Male Dwarf Druid 5
Witness looked up at the drow bemusedly. She felt that at some point in the past, she wouldn't have tolerated such a ephemeral answer, but for things were so strange and new that she was not inclined to push the issue. She took stock of the group in front of her -- presumably they must be mercenaries; such a varied group of fighters and magic users generally meant trouble for someone. She minced around the rapier that Kronos and the half-elf were bent over. "You should destroy that. It has done many terrible deeds and is so steeped in blood that I doubt it can be redeemed." The words were out of her mouth before she even knew she was saying them.

Witness looks back at her, a strange light gleaming in his eyes. "It is right. It is my time now, and yours will come later. The circle is closed, and your fate hangs there just as mine does." He touches the tattoo on his chest, sweeping branches sheltering many kinds of fruit, each one slightly different. "I look forward to seeing you again."

Wincing at the burn, Witness tries to complete the ritual. Concentration: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 vs DC11. As he successfully moves his hands through the final passes, bats swarm down from the ceiling and surround the drow. Directing fiery eyes on the Drow, focusing and causing her robes to smoulder. DC 16 Fortitude or take 1d6 fire, followed by DC 16 Reflex or catch fire.

Witness circles warily around, letting soothing magic flow into his wounds but keeping his eyes fixed on the pool of shadow.
Sensing its prey through the darkness with it's keen ears, the dire bat continues the attack on the now prone drow. Bite (smite): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21, Damage: 1d8 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

Saves:
Fort (DC16): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17 Concentration (DC13): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22 Witness lets out a grunt of pain as the negative energy washes over him, but manages to complete the ritual. A huge bat, limned with holy light, flickers into being over the drow. Swooping down, it snaps at her face.
Backing up further out of reach, Witness takes the eyes of a salamander and crushes it, dabbing the powder on his eyelids and chanting almost-recognizable syllables in his baritone rumble.

Croaking commands to continue the attack, he crouches behind cover and begins another ritual Casting Summon Natures Ally III for a Dire Bat, centered on the Drow. The remaining birds continue to tear into the priestess.

Two eagles materialize in the air above the drow and one blinks into being on Witness' shoulder. Smiling savagely, the dwarf rips a strip of cloth from his sleeve and ties the twist of fabric around of the leg of the bird. Muttering, he passes his hand over the strip, which gradually starts to radiate a strong light. With a sharp cry, he sends the eagle aloft and directs it at the drow. All three eagles dive at the priestess and tear with teeth and talons. Crunch:
Move action to do the fabric bit, standard to cast Daylight on it.
Two of the eagles full attack. All will use Smite Evil on the drow. Entangle summary: Area is Difficult Terrain (all squares count as 2 for movement).
Creatures in area make a Reflex save. Fail = entangled
Any who enter the area make Reflex save immediately. Fail = entangled and movement ends.
Any who remain in the area at end of casters turn must save again. Can attempt to break free as a move action by making Strength or Escape Artist check vs. DC of the spell.

Looking up sharply at the animals, Witness makes a snapping flick of his hand in their direction, urging them to flee. Handle Animal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Trying to keep himself as concealed as possible, Witness places one hand on his sacred tattoo and makes a smooth twining motion with his other, murmuring under his breath. Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

As he hears what is likely an enemy approaching, Witness starts covertly casting, preparing himself for battle. Confident that the general echoes of dripping water in the large cavern will cover his quiet chanting, he casts Barkskin, Cat's Grace, and Aspect of the Falcon. On peeking out and spotting the drow priestess, a satisfied glint comes into his eyes. The drow are a plague on everything I hold dear, and this one in particular owes me for my times as a slave. This will be a good death. Remaining in a crouch and casting around a large mushroom, he begins the ritual to bring some allies into being. Witness is casting Summon Nature's Ally II, choosing to summon 1d3 ⇒ 1 vipers, centered on the drow.

Aight. Backstory: Witness is somewhat a legend around the Null Zone, and to the younger human guards and soldiers he was as immovable and unchangeable a sight as the Zone itself, the strangeness of a dwarf that can talk to trees worn down to normality by sheer weight of years. He's been researching the Zone and it's effects on the nearby environment for almost as long as he can remember - certainly for the last 160 years or so, which means that he's seen three generations of the younger races come and go from his forest shack. Before that, Witness figures that the descending warhammer that is his earliest clear memory must have scrambled his brains a bit - the dim and confused memories that precede that event usually don't make any sense and some (such as vaguely recalling being present at the groundbreaking of Royalton) are impossible.
The last 50 years of observation have provided no new data, so Witness finally decided that it was time to do a little exploring. Thinking perhaps to see if he could track rumors of Zone-like activity in other, desolate places of the world, he traveled to Startville and set about gathering supplies. His canny eye for purchases and obvious skill attracted the wrong kind of attention, however, and he found himself on a drow slaving cart, watching the cave ceilings roll by through eyes paralyzed open by crossbow poison. Since then he bides his time in the slave pens, with a sense that a great change is coming growing every day. |
