Female Human (Taldan) Rogue (Survivalist)
Salvia's cold weather outfit grants a +5... This outfit grants a +5 circumstance bonus on Fortitude saving throws against exposure to cold weather. Fortitude: 1d20 + 2 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 5 = 12
Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Salvia thinks, Has any one of us NOT been touched by evil witches? but says nothing out loud. She tries to resist the sympathy she feels for Ryska and her sister. Living in fear of an evil that might or might not be coming for you ... this is a torment that Salvia knows all too well. She's realizes--now--that Ryska is not evil, witch though she is. Changing a deeply-held opinion, especially one based on fear, is always a challenge, a painful challenge. Salvia shrugs off the emotional confusion threatening to overwhelm her by focusing on the fire. The thought of eating the monster repels her at first, but as the aroma of roast reptile and Grandma's spices drifts over the area, she changes her mind. "That smell great, Grandma. I'll fill my cooking pot with snow and get some water boiling. It's easier to stay warm when you're sipping something hot."
Female Human (Taldan) Rogue (Survivalist)
"Thanks, Grandma. Here, take my old dagger...ain't special, but it's sharp. Everyone should have a dagger. As Salvia dons her new chain shirt, she says, "Ulfgard, would you mind carrying my old chain shirt til we get back to town? We should be able to get 50g or so for it, but I don't have any more room in my backpack.

"Thanks, Grandma. I'd love one." Salvia looks around while nibbling on a cookie, but sees nothing she needs or wants. "I'm going to need something besides a cooking pot to swing, if these are the kind of creatures we're up against. But I don't want to go back to town just yet. Let's follow the trail while it's fresh. Perception = 14 + 4 = 18

Damn! What are these monsters made of? Salvia drops her shortsword, reaches into her pack and swings a cooking pot down on the creature's head. ATTACK = 1d20 - 4 (improvised weapon penalty) = 16 - 4 = 12 I've never used an improved weapon before. The pot is 4 lbs and made of iron. If I hit him (which I don't think I did), what dice would I roll for damage?
Female Human (Taldan) Rogue (Survivalist)
The idea of clocking these unnatural creatures with her cooking pot crosses Salvia's mind, but she decides to use her short sword instead. She steps toward the downed halfling and takes a swing...

I'm assuming right now that Salvia is unaware of the noises and the boxes under the seat, given her low Perception roll. If she knew, she's probably be right there, checking it out. Does Ulfgard let her know he hears something, or would he keep it to himself?...either way is okay, but just thought I'd explain why my character's doing so little.

Salvia catches up with Ulfgard at the store. I brought rope, Ulfgard, if that helps. I also have fishing gear, pitons, a hammer, a pot for cooking, and a few other things. As for cash, all I can spare is 1 gold, but will gladly part with it to help with the cost of the tent and braziers.

Ryksa's words shock Salvia. Does this witch, this outsider, really care about us? This tormentor? This sender of nightmares? . . . But the emotions she sees cascading across Ryksa's face are undeniable, and Salvia shudders as she considered the possibility that the witch she's been frightened of for months might not be an enemy after all. Of course I'll help, Councilor. I just need to run to my brother's house, change clothes, grab gear. She tosses off her apron. I'll be back in half an hour. At her brother's house, Salvia sneaks upstairs to her room, packs, then leaves without saying a word to anyone.
Female Human (Taldan) Rogue (Survivalist)
Salvia sets a small tea pot, mug, spoon, and tiny dish of rock sugar down in front of Grandma Mable, slips the tray under one arm, then leans over to whisper into the old woman's ear, Sorry, we've no honey, Grandma. Bees are sleepin' these days. Into the uproar that follows Bern Stergon's accusation, Salvia adds her own two coppers: There's nothing wrong with livin' in the woods, Bern! I done it myself! I'd trust Ragnarok before I'd trust you, you stinking old goat! As soon as the words are out, she regrets them. Why am I shouting at that idiot when there's real danger nearby? Her eyes sweep the room, and she moves to a spot near the bar where she can keep both Ryksa and Tessaraea in sight.

GM DSP wrote: @ Salvia: In the campaign tab, you'll find a list of the notable NPCs. You can also make up up to 3 family names if you want. Salvia's "Families" -- Bert and Bethani Everglen – farmers – first adoptive family (her brother, Dalen, took their last name, Everglen, as his own) – She left due to conflicts with Bethani. Johnak and Elseleen Imirras – farmers, neighbors of the Everglen's and also related to Sophia Imirras – second adoptive family – Asked Salvia to leave after catching her stealing/hording/hiding food dozens of times. They thought that the threat of being turned out into the cold would stop her from stealing, but all it did was make her steal more before she ran away. Hank and Wanda Treefell – woodcutters – third adoptive family – Asked to leave after being caught stealing coins and breaking some of the Treefell's children's toys. Janika Wonderkin – a halfling teacher and amateur folklorist who took Salvia in for a while – Janika and Salvia had a love-hate, mentor-mentee relationship that culminated in a loud shouting match (something about witches) in the streets. It might have turned violent, but Dalen physically restrained his sister and dragged her away. Natharan and Zaarida Safander – cleric and his wife – fifth family – Although she was caught being unkind and covetous (taking money) on many occasions, the Safanders never threw Salvia out. She stayed for several years, enduring their “instruction,” but eventually left on her own. She did, however, come away from this family with a respect for both Erasil and Sarenrae. Brag Ironfoot also tried to take the girl in, but that lasted for less than a three days. Salvia now lives with Dalen and Lena Everglen and their newborn son. She loves them, but can't wait to leave.

Salvia's evening shift at The Silver Stoat began with the usual suspects, the usual jokes, the usual coppers. She's learned, over the past year, that tips were better if she kept her thoughts and opinions to herself. Tonight she was determined to earn at least 5 silver in tips, and so was focused solely on the work, speaking as little as possible. When one or another of the regular tried to draw her in with a compliment, a joke, or a pinch, she simply twisted out of reach and tossed a knowing smile over her shoulder. Many of the more inebriated guests mistook this maneuver for actual conversation. Suddenly, that lemming woman's voice cut through the din, causing the hairs on the back of Salvia's neck to stand on end. She fumbled, splashing ale on the floor, but caught the mug in mid-fall. Fortunately, no one seemed to notice. Returning to the bar to refill the mug, Salvia took her time, eavesdropping on Ryksa and Ragnarok. Sometimes she worried about Ragnarok and his unfortunate association with Old Mother and, now, this newcomer Ryksa.

GM DSP wrote: @ Salvia: Let me know which families or people you've lived with and now don't. :( [Actually jumped out of my chair in excitement when I saw my character's name on the list... Thanks!] Do you want me to create the names of the families Salvia stayed with or pick from a list of families you have for the area? I'm imagining that her path went something like this... ran away from the first farm family (where her brother stayed and was adopted), was then taken in by a second farm family (the neighbors, who thought she just needed some "discipline"), then taken in by the family of a wood cutter (who kept seeing her in the woods and took her home to his wife and kids, made her go to school), then by an educator/mentor (who thought to reform her and educate her), then by someone in the field of law enforcement (who thought to instill her with a sense of duty), then on her own in the woods for a while before being asked to come live with her now-grown and married brother.

I don't see my character, Salvia Hardheart on the list. Did I miss something?
Submitting Salvia Hardheart, human rogue. (Apologies for not knowing the ins and out of posting here on Paizo. Thanks for reading!) Salvia Hardheart / Human (Taldan) Rogue (Survivalist)/
Ten winters ago, eight-year-old Salvia and her twelve-year-old brother, Dalen, were found burrowed into the side of a hill. The children were starving and freezing to death. Fortunately, a kind and generous farmer found them. Dalen quickly adapted to life on the farm, endearing himself to the farmer and his wife. Slavia, however, was tormented by nightmares and unwilling to submit to the household’s rules and routines. She soon became a chronic run-away. Only Dalen could ever find her, usually in the woods, in a make-shift shelter. The local community of Haldren intervened from time to time, doing their best to keep the girl from harm. But Salvia was not easy. She picked fights with peers and stole food, coins and unattended trinkets. As a result, by the time she had reached her 15th birthday, she had worn out her welcome with five different Heldren families. Dalen took the last name of his adoptive family, but Salvia proudly adopted a back-handed nickname given to her by the townsfolk: Salvia Hardheart. Through the years, Salvia’s nightmares grew worse. In them, she relives her parents’ and another sibliing’s (a girl’s) deaths again and again, at the hands of a winter witch. Frogs fall from the sky, black tentacles grab her mother, and her father’s face erupts in festering blisters. Then the temperature drops. After both her parents are entombed in ice, the witch turns on the children. Though Salvia runs and runs, she can not escape the evil witch. Rays of freezing air and ice slice through her eyeballs, her nostrils, her mouth. As she begins to freeze from the inside out, the witch's cackle rises to ear-splitting decibels, and Salvia wakes up screaming. For hours afterward, Salvia is convinced that the witch is nearby, ready to attack again without warning. Dalen, although desperate to help his sister, insists that the events of her nightmares never happened. There never was another sibling named Frayla, two years older than Salvia. In Dalen’s memory, their father –an adventurer—simply left home one day and never came back. Their mother struggled for a while, but eventually could not pay rent, and the family ended up on the streets of Cassomir, penniless. Unfortunately, Their mother simply starved to death, because she gave every morsel of food to her children. When Dalen turned 20, he married his long-time girlfriend, Lena, the oldest daughter of a local woodcutter. The couple purchased a small farmstead and invited Salvia to live with them. So, for the last few years, Salvia has been living in a house, in relative peace, with her brother and sister-in-law. A year ago, shortly after Lena gave birth to their first child, Salvia landed a job at the local tavern. She's doing well there, and hasn't pissed off any customers yet. Salvia is saving money, buying things and sticking them in a backpack. She's also been taking swordplay lessons from the son of a blacksmith. Her stated plan is to assemble adventuring gear and leave Haldren to make her way in the world as a security guard for one of the halfling caravans that comes through town from time to time. She tells everyone that she wants to travel, see the world. Secretly, she has no interest in caravans or travel. Her plan is to trek north to hunt down her parents’ murderer before the witch comes back to kill her, or worse…goes after those she loves most: Dalen, Lena and precious little Dalen Jr. |
