Yohei turns to his comrades, "Good work out there everyone... Now we need to stop that catapult... Hayato, you and me are going to sneak up nearby and then see what we can do about disabling that thing or maybe keeping it from being built at all. Riku, Goro, I want the two of you to head back to the castle. Find Captain Takagami and report the situation out here to him. From the look of it, things aren't a whole lot safer back that direction so keep your guards up and be careful."

Looking the two younger Tengu in the eyes, Yohei gives an uncharacteristically formal salute, "Go for it men." As the brothers depart, Yohei turns back to Hayato. "Alright, let's just hope we can find a way to take that thing down... I'm not sure how excited I am about the idea of fighting off all of those knights on our own..." Hayato nods his agreement and the two Tengu sneak off through the woods.

Eep.

Breathing a sigh of relief as the White Tengu falls, Yohei calls out to his companions in their native tongue, "Fall back to the woods! I'll hold the invaders off as long as I can and then we can meet back up! Hayato-kun - keep them safe!"

Glancing back to get a better look at what's going on in the city before turning back to the battlefield, Yohei fires another volley of arrows into the archers to help cover his friends' escape.

You can probably take them from here. I trust you to run with the brief personalities they've shown so far for whatever you need to do.

Phew. Let me know if anything in that post didn't make sense.

Okay here goes.

Goro, Tengu Archer
Round 1, Initiative 21
AC 14; HP ??/7

Looking frantically about as the battle rages around him, Goro's eyes lock onto his commander arriving on the battlefield and his spirits rise. Ever since he met Yohei a year ago, he always felt at peace in the older Tengu's presence. Goro and his brother Riku had been living on the street back then, scraping by as pickpockets and thieves, Yohei had taken them in and trained them in the art of Kyudo, the way of the bow. Seeing Yohei here, now, just when he was certain that he was about to die, brought hope to the young Tengu's eye. Giving his superior a formal salute, Goro hunkers down and looks to Yohei for his next order.

Delay.

Riku, Tengu Archer
Round 1, Initiative 21
AC 14; HP ??/7

Riku sees Yohei arrive and maintins his position of cover. He did not quite share his little brother's complete reverence of their commander, but respected his skill on the battlefield nonetheless. 'If anyone can get us out of this, he thinks to himself, 'it's gotta be Yohei.

Delay.

'What a day...' ponders Hayato as an arrow thwacks into the tree above his head. 'Welp, I guess it could be worst.' Though a veteran of many small skirmishes, the one-eyed Tengu has never seen a battle like this, but he takes it in stride. "Yo! Boss! What's your order?" he calls out as the dragons streak overhead. 'Well that'll complicate things... But something seems off...

Looking up at the dragons in the sky, back at the city, then back again at the White Tengu, the rows of archers, and the advancing cavalry, Yohei gulps. 'I think we have a problem...' Gritting his teeth, Yohei calls out to his men, "Focus fire on the white archer!"

Drawing back his own bow, Yohei lets the world around him fade away until the only things in his field of vision are the tip of his arrow and the White Tengu. Focusing his ki, he fires off a blinding volley of arrows.

Phew. Everyone's stats are in Yohei's profile now by the way.

Yohei Init: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Hayato Init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Archers Init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

His vision focused on the White Tengu's arrow, Yohei yells out an order to his men, "TAKE COVER!" before he ducks down behind the tree and prepares himself for the incoming blast.

Yohei turns his head sharply at the sound of the explosion and gives a curt nod as he rushes off after the guardsmen. Dodging his way through the croweded hallways of the Palace and out into the courtyard, he soon overtakes the guardsmen. Drawing his bow as he runs, Yohei prepares himself for what he might see when he enters the forest.

'Must- Hurry. My men- In danger.'

'Hayato-kun...'

Heh, yeah. Well for now I'll just trust that he's leading us somewhere awesome.

Narrowing his eyes, Yohei follows the Captain. "There's something else you need to know Cap; The reason I split with Azami-san and Kyras-san was that Hayato-kun and my men had scouted out the forest where I ran into the caravan last night. I followed him into the woods and it turns out that the caravan has moved on, but they did some building before they left - the ground was covered in sawdust. I also found some glass vials with some sort of fizzy potion inside... and I saw some wagons that looked like the ones last night in the middle of the city today. Everything looked different and I didn't see any siege equipment or anything, but one of the men with the caravan seemed to recognize us and hid himself away. After seeing everything in the clearing, I think maybe the caravan might have disguised itself and snuck into the city!"

All of this combat going on is making me want to fight something. I should probably punch the Captain.

Yohei looks confused, "Azami-san? She hasn't shown up yet? We met up with a guy who works for General Hotoru named Wong Tsai. I parted ways with them in the Palace courtyard... but they should have arrived by now... Do you know this Wong Tsai fellow Captain? He seemed to know you and said he had some business with you and the big Erodal guy."

Leveled up. Took my average. Not much changed for Yohei this level. Took Improved Initiative for my feat as it never hurts to have more Init!

I forget, are we taking averages for HP or rolling?

It worked out to time well with my usual weekend lack of posting at least, heh.

Yohei twitches his beak to the side, "Well that wasn't very exciting. I was hoping my sword would turn into an elephant or explode or something. Oh well! Maybe we should take one of these vials back to the Palace, I bet someone around there would know what they are. Either way, I definitely have to report this to the Captain. Hayato-kun, take charge of things here and have the men start fanning out, looking for tracks or any signs of where those wagons went. I have a feeling I might already know, but I'll need to get this potion checked out to confirm it."

With a casual salute, Yohei sprints off through the woods towards the Palace. 'Have to hurry. Have to warn the Captain. If my suspicions are on the mark, those thugs might already be inside the city walls with a caravan-load of trouble!'

Here's hoping Wong Tsai is actually a bad guy and not just a jerk who happens to hang out with weird daemons!

Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (15) + 17 = 32

"Looks like they did quite a bit of building..." thinks Yohei out loud as he bends over to pick up one of the small glass vials laying on the ground. "Now, what have we have?"

Studying the strange liquid he grins, "Up for a little science experiment guys? Let's see what happens when I do this..." As Yohei speaks, he unsheathes his wakizashi at his belt and proceeds to pour the last of the liquid out of one of the vials onto the exposed blade, holding it out before him to see if the liquid has any effect.

Yohei stops when he sees his old friend and lieutenent rushing towards him, "Hayato-kun! Yeah, hold on a moment." He turns to Azami, "I'll meet up with you in the situation room Azami-san. Make sure our large friend gets there promptly, I'm sure the Captain is looking forward to seeing him." Turning back to Hayato and letting the others walk off, Yohei claps his friend on the back, "What's up Hayato-kun? Everything okay?"

It's impossible for me to succeed at either of those Sense Motive checks.

Yohei shrugs, "I guess we're all done. I was hoping to tag along and see what the Captain wanted with you, but I guess not." Turning to Wong Tsai, he asks, "Did you say the Captain was out? I had something I wanted to report to him... Do you know where he headed?"

Perception:1d20 + 17 ⇒ (8) + 17 = 25
Perception:1d20 + 17 ⇒ (7) + 17 = 24

Yohei inclines his head towards Azami and whispers, "We're being followed. Don't look. Someone on the rooftops to the left. Something is off about this caravan. The wagons look like the ones I saw in the woods, but different. Also, one of the men seemed to recognize us."

Doing his best to look casual, Yohei watches the caravan pass and keeps an eye out for any familiar faces while keeping his peripheral vision locked on the rooftops, waiting for their follower to slip up or make himself known.

Yohei downs the last of his sake and stands up from the table, "Phew, that was delicious! Well Tokine-san, I'm sure I'll be seeing you around." He gives Tokine a respectful bow and turns to San Pen, giving the same gesture, "Sifu, it's always a pleasure!" Turning back to Azami and Kyras he stretches his feathery arms out and grins, "Don't worry big fella, you're a guest, not a prisoner. Like I said, we're all friends here. Shall we head out?"

Sitting politely as the painting musical ceremony takes place before him, Yohei is thoroughly impressed and nods along to the tune of the flute. By the time things are finished though, he is beginning to feel a bit anxious that the lunch and sake haven't arrived yet.

As Izumi arrives with the food and drink, Yohei snaps to attention and a single tear falls from his eye, "It's so beautiful..." he stammers out. A casual observer might think the tengu is talking about the clearly masterful painting, sitting in the middle of the room, but anyone who knows Yohei well would clearly know that his attention is focused entirely elsewhere.

Turning with surprise at the young woman who has just appeared in the doorway, Yohei turns back to the Princess, "Quite a pretty one indeed!" Glancing to San Pen, he continues, "A gift from the Shotos is she? It seems you're making all kinds of friends Princess!"

Yohei perks up at Tokine's mention of food and drink, "Hey, that sounds great!" he exclaims with a wide grin. As the Curator walks away and he is left with a table full of foreigners and a closed-lipped Xorn, he turns to the princess and winks, "So, how are you liking the Empire so far Princess?"

Yohei looks up as San Pen mentions the Frostborn Tengu, but soon bursts out into laughter as the xorn describes his dream, "I never knew you had such an active imagination Sifu! So now all we have to look out for is a White Tengu taking a squat over the clan Shoto doorway!"

Quite a character indeed. I'm liking his interactions with the Del Solarion crew. Now we just have to figure out where the duece that cacodemon came from!

Setting down his bow and picking up the strange white feather, Yohei studies it curiously, his concentration eventually broken when Tokine returns with the paintings. "Well, well, what have we here?" Entranced by the shimmering colors, Yohei slips the white feather into an inside pocket of his robes and leans in close to inspect the paintings. "So this is a map? Doesn't look like it leads anywhere I've traveled before! It sure is pretty though, what makes it shimmer like that? Magic paint or something?"

How uncommon are white Tengu?

Shaking his head in bewilderment, Yohei smiles at the stranger, but keeps his bow raised, "That was quite an entrance indeed Banad-san. How convenient that some strange googley eyed demon should appear just in time for you to appear from no where and do away with it!" He allows his gaze to shift to the oozing carcass, "What was that thing anyway?"

Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (20) + 17 = 37
I can see everything.

Yohei's expression turns from jovial to puzzled as he spots the strange black thing behind Izumi. He begins to speak, "What the-" but is abruptly cut off by Rhon's outburst and the young woman's scream. Grabbing up his longbow from its resting place at his side, he spins to face whatever horror has appeared at his back.

Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (3) + 17 = 20

Leaning forward to listen in on the whispered Draconic, Yohei clears his throat and replies in the same reptilian tongue, "Kortesh zei vvrazrago tellarandrei vro sake grommm vayaatan tet-hon!"

Translation:
"Personally, I'd prefer to drink some sake rather than wells of anger!"

Grinning at the Draconicly dictating duo, Yohei chuckles, "See Azami-san, I told you we'd find a good dragon at this tea party after all!" Fixing his eyes on the warbarian, he does his best to swallow his amusement and sound somewhat serious, "Kyras buddy, it sounds like you may have gotten yourself into the middle of something pretty wild, but our Captain, Takagami-san, he's a great man, he'll look out for you if you're straight with him. As for these Dark Ladies and Black Dragonflights, I don't trust them much. You stick with us and you'll come out okay, but if you go switching allegiances things could turn out kind of sticky for everybody."

Yohei gives Kyras a hard stare, but after a few moments, breaks out into another laugh, "I'm just kidding you man, you don't seem like the type to go in with that bunch of creeps, especially seein' as I'm sure you wouldn't want to disappoint the lovely Tokine-san here!"

"Hey no need to get excited big fella, we're all friends here. Frankly if some criminal scumbags got a little bit melted it's no sweat off my feathers." Looking to Azami for her reaction to the warbarian's outburst, Yohei continues, "I think we can all agree that there's no reason for us to argue. As long as you don't mind coming along to the Palace with us, we should be good. If Tokine-san is uncomfortable realeasing you from her care, she is always welcome to accompany you." He gives Tokine a sideways grin, "I'm sure no one would object to having you present at any gathering Madame Curator."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Yohei inclines his head to hear Kyras' response to Azami's accusations, but sees nothing overly suspicious about the sorcerer's story.

@Yohei: OH SNAP. Awesomely amusing response to Kyras. I LOL'd at work.

Haha nice :)

I'm mentoring someone at work all this week and next week so my posting time is cut down to just breaks and lunches right now. Hopefully I'll still be able to keep up with the excellent fast and furious posts going back and forth :)

Kyras Erodal wrote:
"I don't suppose that's your secret name, is it?"

Grinning at the remark as he sips at his tea, Yohei responds in turn, "Ho ho, no sir! I have always been a Yohei since the day I was hatched. Daveth Ashvale is a fine fancy name in its own way, but I think I'll stick with Yohei for now. Speaking of nicknames though, I did hear from the Captain that you are sometimes called 'Dragonborn", where did you happen to pick up a moniker so scaly as that one?"

Disarmed by the solemn mood, Yohei gives Azami's shoulder a squeeze and steps forward, "That's funny, I had a weird dream last night too! I was flying around the mountains and I ended up in a huge city full of winged Tengu. There was a red dragon in my dream too, but he was a real friendly guy. Dragons aren't all bad, are they? Hey Azami-san, maybe the dragon in your dream was just being cordial-like? I mean, I'm sure dragons like to have tea as well and it makes sense that a friendly type dragon might want your company, yeah?" Smiling back at his friend, Yohei does his best to turn the mood more cheerful.

Turning back to Kyras and the others, he smiles again, "So anyway, I say we have a nice relaxing cup of tea... maybe some sake and some lunch... and then we can head back to the Palace. You're not in trouble or anything, big guy, really! The Captain just wanted us to bring you back and from the sound of things, keep you safe, so that you can attend the state dinner tonight. Azami-san still has your invitation afer all."

Yohei looks from Azami to Kyras to the foreigners, utterly confused by the new developments. When the revelation of Azami's loss becomes clear however, he moves up alongside the samurai and places a clawed talon on her shoulder for support. In an uncharacteristically solemn voice just loud enough for her to hear, he whispers, "Azami-san, I- I'm sorry. I stand by you in whatever comes to pass."

Know Nature: 1d20 ⇒ 5

As the temple fills, Yohei finds himself distracted by the numerous tapestries and painting adorning the walls. As he's admiring a particularly interesting piece depicting a brightly colored dragon soaring through the sky, his concentration is broken by the call of the jackdaw and he turns to see the spread that has been laid out for the gathering.

Walking back to Azami's side, he gives the woman a plaintive look, "Oh come on Ito-san, we can't turn down such fine hospitality! Let's stay for a bit and take a load off, we can deliver the big fellow to the Palace after tea. Besides this will give you more time to catch up with you new friend here." Flashing a smile to the Princess, he bows low and gives her a wink, "Good to meetcha Princess. I'm known as Yohei, of the Palace Guard, though I'm guessing you've already gathered that bit."

Alright, I'm back now so time to do some catching up :)

Also, are you saying that there is sake present at this tea party? If so, Yohei is totally down for a nip.

Phew, lots going on!

As Azami points out the man that is their quarry, Yohei gives her a look of disbelief, but before he can ask her how she knew that their visit to the Temple would yield such results, his attention is taken away by the crowd of foreigners and before he knows it, he is standing beak to mouth with San Pen himself. Giving a short bow, Yohei smiles warmy at the Xorn. "Top of the morning Sifu, it would seem the Temple is quite the popular locale this morning! Tell me, is Curator Tokine-san throwing some elaborate tea ceremony we weren't invited to?"

Upon hearing of the death of the Inspector, Yohei's smile turns cold and he swallows the cunning jab he was about to lay at the feet of of the gathered City Police and simply gives a solemn nod, following the others into the Temple. Once inside, his eyes immediately lock onto the massive Warbarian in the corner. 'I hope this big fellow comes peacefully... He looks like he'd be trouble if things turned rocky..."

Finishing the last of his rice, Yohei nods, "You're probably right Ito-san, I'll let you lead the way since you've met our quarry once before. But I must ask, what makes you think we'll find anything at the Temple? I mean, not that I'm opposed to a nice little detour, but skipping out on our mission for a cultural outing isn't like you old friend." With a sly smile, the Tengu leans back and stretches, puffing out his feathery chest, "Perhaps a new day is dawning where the great Azami Ito finally learns to have a little fun?"

Earlier

Looking up from the rice that he had been piling into his beak, Yohei swallows his mouth-full and smiles warmly at the approaching gaijin. "Azami-san! A fine morning indeed! Are you prepared to start on this hunt for the dragon-man the Captain spoke of? Where do you think we should start? I'm thinking the inn where he was staying would make the most sense, yes?"

Waking suddenly from his dream, Yohei almost falls out of his hammock before catching himself. Blinking away sleep's hold on his senses, the Tengu pulls himself down from his resting place and lands without a sound on the tatami mat below. Donning his usual robes, he clamps on his bracers and ties his headband around his forehead. Completing his morning ritual, he dons his cloak and heads out the door, ready to get started on the day's tasks.

His first mission: Find Azami-san and get to work tracking down this Kyras fellow. He doubts the woman is up yet, but knows she will likely gravitate to the mess hall when she does rise so he makes his way in that direction. Entering the hall, he grabs a bowl of rice and sits down at one of the low tables waiting for the gaijin's arrival.

Sorry about the slowness of the update. I've had a busy weekend turns out.

Yohei nods his thanks as the healers attends to his wounds and lays out his telling of the nights events, "Well, Ito-san has probably already told you everything that happened up until we parted, so I'll skip over that bit, but after we split up I laid low for a bit and then managed to sneak around behind their campsite."

"I heard some conversation... something about someone's sister, something changing things at the bargaining table, a great deal of money, Old Stonegard, and a Portney woman. It didn't make much sense to me, but they did say they were planning to get into somewhere tomorrow and I got a look at the hardware they were packing; lots of heavy weapons and armor along with enough strong wood to be build some siege engines."

"My recommendation is that we move out tonight in force and take them out before they can cause us any trouble. They didn't seem too worried about retaliation when I listened in on them so I'm thinking we could catch them by surprise maybe? What do you think Cap?"

Yohei doesn't really know much, but he's probably thinking the Wiener Ninjas and the dudes in the woods are connected somehow. As the Clan Sera's involvement in any of this, he thinks she's kind of a b&*#! but nothing more than that :P

Also, FYI - I'm on vacation this week so posting will be sporadic.

Narrowing his eyes, Yohei sneaks away from the campsite and once out of earshot, bolts into a run back to the Palace, weaving in between trees as he moves. The towering hardwoods flash past him on either side as he continues to run, his mind focused on his goal. He know must make the greatest haste to inform the others of what he has seen. His thoughts are of a single purpose as he moves, 'Must. Warn. Captain. Must. Stop. Siege.'

Upon breaking out of the forest, he hastily navigates the outskirts of the city and rushes through the city streets, nearly bowling over any passerbys unable to step out of the speeding Tengu's path. His gait is steady as he arrives at the Palace. Not even stopping when the guards greet him at the gate, Yohei bolts towards the Guard chambers and towards the Captain.

Moving as silently as the breeze, Yohei moves up behind the men and retrieves his bow from the wagon. Eying the weapons of war, he really wishes he had a vat of alchemical fire or some method of destroying these supplies. As he backs away from the wagons, he eyes the area specifically looking for anything capable of the type of destruction needed to take out this level of hardware.

Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (15) + 17 = 32

I think I remember you mentioning that there is no gunpowder in this world. Is that correct or are there just no firearms? Gunpowder in a non-firearms sense meshes pretty well with the Asian setting, but I understand if you want to avoid that road completely. Although, if there did happen to be a big old barrel of gunpowder nearby Yohei would be pretty happy right now, heh.

'Tomorrow eh? If they're talking about getting into the palace, I don't believe they'll find it as easy a task as they'd hope... Have to get around to that wagon and get out of here,' thinks Yohei as he begins to circle around the camp towards the covered wagon, still keeping a wary eye on the forests for the unseen sleep-arrowed archers. As he moves, he also makes a point to study the faces of the men around the campfire - if any of them have particularly distinguishing features, he would do well to note them now so as to better prepared to pick them out of a crowd tomorrow.

'We'll see about that...' thinks Yohei as he looks off in the direction of the campfire. His wounds still fresh from the arrows, he keeps his eyes peeled for scouts as he advances into visual range of the camp, trying to pinpoint the voice of the man with his bow.

The bow was a gift from his Sensei at the Laughing Raven Monastery. It had been specially crafted by the school's bowyer for him and he would not part with it easily.

After the search has abated, Yohei slowly rises from his hiding place, keeping a wary eye out as he moves and circles around to the spot where his bow was dropped earlier. As he moves, he ponders the events of the evening, 'What's going on out here? All of these warriors seemingly disguised as townsfolk. I hope Azami was able to make it back to warn Takagami about this...'

Yohei leans in close to Azami's ear and whispers, "Run like the wind Azami-san. I have another matter to attend to and will join you as soon as I'm able."

Looking back at the advancing mob coming from the west and then to the archers blocking the northern route, Yohei runs south, hoping to draw some attention away from Azami as she makes her escape. As the bowfire continues, he does his best to duck behind the nearby trees and branches and doesn't stop until he feels he is out of sight at which point he finds a hiding place and hunkers down.

I'm assuming directions based on the rotation of the map. I'm also assuming that the palace lies to the east and that is where Azami will be running. My hope is that the crowd will split up and give Azami a better chance of escaping. My plan after that is to wait until no one is around and then sneak my way back to the bow before getting my butt out of there as fast as I can.

@DRA:
I'm not too keen on leaving my bow behind... Has the angry mob already passed the location where I dropped it? If so, I'm considering using my superior movement to loop around, probably using Ki points to boost my base speed up to 70 ft, allowing 140 ft of travel per round. Does this sound viable?
