Octavonius joins the group, panting and clutching his knees. "Apologies for my tardiness," he croaks between gasps of air. "It appears I forgot who and where I was for a time. Old age comes for us all, I suppose. Ohd and I are returned and ready to assist with these wayward guards." With that he casts a quick Mage Armor and awaits behind Guillaume to see how his attacks on the lock play out.
Octavonius attempts to line up a shot with the nearest rioter with his crossbow.
He then reloads.
"It is as though they crave their own destruction," Octavonius murmurs to himself before swiftly casting Mage Armor on himself and pulling out his crossbow. He then calls out to his familiar: "Ohd! Keep an eye on our surroundings, inform us of any new developments as they occur!"
Octavonius stands amongst the crowd surveying for any coordinated efforts to interrupt the execution while Ohd perches somewhere with a vantage point to look over the proceedings with a more "bird's eye view".
Octavonius and Ohd will join Fellzir in keeping an eye on the crowd to make sure there are no disruptions.
Octavonius strokes his chin thoughtfully. "If we allow a trial by combat we risk others in this rebellion using it as an opportunity to strike while we are distracted. Executing one of the children of our dear Sword Knight might break her spirit, or it might give her less of a reason to play nice. As long as her children live, she has a weakness we can exploit. If an execution must be held I suggest the beast that attacked us. It is a dangerous creature to keep alive and only seems to inspire further acts of rebellion."
Octavonius would probably lean more towards the whole any means part simply because it's what he experienced while in prison and was conditioned to see it as nothing but a good thing. But I think he's intelligent enough to know that such methods won't work on everyone. I think he would ultimately vote carrot but happily goes along with Amala to extract information in more messy ways should carrot fail
"I worry her final words imply she and her allies no longer respect the authority of our dear Baron. My familiar could also attempt to keep tabs on her, if we so wish it." "Ohd follow! Ohd follow!" the raven crows from Octavonius' shoulder.
"Ohd and myself will be happy to hold on to the Sword Knight's belongings in the meantime," Octavonius says with a smile that attempts, and most likely fails, to put Allamar at ease.
Octavonius' face wrinkled in a bit of amusement when his chatty companion rattled off the legal jargon, his mind taking him back to many years ago when many of those same words were flung at him before spending half a life behind bars. It was somewhat...nostalgic. The old wizard's face wrinkles again when the Sword Knight enters, though his countenance is much less amused. For now he lets the others speak, but dosent hide an incantation of Detect Magic aimed at the woman, curious if she brought any magical means for this confrontation. "Consequences! Consequences!" Ohd crows from his shoulder.
"Is the plan to lock away these brothers alongside the beast?" Octavonius asks his comrades in a hushed voice. "My vote would be at least temporarily to exact information from them, but I worry about the long term sustainability of it all. If they are working with angel types I doubt this will be the last time we see an attempt like this."
"Your lessers have surrendered, kuribu!" Octavonius calls to the angelic creature. "If you genuinely care for their lives you would do well to do the same." He reloads and readies to shoot the crossbow at the kuribu if it continues to attack.
"Damnation!" Octavonius curses again upon seeing his spell having little effect. Pulling out his crossbow, he takes aim and fires upon the brother Aurelius is attacking.
Octavonius moves until the closest brother is within 30 feet of him and casts Ray of Enfeeblement on said brother to try and hinder his attacks further.
Octavonius quickly divulges what he has learned about the angelic creature. His eyes go momentarily wide with a bit of wild excitement. "All the tortures and teachings were for you, sweet Asmodeus. I bleed and chant for you, dear Asmodeus." With a flourish of chants and gestures, Octavonius casts Mage Armor upon himself before pulling out his crossbow seemingly eager for the fight ahead.
"Damnation!" Octavonius curses hearing the noises on the other side of the fog wall. He double moves in an attempt to join Amala and Hallidan on the other side. As soon as he spots the small winged creature his eyes go wide. "What in the nine bloody hells is happening?"
Octavonius continues to hold his spell, ready to fire it as soon as anyone in the fog makes to run at them or away. Perhaps if he can move to see behind the fog as well he will do so but continues to ready the spell either way.
"You've been discovered!" Octavonius calls out to the mist. "Reveal yourselves or face more severe consequences than merely intruding where you do not belong!" He makes no attempt at diplomacy with his words, simply stating a fact. He begins chanting and readies a Ray of Enfeeblement if something comes out of the mist intending their group harm or attempting to flee.
Octavonius listened to the punishment from a distance and took the news in stride when Ohd reported it to him later. Having been a man broken by such punishments himself he dosent think too much about it being applied to others. Days later, while accompanying the others leaving the jail the vapor is brought to his attention and he studies it from afar warily. "More fey interference?" he wonders aloud.
Not one for confrontation, Octavonius will remain posted by the jail but will keep eyes on the shop to head over if it looks like his allies end up needing his help. He will send Ohd with them to report back if he fails to spot anything himself.
Just a heads up but had to change a few things on my sheet when I went back into my herolab sheet (double checking that I did have Prestidigitation available for future prep) and realized I hadn't transferred everything correctly when we leveled up way back when.
Octavonius crinkles his nose as he looks over the defilement. "It does appear that we are making few fans here," At Hallidan's question he sadly shakes his head. "While I possess the magic in my book I'm afraid I did not have the foresight to prepare it today." He and Ohd attempt to join in the search.
"Most magic is temporary. Give it some time and I am sure you will see your luck turn around again," Octavonius says to Hallidan, unable to be much practical help in fey matters. "If there are fey lurking about it may be prudent to ensure our own quarters do not provide them as easy of an access."
"What in the devils has happened here?" Octavonius muses once they all reconvene. "First a were-beast and now a flighty fey creature. Is our town being encroached upon?"
"Sounds like a proper mad house up there," Octavonius mutters to himself as he continues to ready his spell.
With nearly everyone else making their way up Octavonius looks from the trap door to Fellzir. "There's little chance I can join them but these old bones may be able to assist you if you require it."
Hearing the demands of his fellows, Octavonius sets his sights on the trap door and readies an Acid Splash to strike this mystery creature should it come into view.
With no easy way for the old wizard to join the fray, Octavonius simply shouts words of encouragement up Hallidan and Amala. When Ohd joins him in the shouting, he remembers his familiar can do more than just squawk on his shoulder. "Get up there and see what it is and report back so that I can identify the blasted thing!" "Yes, Master!" the raven says.
"Something invisible must be preying upon us!" Octavonius warns. "Steel yourselves!" Seeing Fellzir's casting, he goes for a Detect Magic as well, trying to hit any areas that Fellzir's spell cannot.
Octavonius curses from the pain of being part of a human pyramid then in surprise as Hallidan is attacked. "I won't be able to do much from down here. Be careful, blast it!" Without many more options Octavonius simply casts Mage Armor upon himself.
This is quickly turning into a three stooges episode!
"Blast! These devils really want to make this difficult," Octavonius curses. After making sure Aurelius is alright from his fall he wanders over to the ladder to see the state of it and if it could be easily repaired.
Octavonius will continue readying to shoot as well.
"I have plenty of fire at my disposal, should we require it," Octavonius says to his comrades, though hopefully loud enough for whoever it is upstairs to hear. At the same time he also levels his crossbow at the top of the ladder, reading to fire at any hostile creature that descends.
"What a strange thing to find in place that should be long abandoned," Octavonius muses aloud as he scans the interior, pulling out his crossbow as he does. He nods at the ladder. "Shall we proceed upwards?" "Upwards and onwards!" Ohd says in a hushed squawk. "Silence!" his master hisses regardless.
Octavonius, with Ohd's assistance, does a cursory glance of the area to see if there is anything out of place aside from the open gate and missing guard. As he does so he says, "Perhaps the guards abandoned their post. If they are truly gone we will need to see about posting more reliable sorts to watch this gate."
Octavonius had been enjoying the few days of peace and quiet at the jailhouse, but quickly rouses to the call to action. Though the does listen to the lycanthropy concern with a nod. "If the beast remains tight-lipped about its origins and the lack of any others it might have run its use. However, if we risk keeping it alive and jailed and there are sympathizers it could provide a useful bait to weed out any if they attempt to free the creature. Although we will need a few others outside our little band we could trust to watch the beast when we are away." "Useful bait! Useful bait!" Ohd caws from his master's shoulder.
Octavonius listens to the back and forth for a moment before rubbing his eyes. "I'm afraid I've been too long removed from society to really understand much of this. Debt is a word I've heard but not yet had the luxury to encounter. Having a physician, if she is indeed a good one, in our pocket could be beneficial in the long run. A little gold spent in her favor now could save us much more in the future. If we find her services agreeable I am more than willing to offer up coin from my own purse to buy her allegiance to our cause."
"If it's all the same to the rest of you I shall remain here to rest these old bones and help Cimri keep an eye on this beast," Octavonius says, already lowering himself in a chair with a contended sigh.
"I appreciate your understanding," Octavonius says with a bow of his head. "If permitted I suggest we move this creature to a proper cell and myself and at least one other watch over it while the others fetch a proper witness."
"Should we put it to a vote?" Octavonius offers. "We know where Fellzir and I stand, as well as Amala and Cimri. Hallidan it seems you side with the ladies here. Aurelis if you feel the same as them then I suppose the matter is settled."
"There could be more fiends like him,"Octavonius muses."It may be worth learning from this creature if there are others like it hiding on our midst. Perhaps we should involve powers greater than ours in this matter?"
"Blast you! Blast you!"
Octavonius continues to pepper the beast with Acid Splashes while Ohd caws encouragement from the window.
Seeing his spell strike true, Octavonius attempts to send another Acid Splash Caggan's way!
"Death by a thousand burns!" the old man croaks.
Octavonius would be interested in further interrogations on how such a creature made a life for itself in town and if it has other such allies lurking about. But he wouldn't begrudge his allies their need for retribution.
"Blast you, stubborn brute!" Octavonius curses when he sees his spell have little effect. Feeling the magic burning into his forehead, he adjusts himself as necessary to avoid cover getting in the way and attempts to send an Acid Splash Caggan's way.
Octavonius continues to hold his spell, waiting for an opening. "Big tusks! Be careful!" Ohd shouts unhelpfully from a window in the prison.
Once Octavonius is outside he takes the briefest of moments to take in the strange scene. How had such a beast found itself so deeply entrenched in town? Shaking the thoughts aside, the old wizard stumbles to place himself within 30 feet of the creature without anything to block line of sight between them. "If we need it, I have a spell that can weaken this beast!" he calls to his companions as he begins the flourishes and words necessary to cast it. "It will be much easier for me to strike the creature with a clearer shot! Step away when and if you can and I will aid us!"
