In most cases I would only recommend the core characters. The reason for the core are:

  • CORE play mode
  • Less complexity
  • Keeps barrier of entry for new players lower(Removes the oh you just played this character now go buy a new book situation)
  • As the older pregens are less useful it will encourage people to build their own characters

Arkapallus Aulamaxa
Born Moonday, 14 Sarenith 4693

A young man who is very well dressed in the latest fashions. He carries himself with a noble’s aloofness but easily loses this attitude when distracted. Lady Docur’s is quite the distraction. He is known to read at the Long Roads Coffee House, but unlike most of its patrons, he generally reads pulp adventure novels with carefully bland but expensive bindings to disguise their nature. 5’9” in his heeled boots, his pale skin looks slightly pebbly and rough if you examine it closely, though he takes pains to disguise and cover the worst of the scales. He wears his long golden hair in such away that it covers his very slight horns which poke out right above his ears.

Mentioned family members:

Father - Elgin Aulamaxa - Patron of the Kintargo Opera
Mother - Calseinica Jhaltero - Very minor branch of the family
Aunt - Visbaronetess Delour Aulamaxa renowned Diva in Westcrown, suddenly turned cold towards my mother about the time of the unpleasantness down in Westcrown and their tiefling problem.

Other mentioned people:

Jhalston - Son of the Majordomo
Marliak - Daughter of Cook
Vercel - Stablemaster/Disciplinarian
Dame Professer Erlinia Leroung - Music teacher at the Alabaster Academy and sometime lover

Excerpts from Arkapallus' Journal

Fireday, 31 Kuthona 4699
We are party for end year, Ant Delr broke the glases. She is very mad. thnk she hetes me

OOC:
The last time Visbaronetess Delour Aulamaxa visited, she stormed off in a rage after using her high note to shatter most of the glassware. This is when she found out Arkapallus was a tiefling.Around this time a few of Arkapallus tiefling features start to manifest. The Visbaronetess is a famous Opera singer and played a minor part in Council of Thieves - she hates tieflings.

Oathday, 22 Gozran 4704
So I have to go to the party. I don’t want to wear the suit, it itches and is to stiff. Jhalston and Marliak are going to the river to catch turtles. Its not fair. Stupid Thrune.

OOC:
A minor member of the Thrune government visited Kintargo, and it was Elgin’s turn to host a grand society ball to honor the Thrune family. Arkapallus at 11 would have much prefered hunting turtles with the servant children in the evening.

Sunday, 21 Rova 4708
Asmodeus is our savior. Aurochshit.

Spoiler:
After church services, rebellious early teen bored out of his mind in the long and boring ceremonies of the official Church of Asmodeus

Toilday, 17 Erastus 4710
Father has forbidden me to see her again. He sent her away!! I hate him! She is everything that matters to me. Marliak has the sweetest kisses, the way her whole body blushes as we remove our clothes in the hay loft! To die for.

OOC:
Arkapallus has been having trysts with the Cook’s daughter in the stables hayloft for a while, this time they were caught in the act by Elgrin himself. He sent the Cook and her daughter away for beguiling his heir and son.

Wealday, 1 Arodus 4710
Jhalston is the one who told on us. Father is very upset with me. I punished Jhalston by punching him until he stopped moving. Father says that beating one’s servants is beneath me and that if a servant betrays you, it is Vercel’s job to mete out the punishment. He also said it is about time I started acting the noble.

OOC:
As Jhalston and Arkapallus were rough housing after dueling practice, Jhalston blames Arkapallus for Marliak being sent away. Jhalston had a crush on Marliak and his jealousy led to him telling Arkapallus’ father about the sneaking off to the stables. In a rage Arkapallus beat Jhalston nearly to death with his fists in a rage.

Oathday, 7 Sarenith 4712
Graduated Alabaster Academy, finally. Who cares about all that stuff. Money is what matters in Kintargo and we have that. Those lecturers don’t understand what its all about. Well Dame Professer Erlinia Leroung was worth my time, best grades from her.
Shensen is performing again tonight, I wonder if Father’s connections can arrange a meeting?

OOC:
Arkapallus is not terribly bright, and while school educated him he couldn’t be bothered to care much. Erlinia Leroung a young noblewoman teacher of music at the Alabaster Academy was his favorite class for the learning to play the wooden flute(annoys his parents-they wanted an actor) and the after class “activities”

Starday, 11 Lamashan 4714

ooc:
Finding that he enjoyed using his fist on Jhalston he has secretly been meeting and creating underground fighting clubs in Kintargo.

Oathday 5 Calistril 4715
Finally my own place. There is a lovely coffee shop just around the corner. The staff is nice and there is a great view of Lady Docur's School for Girls. If you sit in the one corner by the mantle there is an unobstructed view of the swimming pool where they ladies must wear the school's swimming uniforms. Though there seems to be a lot of the intellectual types that frequent the shop. At least I don’t have to explain the bruises and bloodshot eyes to my father anymore.

ooc:
Moved out to a small noble’s apartment and spends his late afternoons girl watching and being seen as a “Noble” should, he then makes his way to a fighting club to try and release his devils…

Fireday, 14 Arodus 4715
It looks like that young man, Daryth got into it again with the Dottari. I wonder if he would like to work some of his aggressions out with his fists? He doesn’t look very strong, but he seems to be quite the scrapper. I should perhaps leave him an invitation...

As this is a city/urban based campaign some things work a little different than adventuring in the wilds

How are we handling Cost of Living?
This is what the CRB has to say.

The Cost of Living table needs a custom one added between Average and Wealthy, something like Comfortable or Noble slumming it. 25 gp/month with nonmagical item up to 2g and meals/taxes up to 4g. What say you Hell's GM?

Is there any other mundane record keeping stuff we are going to hand wave or ignore?

So Hell's GM. I was working on the idea of a changeling brawler. I think it would tie in to the noble scion feat and help explain why I don't "work" with my family. The changeling has darkvision and +1 natural armor. The natural attacks would be secondary attacks with the unarmed strike of the brawler so not terribly useful or powerful.

These things are all available with creative swapping on a tiefling, and the tiefling gets a spell like ability too.

So what do you say?

For the strix, wouldn't it just be easier to require the wing-clipped alternate racial?

Just doing my part.

I don't have a list of what I have available to trade on hand. Though nothing fantastic. I give most of my boons away at local gamedays to those unable to make trips to conventions, or for people who have cool ideas for a build and need a boon.

Back to the OP a bit. I'd recommend not running Serpent's Rise in your area if you are planning to run Siege of Serpents at a local con/game day soon. There are massive spoilers for the Siege of Serpents in Serpent's Rise.

I would like to point out that the core assumption doesn't mean you don't need to "own" a core rulebook. It generally means that we don't need to ask you to see it for rule questions. If you are actively advertising you do not have one, you may be asked to leave a table.

There is an exception for brand new players, and that length of when a new player is not new anymore is not a specific time line, it would be up to the local VO or GMs judgement...

In my opinion this is a failure of the event organizer as much as of both players involved.

It could be there was only one table but with just four players I wouldn't think so but my point being..

The event organizer has no control over people being jerks at the tables, the only people with that control are the "jerks" themselves.

1 table events are very common, due to space, community, and more probably willing GMs. To try and pass blame for someone's bad behavior on to the people who arrange and probably GM these games is insulting.

At Paizocon, I talked with John about this. The sense I got was that Andrew is right, not likely before October.

I've been running it for a while and we should finish up book 3 mid August, we might be able to get sheets for books 4-6! I hope.

A player I would love to have played with us, refused partially because of the no chronicle sheet issue. This is too bad, since the AP is awesome.

Gary

I have to say I admire your tenacity, even though I disagree with the need for this plan.

And with Socalwarhammers post, I'm feeling the need to do book audits at our local game nights. Think Nefreet and I should have a local chat about that, and include our VC.

As a VO, my job is not to verify your book purchases. I have a multitude of other things to do as Pirate Rob mentioned.

This thread is the same as the last bunch of threads that Nefreet posted campaign leaderships responses too.

There are solutions, you don't like them. From the previous threads it seems that most of the Venture Officers that have chosen to chime in are also supportive of the current rulings.

To sum it up, I do not want to be the Paizo book police.

We didn't get in line until almost 7 last year and it looked like an hour line at least. As soon as 7AM hit, the line moved and really never stopped moving. We were through it in less than 15 min. Their won't be a problem making 8AM games. You will probably even have time to shop in the store as well.

The hotel unlocking rooms for the lottery games was the real problem, we started late because of that.

I just don't understand why there is a push to negatively effect your GM pool. This will do nothing to encourage people to GM more. If their stars are why they are GMing, then you are just making people less likely to GM.

A party without a dedicated healer is the norm in a lot of games. There is enough characters that can use wands though that this isn't usually a problem.

Other than a pregen Kyra once in a while, I don't usually see any.

Blind Kobold wrote:

Well if its just an expanded repertoire of feats that are siege/vehicle related that could be preventing it from being legal, why not change it for legalization in PFS? It wouldn't be much different than an Alchemist losing out on the Brew Potion feat and it gets replaced with the Extra Bombs feat.

Like:

In addition to combat and grit feats, a buccaneer can select from the following general feats as her bonus feats:...

Right and then they would have to go to every archetype/prestige class that someone complains about not getting to play and adding this line for each of those. This would then require re-reviewing hundreds of options and the cumbersome additional resources document and modifying all this.

"Uh. umm. I think this cavern is not going to be here in about a minute or less," thinks Vitreous at the crew. He struggles with the blightning and slams it into the side of the mesa again.

Mesa Slam!: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25damage: 2d8 + 11 ⇒ (4, 8) + 11 = 23

"I don't think I can fit inside the pagoda in this form. You should escape with as many of the weird goblins as you can. I'll take the mesa and the cavern with me!"says Vitreous. A strong wave of determination mingled with excitement washes through the link as he relays his intentions to stay behind. The ladies will love this! The hero sacrificing himself to save everyone! They all stand their grieving and in shock, then I, back in regular form, come crawling out of the rubble! It's a surefire plan!

Spitting out the blightning, Vitreous shouts out to the big fire god thingy, "Hey big guy! Lets make this exciting! We are going to go out with a bang and take all this foul necromantic doohickies with us!"

Vitreous really believes that he will survive somehow, and come back to try and woo Nuggy!

I'm a VO in Jerrum's area. Core is by no means going to replace the current games being offered. As it stands right now, we are adding a new day and time for a Core.

This particular day and time is specifically setup around a few people's college and work schedule. Monday at Noon. All the regular people usually available for that slot are interested in replay and trying out Core for the challenge.

Towards the end of February we might start adding Core options to the regular schedule, while the majority of the local area here is supportive of Core as an idea, there are many people not currently interested in playing it.

With 3-4 play opportunities a week available for Normal PFS play, and adding a Core Option will give us 5-6 available sessions can't be too bad.

Monk was one of my first thoughts as well. I enjoyed the core mechanics, and while Quiggong is awesome, I think they will do just fine with out.

I think that people are too worried about making super powered characters, I never felt that rogues and monks were bad options.

Frankly, I'm looking forward to combats taking more than 1-2 rounds.

"Ssss... I wonder how long til this messSSaa collapsssess," hisses Vitreous. With that commentary and a thought about earthquakes and mesa interactions, the humongous snake with wings dive bombs one of the necro-lightning elementals.

Thanks for this informative thread Nefreet. It has solidified my mind on the whole issue.

Until campaign management says otherwise this is how I'll rule and encourage the rulings in our area.

Weapons, ammo, wands do not provoke in SLWS or regular wrist sheaths.

Scrolls, potions, and anything else do provoke from sheaths.

I've seen a lot of comments/posts that indicate that there isn't interest in 12+ due to reporting or general interest. (read a bunch of these threads) I would guess that this is partly due to not actually having anything on offer that is tied to the pfs campaign.

Module/AP sanctioning isn't the answer. None of that material realistically fits into the PFS gaming structure. Every module over level 8 I've run for PFS at con or otherwise has to have significant on the fly cuts to fit in to time slots.

When you advertise that there is really nothing to do after level 11, you don't get after 11 play.

I can see in the Greater Sacramento region at least two tables of 12-16 play a month, if offered in scenario length segments. From my con attendance within the Bay Area, I'm sure they could field 3-4 or more tables a month throughout the region of high tier play.

I'm not asking for monthly 12+ scenarios, but one or two a season would sure be nice.
