As the others wander off throughout the town, Xavier finds himself walking the near-empty streets back to the Temple of Verena. He stands outside the temple and gives a wistful sigh. If anyone had told him that he would suddenly be ejected from the church and forced into the town guard due to a riot and being knocked down by a pig...well he would have thought that person mad! But here is was...an outsider to the only life he had ever known. What possible reason could Verena be punishing him for?

He spends the rest of the watch outside the temple, and as his shift ends, he wanders back to the barracks, no less confused about his circumstances than he had been before.

Xavier will try to do whatever he can to get back to the church. This was his vocation since he was little, and being forcibly removed from the church has him really bummed out!

Xavier watches the others take off after the pickpocket.

"Stop...stop..."

He moves over to the frau who was the victim.

"Are you alright frau? Do not worry...the others will catch him."

Xavier glumly picks through the equipment and chooses a simple leather jack to cover his body and stout cudgel with a leather thong so he can carry it opposit his dagger on his belt. He quietly shakes out his cassock and folds it carefully and places it at the bottom of his footlocker. He places a guard's tabard over his leather jack and, with a deep sigh, walks out with the others. The only remaining trapping of his old life is his holy symbol, which he keeps hidden under his shirt.

Xavier simply steps forward when his turn arrives and mumbles out his name.

"Xavier March, a former initiate of Verena."

He steps back and lets the next person try their hand at impressing the Kaptain.

Initiate March, did you really dig around in the mud looking for money during the riot? How does that fit with the tenants of Verena? wrote:

Stepping forward to answer the question when his time comes, Xavier looks to the judge and speaks.

"This riot was not of my creation and I attempted to retreat from the combat as swiftly as I could. Damage to many stalls had been perpetrated, and goods, broken and otherwise, were strewn about the place. The money was obviously belonging to one of these merchants and thus needed to be safeguarded for the inevitable return to its owner. I was attempting to gather this precious coinage for this purpose, but understand that I was not given the opportunity to return said wealth to the proper authorities as I was run over by a pig, then arrested and placed in a cell. All my goods are now gone, but if Your Honour has access to it, then I would ask it be returned to the proper owners, or given over to my temple for them to decide its bests disbursement.

Xavier steps back after this lengthy explanation and stands quietly as the others answer their own accusations.

Taking the note, Xavier folds it after reading and turns to Osanna.

"It appears that my being here might be divinely ordained. I place myself in your care Fraulien Winandus."

"By the Law and Order of my goddess, I took NO part in the death of this 'Fiery' person, and will take the Trial of Truth to prove it so, regardless of what this common rabble would say! The words of the goddess mean more than any mortal's mumblings. However, I could not honestly plead the same for these others, as I know them not."

He thinks about the possibility of the outcome of such a trial, and while he is sure he could indeed be vindicated, the others here would most likely hang...and that was no form of justice.

"My life is in the hands of the church...but I would not see the innocent punished if I can do something to protect them. I admit NO guilt for this riot, but I will give a plea of 'No Contest' and take the same punishment the others have been offered if my temple will allow it."

Arrgh..away one day and so far behind!! I was going to bring up my standing as an Initiate of Verena to see if it would get me out...or even offer my services to the group, as a member of the Church dedicated to Truth and Justice.

While on the ground, Xavier gathers up some of the coins he had noticed before the pig barreled into him.

Well this will help pay for the cleaning and repair of my cassock at least! he thinks as he slowly regains his feet.

As he escapes the angry attention of the performer, Xavier finds himself surrounded by the remains of stalls and their owner's goods. He is looking around, more out of curiosity than anything else when a voice at his shoulder interrupts him.

"Errm..umm..yes, a nice day indeed."

He looks over his new companion before continuing.

"I am Xavier March, Initiate of the Temple of Verena. A pleasure to meet you, Ser....??"

Continuing his backward movement, and almost at the edge of the chaos engulfing the Marktplatz, Xavier feels a little more bravado and taunts the ineffective carnival performer.

"There, you see. I am protected by the power of Verena as her mortal representative here on earth. Stand back or be burned by her glory!"

Is there a way for Xavier to intimidate or otherwise use his position as a priest to cow the attacker into leaving him alone??

After examining the pie, the initiate of Verena speaks to the merchant.

"Well lets me suggest this. If you feel that there is nothing wrong with this food, then you finish it. If you do so, then it will prove you stand by your product, however you you cannot or will not finish this pie, well then you must return this man's money!"

He holds the half-eaten pie out to the merchant and waits to see what he does.

Xavier looks over the waves of humanity wandering the marktplatz and smiled. This is a place where life is lived and people experience real joys and sorrows. Altdorf always felt like he was part of a play...doing his part, but nothing more...just going through the motions of life. As well the temple was a stagnant pool of old men who gripped onto their positions harder than to life itself, but here...here he had a chance to make a difference.

He had arrived with the last group of soldiers being transferred to the city. The political upheaval had made the Temple of Wise Verena, the Goddess of Learning and Justice an important hub of activity. Court cases came and went, as well as investigations and the call for justice from all walks of life...yes this was just the place for him.

Having settled into the temple already, Xavier wandered the town, taking in the sights and familiarizing himself with the various districts.
