I feel that one of the coolest things about the bard is the interesting spells they have exclusive acces to (like modify memory). I really loved the spells Tempus fugit and Dream from the 1st edition Unearthed Arcana and thought they would make good Bard spells. Tell me what you think of these:

Fantasy
School (universal); Level: Bard 6
CASTING
casting time: 1 hour
compnents: V,S,M
EFFECT
range: see text
target: see text
duration: see text
saving throw: see text
spell resistance: yes
DESCRIPTION
You spend the casting time of this spell fantasizing and daydreaming about what you’d like to happen. When you return to reality, you find that your imaginings have come true!
This versatile spell can do any of the following things.
- Duplicate any Bard spell of 6th level or lower.
- Duplicate any non-Bard spell of 5th level or lower.
- Duplicate any non Bard spell of 6th level or higher at a reduced caster level
- Undo the harmful effects of many spells, such as geas/quest or
insanity.
- Produce any other effect whose power level is in line with the above
effects, such as a single creature automatically hitting on its next attack
or taking a –5 penalty on its next saving throw.

A duplicated spell allows saving throws and spell resistance as normal,
but the save DC is for a 6th level spell. When a fantasy spell duplicates
a spell with a material component that costs more than 1,000 gp, you
must provide that component.

The material component of this spell is a performance or creative work depicting the Bard’s fantasy. Mechanically, this takes the form of a perform or craft check whose DC is based on the power level of the intended effect.

This spell can do either of three things:
1. It can confer a luck bonus equal to your caster level to yourself or one ally
2. It can allow all allies within 30 ft. to reroll a single die roll.
3. Or it can affect die rolls for variable effects (such as for spells like resurrection or prismatic spray). Read the table in reverse.

The material component is a pair of dice.

There have been suggestions in other threads that Bards should get options depending on the kinds of performers they are i.e., Bards who are trained a certain way would get certain abilities.

I think that the rogue talent mechanic would be the best way to articulate this.

BARD TALENTS:

  • pied piper gain an animal companion as a ranger of the same level
  • dancer gain evasion on a perform(dance) check
  • stage combat use a perform(acting) to imitate a combat feat of one of the members of your party
  • story teller gain one bonus divination spell of a level you can cast from any spell list.
  • hymnist gain the ability to channel energy 1/per day for a number of points equal to your perform check.
  • scoundrel gain find traps as a bonus 1st-level spell
  • musician gain one bonus evocation(sonic) spell of a level you can cast from any list.
  • magician gain one bonus illusion spell of a level you can cast from any list.
  • vocalist gain one bonus echantment spell of a level you can cast from any list.
  • pantomime with a successful non-vocal perform check, you can cast a spell with the silent spell feat.
  • conductor with a successful perform(any instrument) check, you can allow one or more allies to do 1d6 sonic damage on your next melee or ranged attack.
  • fool gain use a perform(comedy) check to gain a luck bonus of half you level to your next saving throw.
  • motivator use a perform(oratory) check to give a competence bonus of half you level to an ally's skill check.
  • virtuoso gain one bonus bardic performance feat
  • know-it-all gain one extra use of the loremaster ability per day

Obviously talents requiring a perform check will need a fairly high DC.

While rogues get ten talents over all, Bards might be limited to 5. I'm thinking one every four levels. This way, Bards have the opportunity to truly be the jack of all trades. It will also allow for tonnes of customization with no loss of flavour. It also keeps the perform skill from being pointless.

  • Rather than new menchanics or drastic changes, I think the Bard class would benefit from more options and abilities:

    New feats:

    Fast Performance:
Prerequisite: Bardic Performance ability, Perform 5 ranks, Dexterity 12 or more
Benefit: You can start a Bardic music effect as a move action
Normal: Starting a Bardic performance effect is a standard action

    Counterpoint
Prerequisite: Bardic Performance ability, Perform 10 ranks, Fast Performance
Benefit: You can combine two Bardic performance effects in one Bardic Performance.

    Swift Performance:
Prerequisite: Bardic Performance ability, Perform 15 ranks, Fast Performance
Benefit: : You can start a Bardic music effect as a swift action. Addtionally, any performances that require 1 minute of continuous plaing require 1 standard action instead.
Normal: Starting a Bardic performance effect is a standard action

    Project:
    Prerequisite: Bardic Peromance ability
Benefit: Increase the range of your Bardic Performances by half.

New Bardic Performances for the dead levels:

Captivate: A bard of 16th level or higher with 16 or more ranks in perform can captivate a target with an effect equivalent to the spell dominate person. At 20th level, this ability functions as dominate monster instead. The dc for this ability is 10 + ½bard’s level + charisma midifier.

stabilizing Performance: A bard pf 4th level or higher with 4ranks in perform can sustain her allies negating the need for stabilization checks during her performance. A sustaining song lasts for 5 minutes or until the virtuoso stops performing, whichever comes first

Restorative Performance: A bard of 7th level or higher with 7 ranks in perform can use this ability to remove fatigue and cure ability damage as per the spell lesser restoration.

Song of Fatigue: A bard of 10th level or higher with 10 ranks of perfrom can use this ability to render enemies fatigued.

Song of Exhaustion: A bard of 13th level or higher with 13th ranks of perfrom can use this ability to render enemies exhausted.

In addition, a brand new use for the perform skill. I though that high perform modifiers should function like spell focus but for bardic performance:

Bards who improve their performance ability not only gain access to new class abilites, but also improve the abilities they already have:

    Perform DC, result
15 increase fascinate DC by 1
20 increase suggestion DC by 1
25 increasediscordant performance DC by 1
30 increase frightening tune or paralysing show DC by 1
