Blood Angels Assault Marine

I'm still here, Brother Corbulo!

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Initiative: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

GM, how close are they to me?

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Apologies for the delay. I graduated from high school and I've been busy filling out college course things...

"Hold brothers," Vittore orders, holding up his hand in a halting gesture. "I think I sense something..."

Awareness 51: 1d100 ⇒ 94

...it's been a real pleasure knowing you all. XD

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Congrats on getting married!

Apologies for the delay. I graduated from high school and I've been busy filling out college course things...

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore nods and then sets to go with controlled haste to the reactor.

Do I need to roll for anything here, GM?

Blood Angels Assault Marine

VIttore makes an All-Out Attack against the xeno, shouting "Emperor smite you where you stand!"

[ooc]All-Out Attack grants a +20 bonus to hit. Opponent cannot dodge or parry. Anything under 67 hits.[/dice]

Attack #1: 1d100 - 20 ⇒ (68) - 20 = 48
Damage #1: 1d10 + 6 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 8 = 20

Attack #2: 1d100 - 20 ⇒ (79) - 20 = 59
Damage #2: 1d10 + 6 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 8 = 21

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Initiative: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Vittore shouts, "For the Emperor!" and brings his two power swords to attack, targeting the front-most pair of Tau warriors.

Are they point-blank? If so, +30 bonus. Rolls under 77 hit. If not point blank, then rolls under 47 hit.

Attack #1: 1d100 ⇒ 70
Damage #1: 1d10 + 6 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 8 = 23

Attack #2: 1d100 ⇒ 40
Damage #2: 1d10 + 6 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 8 = 19

6 Pen through Armor

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore first seals the depressurized area to buy some time. Do I need to make a dice roll for that, GM?

Mumbling to himself about carrying xenos taint within his body, the Blood Angel responds, "Power plant should be...rear of the ship. Six decks and one head aft later, we'll be sitting right on top of it."

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore reluctantly takes a bite out of the dead tau's brain. "Brother Morgan, when we get back," he mutters in between munches, "I want my blood to be swapped out. I don't want to carry this xeno taint in me any longer than necessary."

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore grimaces before mentioning tentatively, "Though it is loathe of me to suggest this, we can...consume the brains of the dead xenos. We might be able to learn how to operate their strange technologies to a level of competence where we can seal the hole."

The Opophagea allows for an Astartes to consume the flesh of an enemy in order to learn certain abilities. Rulebook says that said abilities can be either information or Skills. What do you think, GM?

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Initiative: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Vittore shouts to himself, "For the Emperor!" and falls upon the Tau, swinging his power swords with extreme prejudice.

The Blood Angel makes two Standard Attacks, one for each xeno.

Are the tau point blank in front of me? If that's the case, I get + 30 to my WS test, which is 47 + 30 = 77 or under to hit.

Attack Roll #1: 1d100 ⇒ 2 HORY SH!T
Damage: 1d10 + 6 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 8 = 19

Attack Roll #2: 1d100 ⇒ 37
Damage: 1d10 + 6 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 8 = 15

+ 8 Damage for Unnatural Strength (x2).

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore grouses, "What I wouldn't kill for a Tech-Marine...this place is like a labyrinthine space hulk, save for the fact that our enemies are Tau. Stay alert, brothers. There are many ambush points where a xeno can hide..."

How big/wide are these hallways? And what's the kill-team order?

I included the servitor.

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore acknowledges Joshua with a sharp nod of his helm and takes point, swords at the ready. Quickly, but carefully, he moves down the corridor, trying to locate incoming xenos before they locate the kill-team. He also searches for any rooms to take cover in when stealth becomes necessary.

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore acknowledges Corbulo with a sharp nod before steeling his breath and, once again, plunging both swords into the metal of the inner door.

What happens next?

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore takes the Imperial Fists' words as a sign to proceed. Murmuring a breath to the machine spirits within the swords, the Blood Angel lifts them and aims their tips downwards. The blades hover above the point on the doors before he stabs them into the metal.

GM, is there anything I should roll for?

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore grimaces and hits the activation runes to both of his power swords. The energy field blossoms to life and the Blood Angel gingerly approaches the door.

"I can guarantee you that once I cut through it, alarms are gonna ring since of depressurization," he warns before his face brightens. "Then again, we could use the distraction of the Tau scrambling to restore atmosphere to integrate ourselves onto the ship."

Both blades hover at the edges where the twin doors of the airlock form the hard seal. "Shall I proceed?"

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore squints at the control panel before giving his report:

"I wasn't trained to handle machines, let alone xeno-tech, so don't ask me to try to get human atmosphere back in order. I don't know about you, brothers, but I don't feel like pushing buttons at random until something exciting happens."

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore whispers prayers to the Great Angel as he unsheathes his power swords, thumbs on the activation runes at the ready. Finished with his litany, he sends a communication over the vox within his helmet. "Did the xenos notice our impact?"

My helmet's on. I don't want to be sucking void when we open the door. I'm playing safe an keeping my helmet on, even when we have a hard seal on the hull.

Blood Angels Assault Marine

"Where are we going to land? Are we going to crash the ship through the hull and pray we penetrate and not explode? Or do you have a subtler way of getting into the xenos ship, Ultramarine?"

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore mulls Corbulo's words over before replying, "A preemptive strike would be best in order to gain the most surprise. So," he gestures to the Ultramarine, "Lead on, commander who shares the name of my chapter's Sanguinary High Priest. I will follow you to hell and beyond if the Emperor wills it."

Blood Angels Assault Marine

For the record, I am perfectly fine with Corbulo being the leader. As long as I get to "rule of cool" my way through the ship with dual-wield power swords, I'm good to go!

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Wasn't Hephaestus having technical difficulties on his end with his account?

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore nods in response.

"I suppose that is fair enough, Ultramarine, but that still does not solve our dilemma of finding ourselves a leader. So you nominate yourself? I have no qualms about that as long as you have experience leading other Space Marines into battle. But does anyone else want to nominate themselves? If not, then Brother Corbulo shall be our leader for this mission..."

Blood Angels Assault Marine

If mag-boots come as standard fare for Power Armor, then hell, I don't need extras! Oh, I know: I can requisition another Power Sword (20)! Dual-wielding FTW!!!

Vittore decides to speak his mind. "Brothers, how shall we decide who will lead this kill-team? A decision must be made quickly before we make the appropriate preparations and requisitions for the mission."

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore suddenly interjects:

"The standardized Tau infantry weapon uses plasma as a byproduct of their ammunition. We could use either plasma mines or the Tau's own weaponry to destroy key locations on the Xyclorian ships to implicate that the Tau plan to take the Xyclorians by surprise, steal their shield and geno technology and leave them with nothing...

"Once we infiltrate the xeno vessel, we can use Brother Corbulo's requisitioned servitor to place the charges on the ship. If we time it right, there is a possibility to kill both xeno representatives and have enough time to swipe the required tech and escape during the confusion. That's what I recommend."

The only thing that I need to requisition from the armory are Mag-Boots (3), so you guys have 47 Requisition that you can spend as you see fit.

An Assault Marine isn't the stealthiest of fighters. Got any ideas how to make myself more inconspicuous? I swapped out my noisy chainsword for a nice and quieter Power Blade (Signature Wargear), but I'm stuck as to replacing my bolt pistol.

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Are we in the Jericho Reach in this campaign?

Blood Angels Assault Marine

I will consult the books for appropriate gear for this mission. Sorry I wasn't able to post yesterday; internet connection in my vacation spot is really bad.

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore grimaces at the information. "Lovely," he mutters, before asking the captain, "Does the Inquisition have any intelligence about the xenos, these...Xyclorians? Such as biology? Preferred combat tactics? Weaknesses? Weapon strength? Also, what matter of security will be escorting the Water Caste envoy to the meeting place?"

Blood Angels Assault Marine

I don't have much in the way of upgrading (for now), so I'm gonna permanently requisition a power sword. Dual-wielding FTW!

Blood Angels Assault Marine

^ Sweet! I'll get cracking on that after breakfast.

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Vittore squints at the text before saying, "Is there a set time frame in which these missions are to be done? I would imagine that the longer we give the xenos to negotiate, the chances of them joining forces would increase."

Blood Angels Assault Marine

Battle-Brother Vittore, signing in.

Sweet! Thank you for choosing us and may the Emperor bless the dice of all those not selected.

@Browman: Wow. Thanks for thinking that my background was really good! But what does signature wargear entail again?

Good luck to everyone! May the Emperor give you all the best chances to be selected.

^ Salamanders get +5 Toughness and +5 Intelligence and...

* Salamanders characters gain the Promethean Cult Demeanour.

* Bonus Talent: Salamanders characters begin play with the Resistance (Heat) Talent.

* Fire-Born Solo Mode Ability.

Fire-Born:

* Type: Passive
* Required Rank: 1
* Effects: The Salamanders speak of themselves as Fire-Born, referring not only to their volcanic home world but also to their skill with the crafts of forge and furnace. The Salamanders hold that all battle is a test of their skill, determination, and endurance: a crucible within which the strong are forged and the weak are annihilated. The Battle-Brother may either add the Proven (2) Quality (see page 96) to, or remove one of the Unreliable, Unbalanced, or Unwieldy qualities from any one weapon he possesses either as Standard Issue or as an item of Signature Wargear, due to his skill at creating and maintaining his wargear.

Improvement: At Rank 3 and above, the Battle-Brother’s stoicism grants him an increased resistance to fire, he no longer suffers the effects of being lit on fire. At Rank 5 and above, the Battle-Brother becomes so self-reliant that his Kill-Team does not suffer any loss of Cohesion from any attack, effect, or event that affects him. At Rank 7 and above, all enemies successfully set on fire by an attack by the Battle-Brother take 2d10 Damage (with no reduction from armour) per round instead of the normal amount for being set on fire.

Proven Quality for Fire-Born:

Weapons with a Proven quality always inflict massive damage and treat any die roll for damage lower than the Proven rating (as indicated by the number in parentheses) as if it were the Proven rating instead.
Thus a Proven (3) weapon would treat any die roll of 1 or 2 as a 3 for the purposes of calculating damage.

The Promethean Cult:

The Promethean Cult is a Demeanour unique to Space Marines from the
Salamanders Chapter.

The body of wisdom by which the people of Nocturne and by extension the Salamanders live is known as the Promethean Cult. Salamanders Battle-Brothers are the product of a unique combination of genetics and tradition; the result is the perfect warrior.

This perfect example of the Promethean Warrior embodies many principles. One of the most important is self-reliance, for the people of Nocturne lived on their savage world for countless generations before the coming of the Emperor. Even then, they never succumbed to the temptation to tame their cruel environment for they knew it made them stronger.

Another major principle of the Promethean Cult is that a warrior must never give up, whatever the odds. While all Space Marines are stubborn and resolute in pursuing their objectives, the Salamanders display this trait to the point of obstinacy. Vulkan himself would not abandon his kill when competing with the Emperor in disguise, even though it could have cost him his life, and all of the Salamanders are equally intransigent. They are stubborn in defence and relentless in attack, though this sometimes leads to them taking disproportionate casualties when others would have withdrawn to pursue alternative tactics.

In addition to these essential qualities of the Promethean Warrior, the Salamanders are extremely sturdy, and their favoured fighting styles promote toughness and the ability to stand in the face of overwhelming odds over those of speed or manoeuvrability. They train their bodies relentlessly, building constitution and muscle density in favour of
reaction time.

In temperament, the Promethean Warrior is level-headed and wise, seeking excellence in all he undertakes. Though he never makes a decision rashly, he rarely changes it once his mind is made up, though others may counsel him to do so. He believes that hardship and adversity are inevitable, and a price worth paying if the body and the soul are to be tempered so that both can withstand the inevitable final confrontation. Salamanders are also loyal to a fault, holding personal honour above all else. It has been noted on numerous occasions that the Salamanders, unlike almost all other Chapters, show compassion for ordinary humans. Perhaps because they maintain family and community ties even after their initiation into the Chapter, the Salamanders often prove themselves to be far more human than many, despite their fearsome appearance. Above all else, the Salamanders believe that their Primarch will one day return, and that all of Humanity will benefit from their shining example.

Looks like we've got a unique set of Killteam aspirants assembled!

I have stats for my GMPC Inquisitor (Sanctioned Psyker) that I still have from my Dark Heresy game if you want to use it. Oh, and I also have his assistant Interrogator (Arbites).

Good! The more xenos there are, the louder the machine spirits within my weapons scream for their blood!

But can you bring Chaos? It isn't 40k without the Ruinous Powers!

The initial attitude I was going for Vittore was "will sacrifice himself to save his brothers, regardless of what happens to him". He comes from a tribe of hunter-scavengers where familial bonds are very strong, and since the environment (in addition to the wildlife) is trying to kill you, I would think that keeping everyone safe is a top priority.

I would think that the sight of his kinsmen are being eaten by sand sharks would enrage him to the point of his body becoming capable of performing beyond its normal limits.

As an Assault Marine, the doctrine of "First one in, last one out' is where he exemplifies his desire to protect his brothers, a trait that would carry over to his Deathwatch brethren.

I wouldn't say that he's tainted by Khorne, but I'll leave that up to the GM's discretion. ;-)

I finally came out with Part One of Vittore's background!

Please let me know what you think!

Part One- By the Blood on the Sand:

It is said that the bonds of brotherhood run deep and strong within the ranks of the almighty Adeptus Astartes. This is a tenet that Battle-Brother Vittore has known since his ascension, and one whose truth he still feels deep within his body.

Vittore was born to a tribe of hunter-gatherers on Baal Primus, the fist of two moons that revolves around Baal, the planet that houses the Fortress-Monastery of the Blood Angels chapter. As the son of the chief and his wife, Vittore -whose name means "Victory" in a forgotten Terran tongue- quickly proved as proficient with combat and warfare as his father, becoming the pride of his tribe and enjoying the camaraderie of his kinsmen in the hunts to provide for the tribe.

But it was not to last. When it had come time for the Blood Angels journey to the moons and uplift the mortals into Astartes, Vittore and all other eligible aspirants from his tribe were to make the journey on their own as a sign of maturity and independence. Headstrong, they set off, excitedly making the several-days journey to be judged by the Emperor's Angels, but throwing caution to the wind in favor of presenting themselves first over the other tribes to the Astartes.

Baal Primus is of a harsh climate of shifting sands and hidden predators underneath its sands. Thus, it was too late for the proud aspirants to notice that they were being tracked by a pod of sand sharks, one of the moon's deadliest predators. If they had not been arrogant enough to ignore basic survival techniques, they would have been prepared for what was to come. But who knows such things? The galaxy does not deal in "what ifs?" or "maybes", after all.

The monsters came upon Vittore and his kin when they were only half-a-day from the arena as the boys rested under a rocky crag. What was briefly a sanctuary from the desert cold became a bloodbath, as Vittore awoke to the sounds of screaming and death. The sight of the monsters savaging his kin brought his blood to a furious rage. Screaming incoherently, he picked up his spear and moved to stand against the beasts and protect what little family he had left.

But despite the ferocity of his attacks and the prowess of his skills, he could not protect them all. By the time he drove a broken spear into the last sand shark's eye, all of his kin lay strewn about the desert in various forms of painful death. It was with a heavy and sorrowful heart that he began the task of burying his tribesmen.

It was only when he had finished the arduous task that he realized that he was. Who would come to intern him into the sands of his home planet? He could not go back to his tribe, for the journey was too long and he would return in shame. In his grief and delirium, he decided that he would spend the last dregs of his life to finish the journey to the place of judgment and ask for someone to bury him before he died.

Thus, it was a shock to the Astartes and other aspirants to watch as Vittore stumbled into the arena in the midst of the trials, half-dead and bloody. Veteran Sergeant Enzo, the overseer of the trials, was quick to respond, sprinting towards the youth and catching him before he hit the sand. Before Vittore lost consciousness due to dehydration and blood loss, he quietly asked with a faint breath to be buried under the mesa where his kin lay and finally join them in eternal rest.

Sergeant Enzo left the Vittore in the hands of a nearby Sanguinary Preist while he went to investigate from where the youth came from. Within a few minutes, he had retraced Vittore’s steps all the way to the bloodstained mesa where the Blood Angel beheld eight graves, marked only by broken spears, where the corpses of sand sharks stood in silent vigil over the bloody sand.

The Space Marine was able to deduce what had happened with all his years of experience. Moved by the sight and the youth's humble request to be buried alongside his brothers, Enzo returned to the arena and moved to sponsor Vittore's entrance into the Blood Angels. When asked by his comrades as to why he would personally select a near-dead scavenger, he would respond with 'Because the Angel told me to.'

On Baal, Vittore regained consciousness in the Apothecarion, where a bemused Enzo sat next to his bed. In a gentle but firm tone, the Veteran Sergeant told the youth that his deeds in fighting with his brothers against the monsters were 'enough of a trial', and that he was now a Neophyte of the Blood Angels.

'But why?' he asked, confused and distressed, 'I had failed my kinsmen. I let them die. I never-'

'Enough,' the voice of the Veteran rumbled. 'Do not insult me by suggesting that I erred in my judgement. You stood against the sand sharks with your brethren and never faltered in the face of the enemy. They may have died, but you survived to slay the beasts and avenge them all. That in itself is one of the core beliefs of the Codex Astartes, that union between brothers, be it biological or through combat that transcends death itself.

'You were meant to survive,' Enzo continued with zeal entering his voice, 'And the Angel damn me if you weren't meant to join our ranks as a Battle-Brother of the Blood Angels, the Sons of Sanguinus. Should you pass further tests, you will be ascended to the ranks of the Astartes and fight the Emperor's enemies across the galaxy with your Battle-Brothers...'

Vittore listened to these words with wide eyes and felt something in him stir, a buried emotion that was roaring to the surface. It was relief, relief that he had not failed his tribe and shamed the dead spirits of his kin. But with that relief came a burning fire, a fire that could only be quenched in the throes of battle alongside his brothers in blood.

In that instant, he knew what he was to become. And he accepted.

On that day, he swore by the blood on the sand that no more would he let a brother fall if there was nothing he could do about it. It was inevitable that casualties would be suffered in war, but damn him if he wouldn't try his hardest to prevent them from happening.

Thus was born Battle-Brother Vittore, the Space Marine who values brotherhood and loyalty as the highest of all things.

(It is pure coincidence that there were eight dead sand sharks and eight dead tribesmen, the number of the blasphemous sigil of the Ruinous Powers, and that Vittore was the ninth and only surviving clan member, the sacred number of the Blood Angels Legion and their Primarch, Sanguinius.)

Part Two- The Bonds of Brotherhood coming soon!
