A soft *bump* comes from the direction of the door, causing Zayid to smile. "We'll stay," he amends.

*** The Cure ***

Zayid stares at the vial for a few seconds as he ponders the events that have led him here. Finally he gives a small shake of his head and pockets the cure; its side-effects are unknown, and now is not the time to experiment. There is yet work to be done.

Over the next twenty hours he remembers the vial periodically, but the same reasons for not taking it yet are still in play... so he waits.

*** Dismissal ***

Zayid's eyes widen as he recognizes the room. He stands quietly, listening, as the Sorrow speaks the words he thought he'd never hear. Aboki pads softly back and forth outside the room, his footfalls barely audible behind the Sorrow's voice.

At the invitation to join them, the young man's eyes widen... but only for a moment. Recovering control of his expression, Zayid considers the Sorrow's words. Join them? Not long ago they were talking about kicking me out or killing me, and now they want me to join them? Is it a trick? The others must not think so... oh, freedom! I could be free! I'd... I could... I... where would I go?

Back to the streets, to kill or be killed by the Jackals or one of Uncle's other associates? To some faraway land, to wander and die in a strange culture among people I don't understand? Back to Osirion, to become the person who looks like everyone else but has nothing in common with his "peers"?

Zayid frowns, studying his now-tattoo-free hands. The Guard would never have me... there's nothing they could do about that, short of magicking the whole lot of them. And... The young man shakes his head. I still don't even know which of these three I can trust; if any! Maybe I don't even know how to trust.

A soft whine is heard from outside the room, as if Aboki senses his master's troubled mind. Zayid fingers the vial in his pocket and smiles wanly. There's only one choice, isn't there?

Softly, slowly, the tanned Tear makes his reply. "If... if I say yes, no one can know? Not even... friends?"

Re: Ballistae:
In the first game I ever ran, I one-shotted a poor defenseless level 1 character with a ballista bolt to the chest. I didn't know the player at all, and couldn't do it... I ended up dropping an entire die of damage and still leaving her negative (but alive).

Aboki hisses again and continues to shred his opponent, despite his own dire wounds. Zayid, seeing his companion in mortal danger, comes to his aid in a flurry of teeth and claws.

Aboki keeps attacking his guy. If Aboki's guy doesn't go down, Zayid steps over to help. If Aboki's guy does go down, Zayid attacks the left guy.

Oops, I just realized I'd been conflating rake and rend. Turns out I have to roll to hit on rake. Right guy also takes 2 acid damage from the continuing effect of acid maw.

Cat-Zayid frowns, shaking off the feeling. A moment later, a spear manages to shake his concentration when it nearly impales him. Rat-like fur begins to sprout from his body, and a strong sense of internal conflict begins to grow within him. Scant seconds later, a man with the fur and fangs of a rat and the claws of a great cat tears into its prey! AC goes up by 2, Str and Con by 2, and (consequently) HP by 5. Zayid also gains DR 5/silver.

The young man's face describes a tortured state of emotions as he stares down at the walls and wonders what's going on behind them. Aboki, mindful as ever of his master's inner conflict, pads noiselessly up and leans softly into the man, as if to say, Hush... all will be well. I am here.

The rat-cat-man takes a deep breath, one hand twining itself in the fur of Aboki's neck, and then moves.

I can't quite remember how high up we are... if it's 30ft or less, he'll jump, otherwise he'll climb down and head for the front gate toward the others.

Seeing Halsanna loose an arrow, Zayid nods quickly and pulls his own bow, nocking an arrow to the string as fast as he can (albeit much more slowly than the professional archer beside him). He pauses a moment before releasing it toward the dock worker nearest the entrance.

Zayid moves quietly after Halsanna, secretly glad that he and Aboki got watch duty. We're too easy to recognize... the mask does nothing if you've got a big cat following you around. Fondly scratching Aboki behind the ears as he watches the exchange at the gate, Zayid allows a slight smile to creep onto his face. Not that I'd have it any other way, friend. And you're very good at keeping out of sight when you want to.

The pill he offers to Aboki, while with his other hand he places the locket around his neck. "Kwenda juu kisha, kula," he instructs the cat, who eyes him warily before letting out a feline sigh and swallowing the pill.
