours. We might even do six-hour slots, especially since there will be quite a few more Season 4 scenarios available for next time (a lot of people were disappointed that we only had the four). I think three slots were a bit much for most of our attendees, though there were still four tables going strong in the last slot. But that will give us a little more room to breathe, hopefully.

And next time we'll have a little better idea of what we're actually doing, and hopefully things will be more organized, lol. This was very much a test run for us; we learned a lot and will be incorporating everything we learned as much as possible. If anyone has any advice for us, fire away! God knows no one ever got anything done by waiting until they knew what they were doing to dive into things.

And I have finished reporting everything but one table, for which I still need to hear back from a GM on a recording clarification point. Which one are you missing? I might have reported it wrong. Sadly I have not yet earned enough prestige points to purchase infallibility...

Speaking of which, Dragon's Lair Society members earned over 200 prestige points in a 48-hour period last weekend. HIGH FIVES

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Game Day was freaking amazing. Between everyone who participated, we earned almost 200 prestige in a single day.

Everybody ready to do it again?

Management wants another one on December 2nd. Get your dice ready!

Really looking forward to it. The folks at Dragon's Lair Austin, and thequickhoof in particular, are absolutely awesome.

D'awwwwwww. *blush*

In other news, we now have a Warhorn page for the event (actually we've had it for a while but I've been out in the middle of nowhere with no internet and couldn't post it):

http://warhorn.net/DragonslairAustin/schedule/day.php?date=2012-09-23

Spread the word! Signing up on Warhorn will guarantee your spot at the table, but we'll very likely be able to take plenty of walk-ins as well.

I am going to note, I hope you make it clear to participants that Rise of the Runelords Pt. I & Skull and Shackles Pt. I do not give PFS credit/chronicles. I do think it's awesome you're offering them and can only imagine the potential for those tables to organize into a regular game day to finish said adventure paths, I would just hate for people to sign up for them and/or play though them and find out the characters don't translate to PFS at all.

We're planning on it, yes. Announcements before the start of the session, signs at the table, notices on the website. We're really looking forward to running them--partly because we still want people to have an opportunity for fun even if they're not interested in PFS play--but you're absolutely right that it would totally be lame to play for ten hours and not get PFS credit when you thought you were going to.

I have added you to my list! Hooray :D

Augh, I am type-fail. My bad. It's on the 23rd, I must have hit the wrong button. Sorry guys.

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Dragon's Lair Comics and Fantasy is planning an Ultimate Game Day this September 22nd. We're running thirteen tables over three time slots, mostly PFS modules and scenarios, but a couple of other modules just for fun. Characters of nearly any level will be able to find a table (unless you're above 20 or so, in which case maybe not, haha).

WHEN: September 22nd, 10am to Midnight
WHAT: Thirteen tables and fourteen hours of solid back-to-back gaming, random door prizes, PFS credit, modules, specials, and sessions geared towards everyone from total beginners to veteran players. There will also be a consolation prize for whoever rolls the most nat-1's during the course of the day.
WHERE: Dragon's Lair Comics and Fantasy at 6111 Burnet Road, south of 183 and right across from Lamar Middle School.
WHY: Because it's going to freaking sweet, that's why.

ALSO, I NEED GMS. If you're in the Austin area and can stop by on the 23rd for even just one four-hour time slot (10am-2pm, 3pm-7pm, or 8pm-Midnight), send me your email address. All GMs get bonus prizes for helping out, including coupons for store merchandise, among other things. If you're already involved in the Dragon's Lair Pathfinder Society group, this event will also count towards your GMing credit (if you GM twice in a thirty day period at the Lair, you get a 10% discount on Pathfinder supplies). If you GM for more than one slot, you'll get better prizes!

We have a Warhorn page for the event here: http://warhorn.net/DragonslairAustin/schedule/day.php?date=2012-09-23

Email me at erin@dlair.net for questions, or message me here. You can also come in to the store and check things out.

We're planning on growing this into a full-scale convention in the future, so help me prove how awesome Pathfinder's following in Austin is!

You guys are moving again?!? I live in San Antonio, but I've been frequenting the Lair since it was in the old house off Guadalupe.

Where to this time?

Can't say just yet. It's not too far away, though, and the space is quite a bit larger. Yay more room for tables! But we will be officially announcing it at our 26th anniversary party over the weekend of the 22nd.

Which coincidentally, is the weekend we're doing our Pathfinder Ultimate Game Day, for which I still need GMs, hint hint. *coughfreeprizesforallmyGMscough* We're running thirteen tables for three time slots; it's going to be huge and insane and roughly 85% PFS legal (we're running a couple of non-PFS modules just for fun). Email me or message me here with your email address if you want in on the GM squad. There'll be random door prizes for players, too.

Dragnmoon wrote:

There is a very Good reason for Dragon's Lair Comics to Move.

I don't know the full story but they have been limited in parking so have had to severely control when they have Org Play in the Store.

As an Example the PFS game that used to play there one Saturday of the month had to leave because of this, and since then they have not had a Home but have been floating from store to store.

I would love if Dragon's Lair in Austin moved to another location that did not limit them on their parking.

Parking is definitely a factor in the move. Angie (the store manager) has been over to the new place and come back swooning over how much parking space is available. Also, we'll be able to bring back Saturday gaming. Woohoo!

My flgs (Dragon's Lair in Austin)wound up receiving only a brick of huge boosters, and nothing else, and seemed less than pleased.
I shop there, and I can say right now this displeases me a great deal. I had intended to go and buy 2-3 regular boosters and 1-2 Huge boosters...and now, based on what I'm reading here, this means I'll need to go elsewhere for regular boosters.

As someone who works at the Austin Lair, let me say: the rumors of our shortage have been greatly exaggerated :) I'm looking over at the shelf and I'm seeing probably 8 or 10 of the regular boosters right this moment.

We have both sizes in stock for now, and while we did receive fewer than we were hoping for, we are expecting more to be coming soon.

By the way, if you're ever after something that we ran out of, tell us and we'll special order it for you. We don't charge extra for special orders, you don't pay till you pick it up, and that way you won't have to pay shipping like you would getting it online. We can do that for anything currently in print or production, including minis. Neat, eh?

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

You'll need the page with one column asking for names and character numbers opposite the OGL in order to report your event; it's for the event coordinator's records, so that you can tell Paizo who was at each table, playing which character, and how much prestige they earned, so they get credit for the event.

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Yay for Dave! You've been an incredible help at the Dragon's Lair Society events, and we're psyched to have you!

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

I don't know if this might help a bit, but I run a Society game at my store, and we've been using Meetup to plan our meetings instead of Warhorn. It has an automatic wait-list system, so people who sign up after the event is full still get on the list, and I can tell those people to show up even if it looks full because we always have no-shows.

It also helps that there's actually a pretty massive gamer community on Meetup from which to recruit new players, if you use the right interest tags for your Meetup group.

Do you have a local game store you can put up postings at? GMs for our store get a discount on their Pathfinder supplies, which has been an awesome incentive if you can swing anything like that.

Most of the time, though, it's just a matter of getting them to GM ONE game. After their first game they'll often want to keep GMing forever, lol.

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Awesome. I'll let him know--he hasn't been using it in combat, only to scout. Thanks!

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

A player at our regular event posed this question, and I was wondering if there's an official ruling (I have not been able to find one). He's playing a summoner, and he also has a trained animal that he travels with (a hawk, which he purchased legally and uses Handle Animal to control). I know that normally a PC isn't allowed to have more than one animal, animal companion, mount, etc traveling with them, but I was wondering if it's legal to have both an eidolon and a trained animal, since the eidolon is a class feature, not a cohort in the usual sense.

Thoughts?

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Ah, cool. I've been really enjoying just GMing for the store, honestly, and I'm busy enough the rest of the time that like I say, I'll probably never get to actually play at my own PFS events. The chronicles don't expire, do they, haha?

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Any particular reason for that personal rule? I'm relatively new to this, only have three tables under my belt, and I've been devouring all the FAQ, info, and etiquette I can find XD

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Ledford the Barbarian is racking up an impressive kill streak at my store. We're going to put up a wall of honor chronicling the brave adventurers who've fallen to his axe.

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

I mostly ask out of plain curiosity, because it will likely be a very long time before I get a chance to play again (I'm GMing as a store employee), so I've got a stack of GM-credit chronicle sheets building up that I'll probably never use.

So you guys that have been running tables for years and have dozens of tables' worth of GM credit, do you actually use it all on your own characters, or do you just let it pile up in your closet, lol?

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

To be honest it sounds like your players, especially after the number of scenarios you're describing, just aren't interested in playing the same style of game you are. The whole "multiple choice" thing can be a valid mode of play--IF the GM is willing. Sounds like a party/GM communication problem to me. Some parties just want a straightforward dungeon crawl with little to no tactical thinking, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Pathfinder Society doesn't have a "right" or "wrong" way of doing things.

Maybe it's time for the GM and party to take a break from each other and try out some other gaming partners?

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Chris, I think the animate dead argument is more relevant to the "no cohorts" ban than the "no spell effects past end of scenario" ban, actually. But I'm very new to PFS, so I'm probably on drugs or something XD

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

The rule seems to be in place primarily to prevent permanent buffing on PCs--stuff like boosting your stats or getting a permanent fly spell or something like that. Casting spells on items in order to use those items for an external purpose (especially one as mundane as lighting an area) would therefore seem to be allowable. After all, you're allowed to enchant weaponry and armor.

As for damage and healing, the effects of such spells aren't negated at the end of a scenario because I believe it reads that the SPELL ends, not the spell's EFFECTS. Healing and damage spells are usually instantaneous; by the time the scenario's over, the spell's already ended anyway. This would only affect spells whose duration was still GOING, yes?

You're probably right that it could use more clarification though, Chris.

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Can't you just take the Gunsmithing feat and shell out 300gp to upgrade? I remember seeing somewhere that that's the rule in UC and they left it unchanged for PFS. Obviously I could be wrong, though.

EDIT: Woops, my mistake, got confused and thought we were talking about Gunslingers. Me=idiot.

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Just for the merchants I can think of a half-dozen products (many of them produced by Paizo, like the Face Cards) that'll let you pull out some randomized but fully-developed NPCs. GameMastery Guide has a great NPC gallery as well.

Shadow Lodge Event Coordinator - Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy®

Technically positive energy only suppresses the effects of a haunt for several hours anyway, doesn't it? Typically I see haunts that have a separate solution for ending the influence completely--for example

Spoiler:
in Season 3: First Steps Part II, there's a haunt in a well that you can lay to rest by retrieving the remains and taking them back to town to be given a proper burial.

Holy water also works if you happen to find some during the adventure or have it on your person, assuming it's not a super-special haunt that's immune to holy water for some reason (though I honestly can't think of any reason someone would do that, haha).

One of my favorites was the use of prestidigitation to attach circus music to a rogue's person just before he went invisible.

The party tracked him through the sewer by following the music. So much for the DM's dramatic moment.
