Specifically from the feat Versatile Channel -

Note: This feat only applies to necromancers, neutral
clerics who worship neutral deities, or neutral clerics who
do not worship a deity—characters who have the channel
energy class ability and have to make a choice to channel
positive or negative energy at 1st level.
Clerics whose
alignment or deity makes this choice for them cannot
select this feat.

I marked the section bold that I think applies.
For PFS I would expect table variation, in a home game GM gets to choose how that works.

Getting all the Merciful Healer perks and then still using negative channeling feels wrong to me. Against the spirit of the archetype.

Grand Lodge

I'd be interested in trying The Strange out. Been wanting to give it a run before I jump in feet first.

Grand Lodge

It's been over a year and Character and Role card creation still say coming soon. Anyone have any idea if this is ever going to happen?

What's the hold up?

Before you get into tier discussions, with the second and third paragraphs, you determine your APL.

If your APL is 2.49 and below your APL is 2
If your APL is 2.51 and above your APL is 3
If your APL is 2.50 the table can choose to be 2 or 3.

You are correct that the language in this section is confusing.

You shouldn't look at tiers, until the APL of the group is determined. Then these instructions are clearer.

Round 7

"Aaaaaahhhh It Burns!"
Raider 1 then attempts to put out the fire burning him. Spending the full round and dropping prone to roll in the snow, he manages to put it out.
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

Meanwhile, in the lodge...
The half orc woman, gives Valgor an eye groping. Liking what she sees, she drops her dagger and places her hands up in a surrender stance. "You'ra handsome fella. Sorry about the stab, wasn't sure who was going to come around that corner. This was looking like a good time to abandon Rhokar..."

Valgor Sense Motive:

1d20 - 2 ⇒ (16) - 2 = 14
Valgor thinks that she is probably genuine, though appears ready to attack if Valgor makes a threatening move at her.

In most cases I would only recommend the core characters. The reason for the core are:

  • CORE play mode
  • Less complexity
  • Keeps barrier of entry for new players lower(Removes the oh you just played this character now go buy a new book situation)
  • As the older pregens are less useful it will encourage people to build their own characters

Well blasts aren't spells. Reading the feats, spell focus and elemental focus, they specifically call out spells.

There is a feat specifically designed for this called Ability Focus, but for a lot of GMs and for PFS this is a monster only feat and not available.

I would like this to work for my Kineticist's blasts, but need some sort of FAQ or proof this would work...

Grand Lodge

Why does Elemental Focus work? The feat specifically says it works on spells. I want it to work but can't find "proof" that it does.

Everything I've seen is that this is what Ability Focus is for. Which in a home game is great for a GM to rule on, but PFS has more strict rules.

So you want to spend prestige to make your faction who gave you prestige in the first place like you better?

I don't think this would work as the items you get via prestige have no monetary value.

Grand Lodge 5/5

I must have missed this before, I think I might try the Jiggy method for my next character.

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 = 14 +5
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11 +1
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 6 = 13 +3
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 1) + 6 = 12 +2

Nice post Jamir!

So we are figuring out how we know each other before the protest.

Arkapallus and Daryth
Arkapallus frequents the Long Roads Coffeehouse, so has regular interactions with Daryth. Mostly service related, though occasionally on the nature of Lady Docur's "ladies". Would know of Daryth's twin, but not really having much interaction with him.

Arkapallus and VJ
Sounds like both of us are of noble birth and grew up in Kintargo. We most likely attended the same school the Alabaster Academy and with Arkapallus being 6 years younger would only really know each other by reputation and probably on sight, but wouldn't have an active relationship.

Jamir and Arkapallus
As Lady Wintrish's Lutist, Arkapallus would surely have been at a society function in which Jamir had performed, though Arkapallus wouldn't know Jamir's name. As a sneaky slip, Jamir has probably come across Arkapallus practicing his flute in odd places such as in allies and near fountains, in the noble areas.

Dez Rattath and Arkapallus
Arkapallus probably threw some silvers your way once, as you pretended to be a beggar?

Grand Lodge 5/5

As I understand it, the vanity followers are not able to be targeted and are considered not in the area when combat happens.

This works for both players and GMs. So a player can't use a vanity follower to hold things or provide any combat effect at all. And as far as the NPCs that your GM controls the vanity follower doesn't exist.

Grand Lodge 5/5

Which character would you rather play? I didn't run my first character to 12 through Eyes, since I really loved my 5th one.

I really don't see a problem with you ghosting part 1, this is such a limited play experience that it won't hurt things.

Though I'd probably go with the replay star and use the bloatmage.

The new Seeker stuff coming out soon™ sounds like it won't be as level strict as EotT as well.

Just doing my part.

I don't have a list of what I have available to trade on hand. Though nothing fantastic. I give most of my boons away at local gamedays to those unable to make trips to conventions, or for people who have cool ideas for a build and need a boon.

Grand Lodge 5/5

Anyone want to hook me up with a Changeling?

Grand Lodge 5/5

Generally you can complete the scenarios in any order. There are a few that the boon on the last sheet indicates it needed to be in order.

If possible you should try to play them in order, but it is not necessary.

If you are talking about a sanctioned module or adventure path, then these do lock your character in until you complete them.

In the case of a module/AP the guide to roleplaying guild organized play pdf has instructions on how to deal with missing parts, generally your rewards would be lessened depending on how much missed.

Back to the OP a bit. I'd recommend not running Serpent's Rise in your area if you are planning to run Siege of Serpents at a local con/game day soon. There are massive spoilers for the Siege of Serpents in Serpent's Rise.

Grand Lodge 5/5

Having them show you a pdf of the book isn't going to be that hard. I can go spend 7 bucks right now and then give that to my bard. It's quite tempting at either price, one far more so than the other...

Round 3

Raider 2 moves so that he can swing at the healer, provoking multiple attacks. Faux and Vaethic make quick work of the bandit.
Faux: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 2 = 18Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Vaethic: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 2 = 13Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Raiders 9 and 10 move into position to attack Valgor, coughing and retching. Valgor cuts down the unarmored and very sick raider 9, and easily dodges raider 10's weak attack.

Valgor AoO on Raider 9: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

I would like to point out that the core assumption doesn't mean you don't need to "own" a core rulebook. It generally means that we don't need to ask you to see it for rule questions. If you are actively advertising you do not have one, you may be asked to leave a table.

There is an exception for brand new players, and that length of when a new player is not new anymore is not a specific time line, it would be up to the local VO or GMs judgement...

Sorry for the delays, Ben and Darren got Rich and I hooked on Xwing and well we did that all day and most of Sunday night...

Level 1 would suck, no one has anything cool. Between level 5 and 7 all the classes are pretty well defined. I've done this PVP tournament 5 or 6 times now. We used Level 7 pregens. NPC codex level 6. We also did the 1st level of the prestige classes from NPC codex one con.

Grand Lodge

You'll want to limit options like flying/teleporting and long term invisibility, otherwise you'll never end.

Also after a certain number of rounds you'll probably want to setup some form of sudden death.

We've also had to add in a anti-hiding thing.

Grand Lodge

In regards to the Arena that Flite mentioned, I actually run that event at the local cons. The only time we can really do it is after the Saturday night session. It's a PVP tournament and I select various pregens or npc codex characters. Winner usually gets a book from our prize support, and everyone who participates gets a boon.

We experimented with capture the point/king of the hill but I'm thinking of going back to straight PVP for the November convention. Working on making the arena cooler. Might add wandering monsters to increase the difficulty.

Grand Lodge 5/5

This was the Paizocon 2015 GM Boon, you could try and head over to the trade thread and see if someone could part with it. I already gave mine away.

Grand Lodge 5/5

Who doesn't allow higher level characters in Tier appropriate games? Probably should text me with this info. "Praise in public, discipline in private" to paraphrase our glorious leader..

As one of your VO's and an occasional organizer, I strongly discourage a level 9, in a 5-6 tier game, with all other characters lower level. Even aware players like yourself unintentionally overwhelm encounters, and while you make sure to share the spotlight, many of our players do not.

However, I don't think I've turned anyone away other than a 7th player or illegal character.

I usually allow the 7th, but if the table doesn't want a 7th...

Grand Lodge 5/5

Love the work.

The APG summoner isn't a legal choice so Unchained?

And frankly I'd like to see the border be purple around the summoner.

Red for inquisitor to match her outfit

Silver seems like a good choice for Magus

Green for the witch? But that creepy necrotic green.

In my opinion this is a failure of the event organizer as much as of both players involved.

It could be there was only one table but with just four players I wouldn't think so but my point being..

The event organizer has no control over people being jerks at the tables, the only people with that control are the "jerks" themselves.

1 table events are very common, due to space, community, and more probably willing GMs. To try and pass blame for someone's bad behavior on to the people who arrange and probably GM these games is insulting.

At Paizocon, I talked with John about this. The sense I got was that Andrew is right, not likely before October.

I've been running it for a while and we should finish up book 3 mid August, we might be able to get sheets for books 4-6! I hope.

OK. I will be preparing and building for a big post tomorrow. I will run through a couple of hours of time in game with a description and then we will be on a new map ready to begin!

I know I'm bad too, but we all need to pick up on checking and posting rate. Also don't be afraid to be chatty and post multiple time in a day, especially if characters are between combat stages and are chatting. You have til tomorrow to finish up any chat between characters before I move along tomorrow.

I have to say I admire your tenacity, even though I disagree with the need for this plan.

And with Socalwarhammers post, I'm feeling the need to do book audits at our local game nights. Think Nefreet and I should have a local chat about that, and include our VC.

As a VO, my job is not to verify your book purchases. I have a multitude of other things to do as Pirate Rob mentioned.

This thread is the same as the last bunch of threads that Nefreet posted campaign leaderships responses too.

There are solutions, you don't like them. From the previous threads it seems that most of the Venture Officers that have chosen to chime in are also supportive of the current rulings.

To sum it up, I do not want to be the Paizo book police.

Grand Lodge

These ideas are awesome. I'd love to implement them, though there are issues beyond the coolness that I'm not sure Paizo would want to deal with, such as an expanded liability and typically volunteers that work unsupervised with children require background checks and fingerprinting.

Though I don't see why this couldn't be available to the con in general, as I'd like to participate in some of these too.

The Delves were great! Thanks for having them!

Grand Lodge

2nd Paizocon, and frankly the best con I've attended anywhere.

First - Thanks to all the Paizo staff, you are the most courteous and approachable celebrities anywhere! I'd especially like to compliment you for your registration line awesomeness on Friday morning, I appreciated it last year and while I didn't use it this year the speed and accuracy was truly amazing. Also as mentioned above, your timeliness to the panels and events you were scheduled for shows us how much you care for your fans, though sometimes I wish you would have let panels run a little long since I was enjoying them greatly.

Scheduling

As a Tier 1 GM, the middle slot open was very appreciated. This allowed me to attend multiple panels and still have time for lunch and some last minute review/prep. Unfortunately there were still some panels I really would have loved to attend which overlapped with PFS time.
My request has also been mentioned above - but either a hour later start time or early end time, would have been greatly appreciated. As the weekend wore on that lack of sleep begins to catch up.

PFS
I enjoyed all my players at the events I ran. I hope I made your table experiences fun if you sat with me. Headquarters staff had a difficult job and incredibly long hours and they were amazing and patient and caring throughout, I am very thankful you were there and I wasn't!
I do however have suggestions. The even/odd scenario schedule was odd(didn't really effect me much as GM) but it created a bit of tension for players which they've covered more full above.
Both my midlevel core games were cancelled for no players, there was an over representation of core at this con, i do not think it will be nearly as bad next year as the core campaign matures.
If the room is that big, maybe an even bigger spread out of tables would have helped with noise issues which were admittedly only tough during the specials.

Banquet
Top notch. Was in the first 10-15 people in line and while it was a long wait, had great conversations with others and Jeff Alvarez as he patrolled the line area to chat with people. The food was excellent especially the beef. Our Paizo staffers were entertaining and fun to chat with during dinner.
I had heard that banquet tickets were available in the store for a while after con started, some sign or indication at the registration table may have helped with some of those frustrated to not get to attend, since it sounded like it wasn't a complete sell out.

Location
Being in the hinterlands while providing a brisk walk was a little rougher on GMs. Maybe another perk that could be offered for GMs is a special room block nearer to the convention space. Space was great, food was expensive, and the special con food was never open when I was hungry or had opportunity to visit. The restaurant options nearby were great.

Other stuff
Kobold Press and Wolfgang, I played another Midgard game and it cemented the setting as somewhere I want to explore as a player and GM a lot more. I purchased the campaign setting book and it was really the only truly for me purchase at the store. and for the love of Shelyn, Paizo and all 3rd party press need to give Bryan Syme a lot more work.

Store
Chris and Cort, thanks for manning the store and making every transaction easy and pleasant. Only issue here was, I was hoping to pick up a specific book that was available last year but this year you didn't have other systems books available. Things that were missing was FATE based stuff and Monte Cook Games stuff in particular.

Last but not least
Two particular Paizo staff made this convention extra special for me. Crystal Frazier and Mark Seifter thank you for the entertaining game and entertaining conversations. Crytal's Goblins and Dinosaurs was by far the best several hours of gaming ever and Mark's hallway conversations and panel talks were enlightening and remarkably informative. Thank you both for making a great con, even more memorable.
