Trinia eyes Kroft with suspicion, but answers anyway. "I was hired by the king's chamberlain to paint a portrait of the king. I wasn't told explicitly, but getting a painting wasn't the main reason. I should be to better the mood of the king. He wasn't well back then." "It was well paid and an easy job. I went to the palace and worked on the portrait for several hours a day until the king grew tired of it. After about two weeks the portrait was finished, my work done and the king was still alive. Still not well, but alive. And I haven't seen him since then. That was over two weeks before he died." "And my job only consisted of doing the portrait. Nothing else. Of course I talked to him when he asked, but it was only small talk. And nothing else."

"I don't have any suspicions. I don't even know if he was killed, or if it is a curse of the gods that befalls everyone that ascends to that throne. When was the last time a king or queen of Korvosa died of old age?" "I was there for some hours a day for about two weeks until the portrait was finished. If she indeed was involved she had better opportunities than when I was staring at the king for my job. It's the queen that started with unfounded accusations, it's only fair to return the favor and see if she doesn't make a better suspect." "Also you are making my point. I don't see you hesitate accusing me, or at least questioning me as the main suspect. Because it is convenient and doesn't cost you anything. Asking the real questions would cost you dearly." She thinks about it for a moment and adds "What did they actually tell what I supposedly did? And how have they supposedly 'found out' so long after I was last with the king? Have you checked the credibility of that? Do they have anything or is it just the queen's word about it?"
